Atlantic girls push through Kuemper Catholic for road win

Sports

January 10th, 2025 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team used stifling defense with strong scoring performances inside the paint to set the tone and push them to a 58-39 win over the Kuemper Catholic Knights on Friday in Carroll. The Trojans focused on feeding the ball to Katrina Williams near the basket and she delivered with 14 points in the first half.

Atlantic led by 15 at the end of the first quarter but held firm in the second, taking a 34-22 lead into half. The Trojans built the lead up to 22 by the end of the third and rolled to the win.

Katrina Williams led the way with 20 points and Paytn Harter added 19. Atlantic head coach Dan Vargason credited the way Williams and Harter played together.

Coach Vargason also noticed the focus his defense displayed throughout the evening.

The Trojans improved to 8-4 and will host Clarinda on Tuesday. Coach Vargason hopes to see even more intensity from his squad with their matchup against the Cardinals.

Kaylie Simons was the Knights leading scorer with 12 and Elsa Tiefenthaler chipped in 11. The Knights fall to 6-6 on the season and they will face East Sac County on Saturday.

Kuemper Catholic Boys Control Trojans in Carroll

Sports

January 10th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team fell 81-29 Friday night in Carroll to the Kuemper Catholic Knights. The knights showed why they are considered one of the best 2A teams in the state of Iowa. Their pace was quick, their ball movement precise, their defense was hard nosed and they rarely missed an opportunity to score.

The Knights came out hot from the start, especially from deep. Kuemper Catholic hit back to back threes to start the game as a part of their 4 long balls in the opening quarter. Their defense was just as hot allowing the Trojans little room to operate. Grant Petty picked up the Trojan’s first points of the game via charity stripe in the final minute of the frame. Kuemper Catholic ended the first quarter without allowing a field goal on their way to 26-1 lead.

The rest of the game followed suit. Atlantic’s offense struggled to connect managing 28 points in the next three quarters. Gavin McLaren led the scoring for Atlantic with 7 points. Grant Petty, Sawyer Tarrell, and Vincent Meisinger all knocked down threes while Petty and Tarrell finished with six and five points respectively. Kuemper Catholic’s Brock Badding led the contest with 15 points. The Knights moved to 9-1 with the victory while the Trojans fell to 2-8 with the loss.

Atlantic will be back at home Tuesday when the take on Clarinda.
