IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa punter Rhys Dakin was named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team on Tuesday.

Dakin is the fourth Hawkeye to earn FWAA Freshman All-America distinction over the last four years, joining offensive lineman Connor Colby and defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness in 2021 and punter Tory Taylor in 2020.

Dakin averaged 44.1 yards on 64 punts, which ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 24th nationally. Thirty-three of his punts were fair caught, 29 were downed inside the 20 and 16 traveled 50+ yards. Only five of his punts were touchbacks.

The native of Melbourne, Australia, was also honored second team all-conference by the media and third team by the Big Ten head coaches.

Iowa won eight games and tied for fifth place in the expanded Big Ten in 2024. The Hawkeyes competed in the Music City Bowl to conclude the season.

Second ranked Iowa State hosts ninth ranked Kansas in a key Big 12 clash on Wednesday night. The Cyclones are 4-0 in the Big 12 and have won their last 27 games in Hilton Coliseum. The Jayhawks are 3-1 in the league race with their only loss coming at home to West Virginia back on New Year’s Eve.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake’s Katie Dinnebier added to her lucrative 2024-25 campaign with another Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honor. The senior guard helped Drake improve to 11-5 overall and remain unbeaten in MVC play in a pair of road wins.

Dinnebier averaged 22.0 points, 9.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game while shooting 52% from the floor in a pair of wins for the Bulldogs. Dinnebier began the week with 26 points, eight steals, seven assists, and went 9-of-16 from the floor in a victory over Bradley. Her eight swipes marked a new career high as she enjoyed her sixth 20-plus point effort of the year. She fell two points shy of another 20-point outpouring against Illinois State, contributing 18 points to go with six rebounds and a dozen assists for her third double-double of the year. The West Des Moines native continues to climb the Bulldogs’ all-time scoring list, becoming the 16th player in program history to notch over 1,600 career points.

Dinnebier has now won five consecutive, and six total, MVC Player of the Week honors this season.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (KCRG) – A Texas man was arrested in Indianapolis and is facing charges for allegedly threatening former Hawkeye basketball star Caitlin Clark.  ABC reports 55-year-old Michael Lewis is charged with stalking after the Marion County (Indiana) Prosecutor’s Office said he sent “numerous threats and sexually explicit messages to Clark via his social media accounts.”

The messages were sent over X between Dec. 16, 2024 and Jan. 2, according to an affidavit from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

ABC reports investigators were able to trace the messages from the X account to an IP address at an Indianapolis hotel. The affidavit also says Clark does not know Lewis, nor has she responded to his messages, and that she has been fearful for her safety since receiving the messages.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Payton Sandfort has been named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office. It is the second weekly honor of Sandfort’s career.

Sandfort, who was also selected as Dick Vitale’s National Player of the Week, shared the Big Ten distinction with Michigan’s Vladislav Goldin.

The Waukee, Iowa, native was recognized after averaging 26.5 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists in leading the Hawkeyes to wins over Nebraska and Indiana. He shot 55.6 percent from the floor, 52.6 percent from 3-point range and went 13-of-14 from the free throw stripe.

Sandfort’s week started slow after he was held scoreless in the first half of the Jan. 7 game against Nebraska. The Hawkeyes trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before Sandfort exploded to score 30 points in the second half and overtime (27 in the second half alone), leading the Hawkeyes to a 97-87 win.

He finished the game 8-of-15 from the field, made 6-of-10 3-pointers and went 8-of-9 from the free throw stripe to match his career high. He also had six rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal in 35 minutes.

The second half production was the most by a Hawkeye since Luka Garza scored 27 of his 44 points in the first half at Michigan in 2019.

Against Indiana, it was déjà vu.

Sandfort scored two points in the first half before scoring 21 points in the second in an 85-60 blasting of the Hoosiers. He made 7-of-12 field goals, including four 3-pointers, to go along with six rebounds and three assists.

The performance was Sandfort’s team-leading sixth 20-point game of the season and it pushed his scoring average to a team-best 16.9 points on the year. Iowa’s 25-point win over Indiana was the largest in the series since 1996.

Sandfort was previously named the Big Ten Player of the Week on March 4, 2024.

Iowa (12-4, 3-2) returns to action Tuesday, facing USC at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. The game will begin at 9:40 p.m. (CT) and be televised on FS1.

UNI coach Ben Jacobson hopes Saturdays come from behind victory at Illinois State provides momentum for his team. The Panthers posted an 85-84 buzzer beating victory over the Redbirds and take a 4-2 Missouri Valley Conference record into Tuesday night’s game at home against Evansville.

The Panthers begin the week part of a four way tie for second in the Valley race and nine teams are sitting at .500 or better.

Jacobson says success in the Valley requires consistent effort.

Evansville is 3-3 in the Valley after a 63-40 loss at Drake.

The Iowa Hawkeye men will get their first taste of the new-look Big Ten Conference on Tuesday night with a visit to USC. It will be their first game against one of the former PAC-12 schools and the week concludes on Friday with a game against UCLA.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says the team may spend the entire week in the same hotel. Friday night’s game at UCLA may move to a different venue due to wildfires in Los Angeles.

Under first year coach Eric Musselman the Trojans are 2-3 in the league race and coming off a resounding win at nationally ranked Illinois.
