AHSTW Boys Looking to Continue Winning Ways

Sports

January 16th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The AHSTW Vikings boys basketball team is looking to continue their winning ways heading into the final month of the season. After starting the season 0-4, the Vikes have made a turnaround. AHSTW has won four of their last five games, all by at least 10 points. Head coach G.G Harris says along with health; the defense has fueled his team’s run.

Offensively, three Vikings are having great starts to the year. One of which is senior Camden Soukup. Soukup is currently third on the team in scoring averaging 11.3 points per game. He is also one of the team’s best free throw shooters making 69% of his shots from the charity stripe while ranking second on the squad in attempts. Harris stated his production up front has been invaluable.

You also cannot forget about junior Collin Harder. The junior ranks second on the team in scoring putting up 12.2 points a night while also leading the team in assists. Harris thinks Harder is playing some of his best basketball as the team’s main distributor.

However, leading the way both on the floor and in the room is Luke Sternberg. Sternberg sits atop the Vikings in scoring averaging 18.8 points per game. In addition to scoring, he also leads the team in steals and rebounds. When mentioning Sternberg, Harris has been impressed with his competitiveness and leadership but says his basketball IQ and athletic ability have created problems for opposing defenses.

Although seems to be on the verge of breaking out, Harris still wants to see more consistency heading into the final stretch.

Coming up for the Vikings is a road contest with 8-3 Underwood. Harris is expecting a tough challenge and knows his team will have to defend well.

AHSTW contest at Underwood is scheduled for Friday at 7:30 pm.

Curtis Jones scored 25 points and Iowa State put the game away with a late 16-2 run as the second ranked Cyclones beat ninth ranked Kansas 74-57. Jones finished five-of-six from three point range as ISU moves to 5-0 in the Big 12.

That’s Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger who says defense and rebounding were the keys. The Cyclones outrebounded the Jayhawks 43-33.

The Cyclones played without sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic who is out with a non-shooting hand injury.

Kansas shot only 40 percent for the game and coach Bill Self praised Iowa State’s effort.

Drake women host Belmont Thursday night

Sports

January 15th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The Drake women look to maintain sole possession of the Missouri Valley lead at home on Thursday night against Belmont. The Bulldogs are 5-0 in the Valley and coach Allison Pohlman likes the progress her team is making. Belmont is 4-1 and part of a three way tie for second in the Valley.

A key for Drake has been the play of senior guard Katie Dinnebier. The reigning Valley player of the year leads the conference in scoring, assists and steals.

Iowa defense absent in loss at USC

Sports

January 15th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s porous defense was too much to overcome on the road again. USC shot a blistering 65 percent and beat the Hawkeyes 99-89. Iowa shot better than 53 percent in a game it never led.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes were outrebounded 37 to 20 in falling to 3-3 in the Big Ten.

Owen Freeman led Iowa with a career-high 23 points. The Hawkeyes play UCLA Friday night.
