Hartr Breaks Record in Trojan Loss to Harlan

Sports

January 18th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans Girls basketball team’s four-game winning streak ended Friday night at the hands of the Harlan Cyclones. In a defensive affair, both teams struggled on offense and with turnovers. However, in a game that came down to limiting mistakes and taking advantage of opportunities, the Cyclones edged Atlantic in both aspects as they walked away with a 44-32 win. However, the biggest positive for the Trojans had nothing to do with the final score. Friday night marked a massive milestone as Patyn Hartr became the all-time leading scorer in Atlantic girls basketball history.

As expected in a rivalry game, it was clear from the start that this contest would be a battle. Mackenna Schroeder and Aubrey Schwieso traded threes early for the game’s first points. However, with the game tied at five, the Cyclones went on an 11-3 run to close out the first quarter, a lead they would never relinquish. The Trojans offense struggled the rest of the half. Schroeder’s opening bucket was Atlantic’s lone long ball of the half. Harlan held the Trojans to just two points in the second quarter. Although the Atlantic defense was just as stingy, the Cyclones did just enough to open up a 21-10 lead at the half.

Atlantic’s offense improved in the second half, but so did Harlan’s. The Trojans knocked down five three-pointers in the final two frames. Hatr hit two to lead the Trojans with 14 points. Atlantic did battle back to bring the score as close as six, but they were unable to get over the hump. The Cyclones had three players reach double-digit scoring, led by Schwieso, who finished with 16.

It was a bittersweet moment for the Trojans as Hartr’s milestone was cause for celebration. Throughout her career, Hartr has compiled 1.261 points. This broke the previous record of 1,259 set by Hayley Rasmussen. In addition to the scoring record, she also holds the program record for most rebounds and ranks in the top five in assists, steals, and blocked shots. Hartr said it felt great to be Atlatnic’s all-time leading scorer and that her work ethic and willingness to improve helped get her there

Head coach Dan Vargason was very proud of what Hartr has been able to accomplish during her time with the program.

Despite the loss, Vargason was pleased with the way his team defended but knew his team struggled on offense.

The 9-5 Trojans will be back at home Tuesday when they take on Red Oak.

Atlantic basketball falls in Harlan

Sports

January 17th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans basketball team kept it close in the first, but ultimately fell to the Harlan Cyclones on Friday night 71-52. The Trojans kept it competitive in the first eight minutes with three triples in the first from Kinnick Juhl. The quarter seeing multiple lead changes and ties as the Trojans would end the first being down 20-16. In the second quarter Atlantic seemed to slowly lose their grip on Dallas McDowell and Kobe Klaassen as both combined for six baskets in the second which helped create multiple 6-0 runs to push the Cyclones ahead by 12 at the end of the half.

Things took of for Harlan in the third quarter as baskets continued to fall for Klaassen and the Trojans found themselves in found trouble midway through the quarter. The Cyclones would ride their hot hand into the fourth and kept the Trojans away from the paint for a final score of 71-52.

Atlantic was led in scoring by Juhl with 14 and Gavin McLaren had 13. Trojan Head Coach Dalton Franken gave credit to the way his team handled adversity in the first quarter, but was disappointed in the transition defense.

Coach Franken did note that his team is improving with their ball handling and scoring.

The Trojans drop to 2-10 on the year with the loss and their next matchup is on Tuesday against the Red Oak Tigers. Coach Franken plans on keeping his team focused for their contest on Tuesday.

The Cyclones leading score was with McDowell with 26 and Klaasen with 21.

The second ranked Iowa State men take a 5-0 Big 12 record on the road to West Virginia tomorrow. Under former Drake coach Darian DeVries the Mountaineers are 3-2 in the Big 12 and 12-4 overall.

That’s Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger who hopes sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic will be able to avoid surgery. He is out several weeks with an injury to his non-shooting hand.

Otzelberger says the loss of Momcilovic has an impact on the offensive end.

Tip-off from Morgantown, WVA is at 4-p.m. Central Time.

Exira-EHK Boys Fall to Ar-We-Va

Sports

January 17th, 2025 by Christian Adams

Despite an excellent start, the Exira-EHK Spartans boys’ basketball team fell to the Ar-We-Va Rockets 69-56 on Thursday night. Despite the score being tied at the half, the Rockets took control of the game in the third quarter and never looked back. Although Exira-EHK’s effort never faltered, it was too much to overcome.

Looking to end a skid, the Spartans came out of the gate with something to prove. Josh Nelson was all over the floor. He scored the first five points of the game, rebounded well, and played tough defense. Nelson and the rest of the Spartans shot lights out from beyond the arc in the first half. Exira-EHK hit seven three-points in the first two quarters. Nelson knocked down three while Austin Rasmussen grabbed two. However, Ar-We-Va’s Blayne Smith kept the Rockets in the game knocking down five threes of his own. After a back-and-forth affair in the closing minutes, the teams entered the half deadlocked at 29.

From the opening play of the second half, it was clear the Rockets’ intensity had changed. Not only did Ar-We-Va’s play improve, but Exira-EHK’s shots stopped falling. The Spartans went through a four-minute scoring drought early in the third, allowing the Rockets to build a 10-point lead by the end of the quarter. Although the Spartans battled back to bring the score as close as nine, it would not be enough as Ar-We-Va pulled away to pick up their ninth win of the season. Smith led the game in scoring with 26 points, while Nelson and Rasmussen weren’t far behind, finishing with 24 and 19 points respectively. Despite the loss, head coach Tony Santistaben liked his team’s effort in the first half.

In his eyes, the difference in the game was the halftime adjustments Ar-We-Va made along with their ability to force takeaways.

It is a quick turnaround for the Spartans as they face Boyer Valley at home Friday. Santistaben knows his team will continue to put forth a solid effort.

Tipoff for the game against Boyer Valley is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
