Iowa trimmed a 13-point Minnesota lead to three but that is close as they would get in a 72-67 loss to the Gophers. The 67 points was a season low.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes finished three-of-21 from three point range in dropping their third straight game to fall to 3-5 in the Big Ten. It was Minnesota’s first win in Iowa City since 2015.

The Iowa State women hope to take advantage of their home court this week beginning Wednesday night by hosting BYU. The Cyclones are 4-3 in the Big 12 and will close the week by hosting Central Florida this weekend.

The Cyclones are tied for sixth in the Big 12 as they approach the midway point of the league race.

Fennelly hopes point guard Emily Ryan returns to the lineup against BYU. She missed Sunday’s loss at West Virginia with an illness.

ACGC Boys Win a Come From Behind Thriller in Anita

Sports

January 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

The ACGC boys basketball team won a come-from-behind thriller 71-69 in overtime over the CAM Cougars. Although most of the game was closely contested, the Cougars were able to build and maintain a lead in the first half. Although the Chargers shrunk the lead in the third quarter, CAM grabbed the momentum back, building a 12 point lead over halfway through the final quarter. However, where CAM’s best players shined in the first half, Jathan South took over the game scoring 21 of his 23 points in the second half to lift ACGC to the comeback win.

Although the game was tied heading into the second quarter, the first half belonged to CAM. Their best players made dynamic plays. Collin Bower was everywhere. He rebounded well and made some incredible plays in the paint, including getting over the rim for a putback on a missed shot. Bower knocked down four field goals on his way to 10 first-half points. Chase Jahde was just good for the Cougars. He was a beast in the paint, knocking down five field goals (including an improbable and impressive hook shot) to pick up 13 first-half points. Coby Venteicher also chipped in to help CAM take a 36-27 lead into the locker room.

By no means did ACGC play poorly, the Cougars were just better. However, the Chargers did come out and appear to play better in the third quarter. Although they didn’t make much headway, they still cut the deficit to six heading into the final frame. This momentum did not last long, as the Cougars grabbed momentum back early in the fourth. With four minutes to go in regulation, CAM had opened up a 12 point lead and seemed destined for an upset. However, seemingly out of nowhere, the Chargers started to claw their way back. Jathan South hit three fourth quarter threes to give ACGC a chance. Despite losing the momentum, CAM still had multiple chances to put the game out of reach but struggled with free throws. This opened the door for Noah Kading to hit a game-tying buzzer-beater to send the game to overtime.

Since both teams were in the double bonus heading into overtime, neither side had fouls to give. Therefore, overtime was more of a free-throw contest. Whoever could earn more trips and make more from the line would determine the game. It was ACGC that would ultimately come out on top. South tacked on to his game-leading 23 points, downing all of his free throws while completing a three-point play. Jahde led the way for CAM with 22 points but was held scoreless in overtime. Although they weren’t at their best, the Chargers found a way to win when it mattered. Head coach Lance Kading says he believes his team’s ability to battle back proves the Chargers have what it takes.

In addition to his team’s resiliency, Kading was pleased with the way his top players made a change in the second half.

Up next for ACGC is another road test at Ogden Tuesday and Kading knows it will be a challenge.

The win moves the Chargers to 10-1 on the year while the Cougars fall to 4-8. CAM will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Woodbine.

ACGC Girls Take Road Win Over CAM

Sports

January 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

The ACGC Chargers girls basketball team played a near complete game as they defeated the CAM Cougars 53-23 Monday night. The offense was efficient, took advantage of their opportunities, and rebounded well. The Charger defense was even better. ACGC forced turnovers and limited the Cougars to single digits in all four quarters. Three Chargers also finished with double-digit points as ACGC walked away with a win to move to 11-1.

Neither offense was red hot out of the gate. Maddie Richter hit the Cougars’ lone three-pointer to give CAM an early lead. However, the Chargers would respond with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. Shay Lemke hit two threes, while Camdyn Richter added five points to give ACGC a 13-point lead at the end of the opening quarter. The opening half was also marked by the Chargers’ stifling defense. CAM struggled to break through as ACGC forced numerous turnovers that turned into transition points. Karli Kautzky led the first half scoring for ACGC with 11 as the Chargers took a 33-12 lead to the break.

Little changed in the second half. The Charger defense continued to pose problems for CAM. Meanwhile, the ACGC offensive was able to build on the lead. Camdyn Richter knocked down two second-half threes to lead the game in scoring with 18 points. Maddie Richter finished with 10 leading CAM’s offense. Head coach Brad Baudler was proud of how his team defended, especially when it came to limiting the production of Maddie Richter.

In addition to Camdyn Richter and Kautzky, Lemke also finished with double-digit points. Baudler said he liked how all of them contributed in their own ways.

Up next for the Chargers is another road contest against Ogden on Tuesday. Although there are some things to clean up, Baudler wants to see much of the same.

ACGC’s contest against Ogden is scheduled for 6 pm, while CAM will Travel to Woodbine on Tuesday night.

Iowa’s Fran McCaffery previews Minnesota

Sports

January 20th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery is looking for answers on defense as the Hawkeyes get ready to host Minnesota on Tuesday night. The Hawkeyes were blown out twice in Los Angeles last week and gave up 94 points in a loss to UCLA and 99 in a loss to USC.

Iowa has struggled with ball screen defense, especially on the road.

McCaffewry is not concerned about a lack of confidence. The Hawkeyes are 3-4 in the Big Ten after the trip west.

The Gophers are 1-6 in the Big Ten but they are coming off a 64-61 win at the buzzer over 21st ranked Michigan.

McCaffery on the concerns the Gophers cause.

McCaffery is not sure senior forward Payton Sandfort will play Tuesday night. He injured a shoulder early in the loss at UCLA and did not return.
