Graves Voted Academic All-America

Sports

January 28th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Aaron Graves has been named to the Academic All-America second team. The announcement was made on Tuesday by College Sports Communicators, formerly the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Graves, who boasts a perfect 4.00 grade point average, is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten and Dean’s List honoree. The exercise science major also earned Academic All-District recognition and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2023.

Graves (6-foot-4, 300 pounds) earned honorable mention all-conference accolades after starting all 13 games at left defensive tackle in 2024. He totaled 33 tackles (17 solo, 16 assists), including eight tackles for a loss (six sacks), three forced fumbles, three pass break-ups, and two quarterback pressures. The native of Dayton, Iowa was tabbed Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week after registering five tackles, including two sacks, forced a career-high two fumbles, and broke-up a pass in Iowa’s 40-16 victory over Washington on Oct. 12, 2024.

He ranked fourth on the squad in tackles (65), tied for third with four pass break-ups, to go along with an interception (39-yard return versus Rutgers). After the season, Schulte was named an honorable mention all-conference selection and was a Brett Greenwood Award recipient.

In 26 seasons under Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, 12 Iowa football student-athletes have combined on 16 occasions to earn Academic All-America recognition.

Drake and Northern Iowa men collide Wednesday night in Des Moines

Sports

January 28th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Two of the contenders in the Missouri Valley Conference collide in Des Moines on Wednesday night when Drake hosts UNI. The Bulldogs are second in the Valley at 8-2. The Panthers are a game back at 7-3. These two programs have combined to win seven Valley regular season and tournament titles during the past decade and Drake coach Ben McCollum says that has elevated the rivalry.

The Bulldogs enter the game riding a six game win streak and McCollum says the Panthers will be a big hurdle.

McCollum has used his bench more in recent weeks and feels the added depth has paid off.

Drake junior point guard Bennett Stirtz leads the Valley in scoring, assists and steals and McCollum says his calm demeanor has been a plus in a number of close games.

UNI coach Ben Jacobson says defense has been a big part of Drake’s success.

The Bulldogs are the Valley’s best defensive team as well as rebounding.

Jacobson says Bennet Stirtz sets the table for the Bulldogs.

Jacobson says the Bulldogs put a lot of pressure on teams at the defensive end.

Drake has won seven of the last nine in the series and the teams traded home court victories last season.

Hawkeye Men’s Wrestling Down No. 4 Ohio State

Sports

January 27th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated fourth-ranked Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Mediacom Mat.

The Hawkeyes won 7-of-10 bouts and got bonus points at 165 and 197 pounds.

“You have to go out and do it, that is where we are at,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We get on a plane Thursday, and we go 7 p.m. Eastern Time at the Bryce Jordan Center”.

The Hawkeyes got a win out of the gate as Joey Cruz earned the highest ranked win of his career defeating No. 16 Brendan McCrone, 6-5.

Back-to-back technical falls for the Buckeyes put them up, 10-3, as Ben Davino won 19-4 over Keyan Hernandez and top-ranked Jesse Mendez won 19-2 over Ryder Block.

A top 10 win at 149, as Kyle Parco defeated No. 9 Dylan D’Emilio, 8-3, got the Hawkeyes back in the win column.

At 157, top-ranked Jacori Teemer made his return from injury for the Hawkeyes winning via a 10-5 decision over 17th ranked Sammy Sasso, cutting the Ohio State lead to one.

Iowa got bonus points out of intermission as Michael Caliendo defeated No.9 Paddy Gallagher, 11-3, for the major decision at 165.

The Buckeyes responded tying the score at 13 apiece with a decision at 174, No. 6 Carson Kharchla defeated Patrick Kennedy, 7-3.

A 4-1 overtime win at 184 for Gabe Arnold over No. 19 Ryder Rogotzke gave the Hawkeyes the lead back and a 18-1 technical fall from Stephen Buchanan over No. 17 Seth Schumate put that match away for the Hawkeyes.

“Of course, I wish I would have finished all the attacks I had taken,” said Arnold. “My goal out there is to make the scoreboard lopsided, throw a football score on my side. Obviously that is what I want to do, but sometimes the plan changes a little bit, and you have to deviate. You keep attacking, and I was confident in my ability and my attacks. I just kept going.”

At heavyweight, Ben Kueter put an exclamation point on the dual winning a 5-4 decision over No. 6 Nick Feldman.
