Two teams looking to bounce back from shocking losses collide Monday night when third ranked Iowa State visits number 11 Kansas. The Cyclones had their 29-game home court win streak snapped with an 80-61 loss to Kansas State. The Cyclones dominated the Jayhawks 74-57 in the first meeting in mid-January.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger who says the Cyclones need to compete better on the glass and execute better in the half court. The Cyclones had 18 turnovers in the loss to K-State.

Iowa State had only four bench points and Saturday and Otzelberger says they will need more help Monday night.

The Cyclones did not play in Allen Fieldhouse last season. Cyclone junior guard Tamin Lipsey.

Lipsey says the loss on Saturday will provided added motivation

The Cyclones are 7-3 in the Big 12 and 17-4 overall. Kansas is 6-4 in the leasgue race after an 81-70 loss at Baylor. It was a game the Jayhawks led by 19 points at halftime.

Griswold Girls Kickoff Senior Night with Win Over Essex

Sports

February 1st, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Griswold Tigers girls basketball team kicked off the first game of a double-header against the Essex Trojans with a 53-26 victory. Defensively, the Tigers brought their A-game forcing numerous turnovers. Offensively, it was a team effort as nine Tigers found the scoresheet.  After getting out to an early lead, Griswold never trailed on the way to their sixth win of the season.

On a night dedicated to seniors, head coach Aaron Houser went with an all-senior starting lineup that did not disappoint. The Tigers started the game on a 5-0 run to take an early lead. Brenna Tye led the charge with two field goals in the opening quarter as all five senior starters chipped in. By the end of the first frame, Griswold had established a 10 point cushion. As Griswold continued to build their lead in the second quarter, it was the defense continued to shine. The Tigers allowed just two points in the first quarter and only four in the second. Throughout the game, Griswold’s high-pressure defense forced Essex into numerous turnovers, especially off of inbounds. By the end of the first half, Griswold was in full control of the game. Abby Gohlinhorst knocked down three field goals in the first half to help the Tigers to a 24-6 lead at the break.

The second half continued to see the Tigers distribute the ball. Four Tigers chipped in two field goals, including Abby Gohlinghorst, who finished the game with 10 points. Addison Adams also downed a pair of long balls to bring her total to 10. All in all, six Tigers finished the night with at least six points. Although the Trojans’ offense was more productive in the second half, Griswold kept their lead steady as they captured a solid 53-26 win. Head coach Aaron Houser was extremely proud of the seniors and the effort they put forth.

Regardless of who was on the floor, the Griswold defense locked down Essex and Houser credited the whole team.

Heading into the home stretch of the season, Houser said his team is continuing to improve and that he wants them to continue to compete as the postseason nears.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday when they head on the road to face Sidney.

Griswold Boys Complete Senior Night Sweep

Sports

February 1st, 2025 by Christian Adams

In game two of a senior night double-header, the Griswold Tigers boys basketball defeated the Essex Trojans 68-46 to complete a Friday night sweep. While the offense was efficient, the defense clogged lanes and caused turnovers throughout the game. Outside of outstanding individual effort, the Tigers shut down Essex en route to their third straight win.

Again, it was an all-senior starting line-up that got off to a hot start for Griswold. The offense was hot out of the as Griswold downed four three-pointers in the first quarter. In what was a team effort on offense overall, Zane Johnson led the Tigers in the early going, draining a pair of threes in the opening quarter while finishing the half with 12 points. Besides the offensive efficiency, the Griswold defense played an excellent first half. Playing a zone defense, the Tigers forced numerous turnovers by clogging the passing lanes and poking balls free. This helped fuel their solid offensive start and allowed them to use their speed in transition. Griswold even finished both quarters in stylish fashion. Although neither were buzzer beaters, the Tigers closed out each of the first two quarters by scoring with under a second. It was all around half for the Tigers as they went into the locker room with a commanding 40-17 lead.

The Tiger continued to press the pace, outscoring Essex 19-9 in the third quarter. Bode Wyman knocked down a pair of threes and 10 points in the frame that contributed to his team-leading 17 points and a 33 point lead. Although Wyman led the way in the half, Griswold’s game was still much more balanced than the Trojans’, and it was likely the difference in the game. 10 Tigers found their way onto the scoresheet by the end of the night, with four of them scoring over nine points. On the flip side, Essex’s Isiah Sholes put forth a phenomenal individual effort. Sholes accounted for 31 of the Trojans’ 46 points. He was especially active in the second half, knocking down six field goals while draining a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions. Although Sholes’ effort was able to trim the deficit, it would be nowhere near enough as Griswold closed out their third consecutive win. Head coach Ryan Lockwood was very proud of the effort the seniors gave not just tonight, but throughout the whole season.

He was also very pleased with his team’s rounded defensive effort.

With the postseason just weeks away, Lockwood wants to continue to see a high compete level from his group.

The win moves Griswold to 8-10 on the year. They will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Sidney for a matchup with the Cowboys.
