The Panthers won the first meeting 79-68 in Cedar Falls.

Iowa men host No. 7 Purdue tonight

Sports

February 4th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa will be without leading scorer and rebounder Owen Freeman tonight when the Hawkeyes host seventh ranked Purdue, tonight (Tuesday). Freeman will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery on an injured finger. Even with national player of the year Zach Edey gone Purdue coach Matt Painter has another competitive team. The Boilers are second in the Big Ten at 9-2.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says it always starts with defense and rebounding for Purdue.

Senior forward Payton Sandfort says it won’t be easy to replace Freeman’s production.

Sandfort says without Freeman rebounding must be a priority.

February 4th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Des Moines, Iowa) —A lawmaker from west-central Iowa has introduced a bill into the Iowa legislature that calls for a  permanent monument of Hawkeye legends Caitlin Clark and former coach Lisa Bluder. House File 203 was introduced Monday by State Rep. Carter Nordman of Panora. In a post on “X,” Rep. Nordman said “In honor of @CaitlinClark22’s jersey retirement and the historic success of @IowaWBB, I have filed a bill to commission a statue of Caitlin and @LisaBluder here on the Iowa Capitol complex.”

Nordman said also, “These two women have brought great pride and attention to our state and women’s sports. They deserve a place at their Capitol for Iowans to honor their incredible accomplishments!”

The monument would be located on the grounds of the Capitol, but a location would be determined later. It would be paid for by tax credits.

Iowa Native MLB Umpire Fired Following Gambling Investigation

Sports

February 4th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Major League Baseball announced Monday that it has fired umpire Pat Hoberg (Hoe-berg), an Urbandale native, for violating the league’s gambling rules. Information on the M-L-B website says an M-L-B investigation found no evidence that Hoberg placed bets on baseball or that he took any action to manipulate the outcomes of any games. But by sharing legal sports betting accounts with a professional poker player and friend who did place bets on baseball and by impeding the M-L-B investigation through the deletion of messages with the friend, Hoberg was ruled by M-L-B to have failed to uphold the integrity of the game.

The 38-year-old Hoberg first umpired Major League games in 2014 and became a full-time umpire in 2017. He umpired postseason games every year from 2018 to 2022 and was widely regarded as one of the game’s best ball-strike umpires.

No. 8 Iowa State falls at No. 16 Kansas

Sports

February 4th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Make it three losses in a row for Iowa State. Kansas raced out to a 16 point halftime and the 16th ranked Jayhawks beat the number eight Cyclones 69-52 in Lawrence, Monday night. Despite the loss, Cyclone coach T.J. Otzelbeger was pleased with the effort.

The Cyclones shot an ice cold 31 percent for the game, including three-of-21 from three point range.

Otzelberger says cold shooting did not impact the Cyclones in other areas of the game.

Keshon Gilbert, Joshua Jefferson and Tamin Lipsey all had 11 points as the Cyclones fall to 7-4 in the Big 12 and 17-5 overall. ISU returns to action Saturday by hosting TCU.

Atlantic Girls Win Thriller vs Exira-EHK

Sports

February 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

In a battle that came down to the final minute, the Atlantic Trojans girls basketball team defeated the Exira-EHK Spartans 56-48. Both teams had tremendous efforts up and down the court in what was a fast-moving quick-paced game. However, it was the depth scoring and ability to get to the free-throw line that ultimately made the difference for Atlantic.

The opening minutes of the game belonged to the Spartans. Taryn Petersen hit two three-pointers in the first quarter as Exira-EHK raced out to a 10-2 lead. However, the Trojans soon found their footing. Thanks to four points from Zoey Kirchhoff and Katrina Williams Atlantic scored 13 of the next 15 points to take a 3-point lead. Overall, the Trojans played better in the second quarter. Paytn Hartr started to hit her stride knocking down a pair of field goals and three free throws. Although Katrina Williams collected 12 points throughout the night, her and the Trojans were solid defensively. The only points Atlantic allowed in the second quarter were a Taryn Petersen field goal and three-pointer as the Trojans took a 29-17 lead to the half.

Much like the start of the game, the Spartans came out in the second half ready to go. Despite the start from Exira-EHK, early on it seemed like Atlantic had an answer for everything the Spartans threw at them. However, Exira-EHK continued to chip away. Petersen was fantastic for the Spartans. Leading the game with 34-points, she hit four threes as a part of her 14 points in the third quarter. This helped bring the Exira-EHK deficit to just two at the end of the third. However, this would be as close as the Spartans would get. Despite bringing the deficit back to two late in the game, they could not get over the hump. This was in large part due to the Trojans’ ability to not only get to the foul line but also convert. Throughout the course of the game Atlantic went 18-20 at the charity stripe. Eight of Kirchhoff’s fourteen points came off of free-throws. Depth scoring was also a factor. In addition to Kirchhoff and Williams, Hartr was the third Trojan to tally double digits points leading the team with 21. It was a well fought game, that Atlantic was able to pull away at the end. Head coach Dan Vargason was proud of his team’s ability to battle adversity.

In addition to their scoring, Vargason was also impressed with other attributes that Williams and Kirchhoff brought to the effort.

With just over a week left in the regular season, Vargason hopes his team continues to grow.

The win moves Atlantic to 13-6 while the Spartans fall to 14-4. Atlantic is back in action tomorrow when they face Red Oak while Exira-EHK remains at home against Paton-Churdan.

BYU’s Barber, ISU’s Brown and TCU’s Van Lith Collect Big 12 Women’s Basketball Weekly Recognition – 02/03/25 02:00 PM
Iowa State’s Addy Brown (co-player), TCU’s Hailey Van Lith (co-player) and BYU’s Kambree Barber (freshman) earned Big 12 women’s basketball weekly awards for their play during the 13th week of the season.

Brown posted a career-high 31 points against No. 9 TCU to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Earlier in the week, Brown poured in 20 points, her eighth 20-plus point performance of the season, on the road against then-No. 11 K-State. The sophomore from Derby, Kansas averaged 25.5 points per game during the week while shooting 70.4% from the field and 77.8% from three. This is the 2024 All-Big 12 Freshman Team member’s first Conference Player of the Week recognition.

Van Lith paired a season-high 28 points with eight assists and five rebounds in the Horned Frogs’ 82-69 win at Iowa State. The USA Basketball 3×3 Female Athlete of the Year scored seven of TCU’s first 13 points to spark a 13-2 run to open the game. Van Lith finished the game with an 8.0 assist-to-turnover ratio and has produced an A/TO of 2.5 or better 11 times this season. The Olympic bronze medalist’s efforts lifted the Horned Frogs to their first victory over the Cyclones in the last five years and helped claim the first career weekly Big 12 honor for Van Lith.

After missing BYU’s midweek game against Colorado due to injury, Barber earned her first career start against Arizona State and put up a career-high 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The Rigby, Idaho native grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds en route to her first career double-double while adding three assists, two blocks and a steal in the Cougars’ 77-67 win over the Sun Devils. Barber was the only league freshman to record a double-double during the week and led all league in rebounds per game and blocks per game while tying for the lead in points per game.
