Iowa State women win at Cincinnati

The Iowa State women outscored Cincinnati 19-11 in the first quarter, Wednesday night, and rolled to a 72-52 win on the road.

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. The Cyclones limited Cincinnati to 29 percent shooting and also out-rebounded the Bearcats 46-38.

The Cyclones are 7-5 in the Big 12.

Former Iowa star Cooper DeJean prepares for Super Bowl LIX

Former Iowa All-American Cooper DeJean will celebrate his 22nd birthday by playing in the Super Bowl when his Philadelphia Eagles play the Kansas City Chiefs. DeJean is one of the finalists for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

DeJean says playing at Iowa for head coach Kirk Feretz taught him how to handle the grind of an NFL season.

DeJean says playing for the Hawkeyes fulfilled a dream.

Sandfort Named to Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Midseason Top 10

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Payton Sandfort has been named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award Midseason top 10, it was announced Wednesday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Waukee, Iowa, native is one of two players from the Big Ten Conference on the list along with Rutgers’ Ace Bailey.  Other players include: Auburn’s Chad Baker-Mazara, Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Kentucky’s Jaxon Robinson, Oklahoma’s Jalon Moore, San Diego State’s Miles Byrd, St. John’s RJ Luis, UConn’s Liam McNeeley and North Carolina’s Ian Jackson.

Sandfort is averaging 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists on the season, while shooting 41 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from 3-point range.  He has a team-high 58 3-point field goals, which are tops in the Big Ten.

The forward has a team-best nine 20-point games, including tying a career-high with a 30-point outing (all in the second half and overtime) in the home win over Nebraska on Jan. 7.  He has scored in double figures in 19 games and has a pair of double-doubles.

Sandfort currently ranks third in program history with 245 career 3-point field goals and 19th in career scoring with 1,426 points.  His 89.2 career free throw percentage is currently No. 1 in program history.

Fan voting for the award will open on Friday, Feb. 7.  The top player selections from the fan vote will get an additional vote toward making the next round.

The list will be narrowed to the top five as the season progresses and finalists will be selected in late March.  The winner of the award will be announced during the Final Four weekend.

The Hawkeyes return to action Saturday, hosting No. 21 Wisconsin at noon on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.  Tickets are available through the Iowa Athletics Ticket Office and the game will be televised on NBC.

Olsen Earns National Player of the Week Honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior guard Lucy Olsen earned National Player of the Week Honors from the United States Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday.

Olsen was instrumental in Iowa’s huge upset over No. 4 USC on Sunday. She paced the game and Hawkeyes with 28 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the floor and also going 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Olsen’s 28-point performance was a career-high as a Hawkeye and it was also her sixth 20-point outburst of the season which is also a team-high.

In the second half against the Trojans, Olsen registered 23 of her 28 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. She was 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes.

Earlier in the week against Northwestern, Olsen registered 16 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Olsen has 13 career games of 10+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds.

Olsen and the Hawkeyes are set to travel to RV Minnesota on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (CT) inside Williams Arena and the game will broadcast on BTN and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Drake wins at Murray State 55-45

Bennet Stirtz scored 24 points and Tavion Banks added 16 as Drake won at Murray State 55-45. The Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to the Racers at home and swept their two game road trip to improve to 11-2 in the Missouri Valley and 21-2 overall.

That’s Drake coach Ben McCollum who liked the approach of his team in posting two convincing wins on the road trip.

Iowa falls to No. 7 Purdue 90-81

Seventh ranked Purdue scored 54 points in the second half and raced away to a 90-81 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City. Playing without leader scorer and rebounder Owen Freeman, Josh Dix and Payton Sandfort combined to score 50 points in a losing effort.

Purdue shot 55 percent and made nine three pointers in the second half.

Dix was 10-of-16 to score a team high 27 points.

Sandfort scored 23 points and added five assists and six rebounds as the game was tied at 36 at halftime.

The Hawkeyes are 4-7 in the Big Ten. Purdue improves to 10-2.
