Chiefs’ goal-line stand preserves 10-3 victory over Chargers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs kept the San Diego Chargers out of the end zone twice in the final seconds Sunday, preserving a 10-3 victory and their seventh consecutive win. Alex Smith threw for 191 yards and a touchdown, along with his first interception after a franchise-record 312 attempts. But it was a banged-up defense that held San Diego without a touchdown for the second time this season that allowed the Chiefs (8-5) to escape.

The Chargers (3-10) took over at their own 11 with 5 minutes left and quickly moved into Kansas City territory, converting fourth down three times. But after San Diego was called for delay of game at the Chiefs 1 with 5 seconds left, Philip Rivers threw incomplete into the end zone.

San Diego still had 2 seconds left, and an incomplete pass that would have ended the game was blown dead for a false start. With the ball pushed back to the 11-yard line, Rivers scrambled to his right and threw to the end zone, where his pass final pass fell incomplete. The Chiefs spilled onto the field to celebrate another big win in their playoff chase.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s women’s basketball team defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 70-41 at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday to move to 6-3. Freshman Bridget Carleton poured in 22 points, including a career-high six three-pointers.

The Cyclones closed the first quarter on 10-2 run, making their final six attempts from the field, to take a 23-18 lead. Seanna Johnson led the way for ISU with seven points and three rebounds in the first stanza.
The second quarter was the Bridget Carleton show. The freshman made four three-pointers in a four-minute stretch to extend the lead. Iowa State entered the halftime locker room with a 43-28 advantage.  Iowa State was able to go to its bench for the majority of the fourth quarter. The Iowa State defense surrendered just 13 points after halftime and held Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 32.7 percent shooting for the game.

Iowa State will be back in Hilton Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 20 to take on Alcorn State at 2 p.m.

Brown scores 25 to lead New Mexico past Northern Iowa 76-57

December 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Elijah Brown scored 25, including the final five points of the first half Saturday, helping New Mexico beat Northern Iowa 76-57. Brown’s surge capped an 8-0 Lobos’ run that broke a 27-27 tie – the seventh of the first half. That was a key stretch, however, as the Panthers (6-3) could get no closer than five points the rest of the way. Tim Williams added 19 for New Mexico (6-2), while Brown grabbed seven rebounds.

Northern Iowa got 12 off the bench from Wyatt Lohaus, while leading scorer Wes Washpun scored 10, six below his average. The Panthers had a chance to get back into the game early in the second half after cutting the deficit to 44-38. But they botched consecutive fast-break opportunities and threw it away on the next possession. That helped start the Lobos on a quick 7-0 burst that pushed the score to 51-38.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Bruce Anderson returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second straight week to help North Dakota State to a 23-13 victory over Northern Iowa in an FCS quarterfinal game Saturday. Anderson appeared to be corralled at the NDSU 40 but spun out of the tackle and sprinted in on a 97-yard scoring play. That turned a halftime deficit into a 14-10 lead.

NDSU (11-2) held UNI’s highly-touted running game in check most of the game. The Panthers (9-5) finished with 120 yards rushing. Bison running back King Frazier ran for 107 of his team’s 153 yards rushing. NDSU was outgained by a 2-1 margin in the first half but finished with a 269-221 advantage in total offense.

The four-time defending FCS champion Bison advance to the semifinals against Richmond.

Big 12 won’t punish Iowa St for students rushing court

Sports

December 12th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The Big 12 says it won’t discipline Iowa State after students stormed the basketball court in a scene that left a newspaper columnist with a broken leg. The league says Iowa State handled the postgame celebration consistent with the Big 12’s guidelines for sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

Randy Peterson of the Des Moines Register was knocked over while walking from press row to the postgame news conference after fans rushed the court Thursday night following Iowa State’s 83-82 win over rival Iowa.

Peterson broke the tibia and fibia in his left leg. On Friday, he says he has no problem with fans rushing the floor after a big win.
