CAM Boys Earn Win to Split Doubleheader with Exira-EHK

Sports

February 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The CAM Cougars boys basketball team earned a low-scoring win, defeating the Exira-EHK Spartans 54-33 Friday night. Although both teams defense’ were stingy, the Cougars found more consistent success. Although the Spartans battled to make it close in the third, CAM brought it in the fourth to pull away for their fourth consecutive win.

Neither offense found much success early on in the game. Both teams combined for 15 points in the opening quarter. It took nearly the first two minutes for the Cougars to grab the first two points of the game. This was in large part due to the way both teams defended. However, it was CAM who gained the slight edge. While the Cougars slowly started to pick up steam, the Spartans went through a bit of a drought early on, managing just a single three-ball. Meanwhile, CAM was able to find some balanced success in the paint. While Colin Bower scored the first six points of the game for CAM, six different Cougars tallied field goals in the second half as they opened up a 26-11 lead at the half.

Exira-EHK played their best basketball of the game in the third quarter. Josh Nelson scored six of his team leading 15 points in the thrid quarter to help chip away at the deficit. The Spartans were also able to drop a trio of long balls that brought the deficit to as little as six. However, the Cougars found their footing again halfway through the third and carried that momentum into the fourth. Bower knocked five field goals and three pointer in the fourth quarter to help CAM pull away. Gunnar Hogueison didnt finsish far behind with 13. Head coach Ian Hunt was happy with his team’s ability to stick with it despite the offense not always clicking.

Hunt was happy with the way his team defended the outside against a Spartan team know for shooting.

Heading into the postseason Hunt says its all about the details and carrying some momentum into round one.

The win moves the Cougars to an even 10-10 record on the year while Exira-EHK falls to 4-16. CAM will be back action Monday when they visit Ar-We-Va while the Spartans vist Red Oak on Tuesday night.

Exira-EHK Girls Open Doubleheader at CAM with Win

Sports

February 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Exira-EHK girls basketball team opened up a Friday doubleheader with a 56-49 win over the Cam Cougars. In addition to being CAM’s senior night, it was also a pink out that both teams and the community showed out for.  On the floor, it was a close game that seemed to go back and forth for much of the contest. However, the Spartans were able to pull away in the fourth quarter to secure their sixteenth win of the season.

In the first quarter, it was the offenses that showed out. Both teams combined for 37 points, which was as much as the next two quarters combined. Once again, Taryn Petersen led the way for the Spartans. Petersen knocked down a pair of field goals and a three-pointer to finish the opening frame with nine points. Although the Spartans built a five-point lead, the Cougars responded. Ailey Wahlert knocked down three of her five first-half field goals in the opening quarter. However, Exira-EHK squeezed out of the first quarter with a three-point lead. The offenses slowed down in the second quarter. However, it was CAM that would grab the edge, outscoring the Spartans 12-8. In part due to an Ada Hansen bucket just before the buzzer, the Cougars took a 29-28 lead to the half.

Offense was once again at a premium in the third quarter. It was the lowest-scoring frame of the game, featuring just 17 combined points. Out of the gate, CAM seemed determined to extend the lead. Although both teams found themselves in foul trouble,  a pair of Cougars found themselves with four fouls halfway through the period and were forced to sit. CAM’s bench did a phenomenal job of holding down the fort. However, Exira-EHK started to find their stride again. Taryn Petersen scored 17 points in the second half and finished the game with a game-leading 30 points. With help from Jaelynn Petersen and Riley Miller, the Spartans were able to build a sizable lead late in the fourth. CAM battled to the very end, with Maddie Richter leading the Cougars with 17 points. Despite the effort, it would not be enough as Exira-EHK pulled away with their fifth win in six games. Head coach Tom Petersen was pleased that his team found a way to win despite not playing their best.

Great play is not always linked to points as a bright spot for coach Petersen was the play of Riley Miller.

As the playoffs are fast approaching and with matchups already set, coach Petersen says his team’s focus will need to be on their defense.

Each team will close out their 2024-25 campaign next week before heading into the postseason. The Cougars will wrap up the season on the road Monday against Ar-We-Va before returning home to face Griswold in the first round on Thursday. For the Spartans, they will play a final game against Newell-Fonall next week. They will also return home to face Underwood in the first round on the 18th.

Hometown pride for Cooper DeJean, Odebolt native who’ll play in Sunday’s Super Bowl

News, Sports

February 7th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Northwest Iowa native Cooper DeJean will be starting for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl on Sunday. After a standout college career at Iowa, the N-F-L rookie is having an impressive season. He grew up in the small town of Odebolt in Sac County. Larry Allen, his high school coach, says the whole community is proud of what DeJean has accomplished.

Allen said also…

Allen, by the way, is switching allegiances to back his former player.

A Super Bowl watch party is planned at the community center in Odebolt. Allen says most have spent the season cheering for DeJean’s team.

A Super Bowl win for the Eagles would be a big birthday present for DeJean, who turns 22 on Sunday.
