Atlantic Boys Fall to Harlan in Double Header Opener in Des Moines

Sports

February 12th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team fell to the Harlan Cyclones 59-44 in Des Moines Tuesday night. Despite a good showing in the opening quarter the Trojans were unable to carry that momentum through the rest of the game. Although the game remained competitive in the second quarter the cyclones were able to pull away in the second half to pick up there seventh win of the season.

Atlantic had a very good showing in the first quarter. The game went back and forth early on and Atlantic led for most of the first quarter. Although Harlan did not play their best, the Trojans were able take advantage of opportunities. Kinnick Juhl knocked down a pair of long balls while Shelton Mualia and Gavin McLaren grabbed two field goals each as the game was tight one heading into the second.

Harlan played much better in the second half. They cleaned up a lot of their turnovers and started to find more of an offensive groove. After being held to a single field goal and four free throws in the opening frame, Dallas McDowell doubled his output in the second quarter. McDowell scored nine of Harlan’s 12 points in the frame. Although Atlantic played well enough to stay in the game, the momentum had switch as the cyclones went to the locker room with a 28-23 lead.

Despite being a close game at the half, the Trojans were never able to recapture their form from the first quarter. Although they had bursts of good play (including some good offensive rebounding), they could not find a long, extended run to chip into the growing Cyclone lead. Sawyer Terrell hit on a pair of long balls while Mualia led the way in the second half with a trio of field goals to finish with 10 points.  Juhl added a field goal and a three-pointer to lead the team with 11. McDowell added 12 more points for Harlan to lead the game with 27.

The Trojans fell to 2-17 on the year and will be back in action on Friday when they visit Lenox. The Cyclones moved to 7-11 and will be back at home Thursday to face off against Treynor

Kinnick Juhl led the way for Atlantic with 11 points while Shelton Mualia wasnt far behind with 10

Lawmakers pitch bill to bring baseball back to two state universities

News, Sports

February 12th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A bill in the Iowa House would require Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa to revive their baseball programs. Representative Skyler Wheeler of Hull – the head coach of the Unity Christian High School baseball team — is the bill’s author.

U-N-I last fielded a baseball team during the 2009 season and I-S-U’s baseball program was shut down in May of 2001. Athletics directors for both schools cited budget constraints when announcing those decisions. Carolann Jenson — a lobbyist for the board that governs all three state universities — suggests a lot has changed since the programs were terminated.

The University of Iowa is the only one of the three state universities to have a baseball program today.

Wheeler, a native of Washington state, played first baseman for Red Raiders of the Northwestern University in Orange City.

N-C-Double-A rules allow division one baseball programs to offer nearly 12 total scholarships — and the roster is limited to 27 players. The bill has cleared a House subcommittee with the support of Wheeler and another Republican. The panel’s other member — Democratic Representative Dave Jacoby (juh-COH-bee) of Coralville — says he’ll back the bill if it also requires Iowa State and U-N-I to add women’s wrestling programs.

Over 200 Iowa high schools had a girl’s wrestling program this year. In 2021, the University of Iowa added a women’s wrestling program.

Atlantic Girls Beat Harlan for Second Time Since ’08

Sports

February 12th, 2025 by Christian Adams

In one of their most complete performances of the season, the Atlantic Trojans girls basketball team defeated the Harlan Cyclones 63-41 in Des Moines Tuesday night. It marks just the second time since 2008 that the Trojans have beaten Harlan. In both team’s regular-season finale, Atlantic was the better team from start to finish. They defended well, shot well, and arguably most importantly, got to the free-throw line with frequency.  The win gave the Trojans its fourth consecutive win and is their third separate four-game winning streak of the season.

The first quarter was extremely competitive, with the teams going back and forth. However, it was apparent early on that Atlantic was willing to play a bruising game in the paint. The Trojans earned eight free throws in the first quarter alone and cashed in on seven. Katrina Williams made five in the opening frame as a part of her 11 points from the charity stripe. At the end of the quarter, Atlantic built a slim three-point lead while knocking down just a single field goal. Zoey Kirchhoff led the way for the Trojans in the second. Knocking down three field goals, she finished the half with nine points. On the defensive side of the ball, the Trojans were just as good. They allowed 10 points or less in three quarters, including the first two. They also limited Harlan’s top scorer Aubrey Schwieso to a single three-pointer in each half. Heading into the locker room, Atlantic had earned a 20-19 halftime lead.

If there was any doubt about the Trojans’ ability to carry it across the finish line, they squashed it early on in the second. Atlantic was able to execute their game plan at nearly the same level throughout the rest of the contest. Although Harlan had their best offensive output in the third, the Trojans kept them at arm’s length. Grace Albertsen and Molly Swensen ended the game sharing the team lead with 11 points. When all was said and done four of the Trojans’ five starters finished with double-digit points. Lila Wiederstein led the second half with 10 points and shared the game lead with Williams finishing with 15 points. Kirchhoff wasn’t far behind with 11, while Patyn Hartr added 10. Head coach Dan Vargason was proud of his team’s effort and said the game was a confidence booster heading into the postseason.

In addition to her efforts on defensive and the glass, Vargason was pleased with the way Williams answered the call after the team’s loss at Harlan earlier in the year.

The regular season now complete,  the Trojans will start preparations for their opening round game against Clarinda and Vargason says the mindset is to start at square one.

Atlantic will host Clarinda on Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 7 pm.
