The 10th ranked Iowa State men return to Big 12 play at home on Saturday against Cincinnati. The Cyclones are 9-4 in the league race. The Bearcats are 5-8 but they enter the game riding a three game win streak.
That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger who says Cincinnati is playing with a lot of confidence.
Otzelberger says a key will be slowing down Cincinnati point guard Jizzle James.
The Iowa Hawkeye women had to grind out their sixth straight victory. Lucy Olsen scored 27 points as the Hawkeyes beat Rutgers 55-43. Iowa won despite shooting only 37 percent and committing 16 turnovers.
That’s Iowa coach Jan Jensen. The Hawkeyes built a 16 point lead midway through the fourth quarter but only scored nine points in the final quarter as they improve to 8-6 in the Big Ten.
Olsen finished 11-of-19 from the field and four-of-five from three point range.
The McLeod Center in Cedar Falls hosts an in-state wrestling dual on Sunday afternoon when fourth ranked UNI hosts 14th rated Iowa State. The Panthers are 12-1 in duals and coach Doug Schwab is hoping to set an attendance record against the Cyclones.
Schwab on what this series means to him.
The Cyclones have won the last five duals in the series. UNI will be in search of its first victory over the Cyclones since 2019.
The Cyclones are 10-4 and will open the weekend Friday night at 11th ranked South Dakota State.
That’s ISU coach Kevin Dresser who expects an electric atmosphere in the McLeod Center.
Dresser says it will be a challenging weekend for the Cyclones.
Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller is looking for improved pitching as the Hawkeyes get set to open the season Friday night with the first of a three game series at South Florida. Last season Hawkeye pitchers walked or hit 424 batters and it was a big factor in a disappointing 31-23 record.
Heller says the focus has been on limiting free bases.
Heller believes if the pitching and defense is good the Hawkeyes will score enough runs to be successful.
(Radio Iowa) – Lawmakers who represent two northeast Iowa school districts struggling to join a new athletic conference are sponsoring bills to establish a new committee to review conference re-alignment. The Decorah school district, for example, has lost its appeals to state officials and its teams will not be in a conference next year. Representative Michael Bergan, of Dorchester, represents Decorah in the Iowa House.
The bill calls for a new committee to be formed to evaluate the enrollment in conference schools, traditional rivalries and the compatibility of extracurricular activities among conference members.
Bergan says this is similar to the process used in Wisconsin.
House Speaker Pat Grassley is co-sponsoring the House bill with Bergan. Grassley represents the Waverly-Shell Rock District, which left the Northeast Iowa Conference at the end of the last school year and its bid to join the WaMac Conference was denied. A senate bill on the topic of conference realignment that’s identical to the House bill is co-sponsored by Senators Mike Klemish, of Spillville, and Sandy Salmon, of Janesville.
