Chiefs reach deal with OL Mitchell Schwartz

Sports

March 9th, 2016 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a five-year contract with former Browns offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the Chiefs had not announced the deal.

Schwartz played every game for Cleveland last season as the bookend to Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas. The second-round pick in the 2012 draft is the brother of former Giants offensive guard Geoff Schwartz, who played for Kansas City during the 2013 season.

The Chiefs also agreed to a deal with outside linebacker Jonathan Massaquoi as free agency began.

Meanwhile, the franchise was docked two draft picks and ordered to pay a $250,000 fine for violating the NFL’s anti-tampering rules in their discussions with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin last year. The Chiefs said in a statement they will appeal the penalties.

Molina to make spring training debut catching for Cardinals

Sports

March 9th, 2016 by admin

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is set to make his spring training debut behind the plate, with defensive limitations in place.

The All-Star is coming off two thumb operations and will be wearing a splint. He is not ready to hit and was ninth in the batting order Wednesday against the Miami Marlins. St. Louis planned to replace him with a pinch hitter after a couple innings.

Manager Mike Matheny said this was the target date given by medical staff for the 33-year-old Molina to play for the first time. Matheny said Molina has looked good swinging off a tee and with soft toss.

St. Louis acquired free agent Brayan Pena in the offseason. He is expected to play more than the previous backup, Tony Cruz.

AP Source: Chiefs, LB Tamba Hali agree to 3-year contract

Sports

March 8th, 2016 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the Chiefs and Tamba Hali have agreed to a three-year contract to keep the veteran linebacker in Kansas City.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal had not been announced.

The 32-year-old Hali is coming off his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl, despite practicing on a limited basis much of the season because of a troublesome knee. He also had a broken thumb late in the year.

Still, the Chiefs’ former first-round pick finished with 6 1-2 sacks while starting 14 of the 15 games he played. That gave him 86 for his career, matching Neil Smith for second-most in franchise history.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Michael Wacha gave up one run over two innings in his first start of the exhibition season as the St. Louis Cardinals beat a Minnesota Twins’ split squad 5-3 Tuesday.

A right-hander who led the Cardinals with 17 wins last season, Wacha allowed singles to Brian Dozier and Eduardo Escobar starting the first. Joe Mauer followed with a run-scoring, double-play grounder. Wacha gave up two hits in all.

Ricky Nolasco, competing for a spot in the Twins rotation, gave up three hits in three scoreless innings, struck out four and hit a batter,

Anthony Garcia hit the Cardinals’ first home run of spring training, a two-run drive in the sixth against Logan Darnell.

Aledmys Diaz had four hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals.

PG Mike Gesell blossoms into unheralded star for Iowa

Sports

March 8th, 2016 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jarrod Uthoff and Peter Jok have dominated the headlines for the Hawkeyes this season.

But Iowa might not be headed to its third straight NCAA Tournament — a feat it hasn’t accomplished in over two decades — without senior point guard Mike Gesell.

Gesell, whose successful recruitment was a crucial building block in coach Fran McCaffery’s rebuilding job, has grown from a four-star prep to an unheralded star and a steadying presence for the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes (21-9, 12-6 Big Ten).

They open league tournament play Thursday against either Minnesota or Illinois.
