Drake men visit Evansville Wednesday night

Sports

February 25th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Leading scorer Bennnett Stirtz gets a lot of the headlines but coach Ben McCollum says effort and unselfish play has made this a championship season for Drake. Not only are the Bulldogs the top defensive team in the Missouri Valley Conference they also are the league’s top rebounding team. Sophomore forward Cam Manyawu and junior forward Tavion Banks combined for 20 rebounds in Sunday’s overtime win at UNI that clinched at least a share of the Valley title.

McCollum says it is an example of the unselfish nature of the Bulldogs.

Drake can clinch the outright Missouri Valley title Wednesday night with a victory at Evansville.

Bill requires sports betting companies to withhold Iowa taxes from Iowans’ winnings

News, Sports

February 25th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A senate subcommittee has unanimously voted to require that online sports wagering companies withhold state taxes from Iowans who win at least five-thousand dollars. Tyler Ackerson of the Iowa Department of Revenue says the bill makes it easier for sports book operators to know when to withhold taxes.

The bill would align Iowa’s withholding requirement with federal tax policy.

ALL winning bets on sporting events are considered ordinary taxable income and Iowans are to pay a six-point-75 percent tax on those winnings — regardless of the amount of their winning wagers.

Atlantic Boys Fall to Ballard

Sports

February 24th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans boys’ basketball season came to an end in Huxley Monday night. The Trojans dropped their postseason opener 71-27 to the Ballard Bombers in the first round of the Class 3A-District 8 postseason tournament. Despite the hard fought effort it was not enough to keep the Bombers at bay.

Ballard wasted no time putting getting on the scoreboard as they fed off of a few defensive turnovers which quickly turned into points. The Bombers went up 5-0 in the first few minutes, but the aggression of Junior Forward Gavin McLaren earned him trips to the free throw line all night long, as he knocked down his first two if the night to put Atlantic on the board.

Ballard consistently had the ability to attack the rim but also shoot well from outside the perimeter, including two first quarter three pointers to give the Bombers a 20-4 lead after the first quarter.

The Bombers didn’t shy away from the outside shooting in the second quarter. Ballard connected from three in the second frame four times including twice from Senior Guard Miles Mudd. The Trojans kept pushing towards the rim as the second quarter came to a close enhancing the foul troubles for the Bombers.

As the third quarter began, Ballard had a 41-11 lead. The Bombers looked into their bench, including Senior Guard Lincoln Miller who hit two threes.  Atlantic continued to bring pressure to the Bombers on both sides of the ball but the Trojans were unable to keep pace with Ballard’s defense throughout the game.

Miles Mudd led all scorers with 13 for the Bombers, while Gavin McLaren led Atlantic with seven. The Trojans graduate four Seniors and will return a large portion of their roster heading into next season.

QUOTING HEAD COACH SASHA BOROS

“Today was a good bounce back from a disappointing loss against K-State earlier this weekend. I’m proud of the way we’ve responded to some heartbreak. This nonconference season we have let some matches go, but we’ve always responded with resiliency, and we’ve grown. I saw the team have a lot of heart and soul today. We come out of the nonconference season playing some good tennis and notching some good wins. We’ve had a few heartbreaks, but I think that’s all part of the journey. Big Ten play starts now.”

Iowa men visit Illinois Tuesday night

Sports

February 24th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeye men take a 6-10 Big Ten record on the road Tuesday night to play struggling Illinois. The Illini have lost three straight and had a rare late non-conference game against second ranked Duke over the weekend in Madison Square Garden and were throttled 110-67.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Despite losing nearly everyone from a team that made it to the Elite Eight last season the Illini have another talented team.

McCaffery says the Illini will force them to guard the three point line.

McCaffery continues to be impressed by the effort of his team during the stretch run.

Illinois is 9-8 in the Big Ten.
