Iowa State Falls Twice on Opening Day of Mardi Gras Mambo

Sports

March 1st, 2025 by Christian Adams

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Iowa State (6-9) opened up the Mardi Gras Mambo Friday afternoon, dropping a pair of contests to Stephen F. Austin (6-10) and Southeastern (13-6).
Iowa State fell to the Lumberjacks in the opening game of the tournament, 4-3, in eight innings. After putting three on the board in the first, ISU’s offense was held silent for the remainder of the afternoon as SFA clawed back in and eventually walked it off.
ISU played tournament host Southeastern in the final game of the day, falling to the 2024 Regional Final squad by a score of 9-3. ISU again found itself with three runs in the first two innings, but SLU would stack quality at-bats together to eventually earn the win.
Stephen F. Austin 4, Iowa State 3 (8 Inn.)
Iowa State looked well on its way to a tournament-opening win, as it started hot out of the gates against SFA. The Cyclones plated a trio of runs in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The Lumberjacks used three single run innings to claw back into things before taking it to extras and eventually winning.
Sereniti Trice led the Cyclones with a pair of hits on the day with five other Cyclones recording a hit. Sydney Malott added to her team-best 14 RBI on the season, notching a pair on her third homer of the year.
Aziza Rodriguez got the start, as three Cyclones saw the circle. Rodriguez gave up a pair of runs (1 earned) on a pair of hits in two innings pitched before Lauren Schurman (2-5) took over. Schurman threw 5.1 innings and gave up a pair of runs (1 earned).
How it Happened
Iowa State took the plate first in the opening inning, putting a three-spot on the board. The Cyclones led the game off with back-to-back singles from Sereniti Trice and Angelina Allen to put runners on the corners. A sac fly from Jessie Clemons would score Trice and put the Cyclones up. Next up, Sydney Malott clobbered her third homer of the year, a two-run blast, to score Allen and make it 3-0 in favor of ISU.
The Lumberjacks got one back in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on an ISU error. A throwing error allowed the first runner to reach and advance before being moved over and then scored on back-to-back groundouts to make it 3-1.
The Lumberjacks added one more in the third, after a scoreless second by each team. A leadoff triple was driven in on the very next at-bat, a single, to make it 3-2 in favor of Iowa State.
The ‘Jacks would tie things up in the fourth, using a pair of singles to put runners on the corners early. Then, with one out, SFA grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring a third run.
The two teams would combine for one hit over the last three innings, with neither bringing a run across. For the second time this season, ISU went to extras.
In the eighth, the international tiebreaker rule was assessed, as each team was given a ghost runner on second. ISU was unable to bring in any runs, so the frame flipped to the bottom.
With runners on the corners and one out, Mikaelah Burkland singled into left field to plate the winning run via walkoff fashion.

Southeastern 9, Iowa State 3
Iowa State again got off to a quick start in game two, taking an early 2-0 lead and then another 3-2 lead. Southeastern though showed how it made a regional final last year; opportunistic base-running and timely hitting. It would score seven unanswered runs to earn its 13th win of the season.
ISU totaled nine hits in the game, with Jessie Clemons and Tatum Johnson leading the way with a trio of hits apiece – tied for a game-high. Johnson and Ashley Minor each had an RBI, while three other Cyclones collected hits.
Abby Huhn (1-1) got her second start of the season, picking up her first loss. Lauren Schurman and Jaiden Ralston also saw the circle for ISU.

How it Happened
Following a scoreless first, Iowa State put a pair on the board in the top of the second. A Tatum Johnson leadoff double gave ISU its first baserunner of the inning. A Maddie Knowles single would advance Johnson and put runners on the corners. Ashley Minor would pinch hit for ISU and reached on a fielder’s choice that would plate Johnson and give Minor her second RBI of the season. Next up, Trice hit into a fielder’s choice, but a bad throw by the second baseman would allow Knowles to score from second and put ISU up, 2-0.
SLU would open the second putting a pair of runners on via single and walk before a sac bunt would move them both into scoring position. A Lion RBI double would then knot the game at two as the game shifted to the third.
Clemons led off the third with a single before eventually moving to second on a groundout. A Johnson single into right would be enough to score Clemons from second, as ISU retook the lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Southeastern would plate two in the bottom of the third as well as the fourth and fifth as it extended its lead to 8-3 before adding a ninth run in the sixth.

CLEBURNE, Texas – The University of Iowa baseball team lost, 7-4, to Washington State on Friday afternoon at La Moderna Field. The Hawkeyes had 10 hits to the Cougars’ 13. Each team stranded 11 runners on base.

Iowa used four pitchers on Friday. LHP Cade Obermueller started on the mound for the Hawkeyes and was credited with the loss. He gave up four runs – three earned – and eight hits while striking out seven in six innings of work.  Anthony Watts (0.2 IP), Brant Hogue (2.0 IP) and Gannon Archer (0.1 IP), came out of the bullpen, yielding three earned runs on five hits while punching out three Cougars.

Junior Caleb Wulf led Iowa at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a double. Transfer Jackson Beaman went 1-for-3, hitting his third home run as a Hawkeye.

Iowa got on the board first when Wulf hit a two-out RBI double to score junior Miles Risley. The second and third innings were scoreless for both squads.

Washington State took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning after an RBI bunt single and a throwing error. Iowa regained the lead on a Wulf RBI single in the fifth.

The Cougars responded, scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to go up, 6-3. The Hawkeyes plated one more in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it for the offense.

Hawkeyes Split in Day 1 of Woo Pig Classic

Sports

March 1st, 2025 by Christian Adams

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Iowa softball team went 1-1 on day one of the Wooo Pig Classic at Bogle Park on Friday. Iowa defeated Missouri State, 8-0 (6 innings), before falling to No. 11 Arkansas, 9-0 (5 innings).
Junior Jalen Adams (8-1) made her seventh start of the season against Missouri Sate. Adams threw the complete game and allowed no runs on two hits, while fanning two. Seven Hawkeyes registered at least one hit. Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry picked up her team-leading, fourth home run of the season.
Freshman Talia Tretton (3-1) got the start against the Razorbacks, throwing 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by sophomore Jaylee Ojo and senior Haley Downe. Senior Tatianna Roman had the lone Iowa hit of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Adams got the start in the circle for Iowa and pitched her fifth complete game of the season.
Missouri State started the game going three up and three down in the first inning. In the home half of the inning, sophomore Jena Young led off with a double to left center. Berry came up to the plate and hit a home run to center field to give Iowa the early lead, 2-0.
Both teams managed to scatter runners over the next four innings but neither team capitalized as it turned into a pitchers battle.
In the sixth, Iowa started off hot as senior Tatianna Roman doubled to deep left field followed by a walk for freshman Allyssa Ramos. Sophomore Devin Simon brought Roman home on an RBI double to right center. On the next pitch, Ramos was able to score on a passed ball to extend the Hawkeye lead to four. Young followed with an RBI fielders choice to score Simon. Iowa stayed patient at the plate drawing four straight walks with two of them being with the bases loaded to give RBIs to senior Hannah Lindsay and redshirt junior Desiree Rivera to make it, 7-0, Iowa. After a Missouri State pitching change, Tretton reached first on a fielding error which allowed Bennett to score to end the game in run-rule fashion.
The Hawkeyes finished the game with eight runs on eight hits and no errors. Missouri State finished the game with no runs, two hits and one error.

Game 2
Game two of the afternoon started scoreless through the first two innings as neither team was able to record a hit.

In the top of the third, the Hawkeyes were retired in order. Tretton started the bottom of the inning with a strikeout but Arkansas loaded the bases after three walks. The Razorbacks scored the first run of the game on an RBI singe. Arkansas tacked on two more runs in the inning on a sac fly and an RBI single to make it, 3-0.
Iowa managed to get Young and Bennett into scoring position with two outs but were unable to plate a run. In the fourth, Arkansas had its first two runners reach as Tretton was taken out and relieved by Ojo. Ojo faced four batters in the inning, with all four reaching on a walk or hit by pitch as the Razorback extended their lead to six. Downe entered in relief with one out walked the first batter she faced, giving Arkansas another free run. Iowa got out of the inning down 7-0.
Roman recorded a one out single in the fifth to pick up Iowa’s first hit of the game, but that was it in the inning as the next two Hawkeyes hitters were retired. Arkansas closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth as its leadoff hitter reached via walk and then the next hitter launched a walk off two-run home run.
Iowa finished the game with no runs on one hit and one error, while Arkansas had nine runs on six hits and no errors. Hawkeye pitchers allowed 10 free passes in the game.
NOTABLES
  • Berry’s home run in game one against Missouri State was her fourth of the season and fifth of her career.
  • Five run-rule wins is the most in a season since 2010 when the Hawkeyes had seven.

Dave DiIanni Extended Through 2029

Sports

February 28th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer head coach Dave DiIanni has signed a contract extension through the 2029 season the school announced on Thursday.

DiIanni is coming off his 11th season as helm of head coach in Iowa City where he led the program to its fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament and first appearance in the Round of 16. The Hawkeyes amassed a 15-3-4 overall record, tying a program record for wins in a season. Iowa hosted an NCAA Tournament game in back-to-back seasons. The Hawkeyes drew a crowd, finishing the season 13th nationally in attendance and second in the Big Ten.

Iowa finished third in the Big Ten regular season standings, finishing 8-2-1 in conference play, the third-place finish tied a program record while also setting a record for Big Ten regular season wins in a season. The Hawkeyes were ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll top 25 every week of the 2024 campaign, something that previously had never been done in program history.

In DiIanni’s 22 years as a head coach he has accumulated a 334-95-44 record. At Iowa, he has led the program to a 113-77-26 record. In his previous stint at Grand Valley State, DiIanni led the Lakers to three NCAA Division II national championships, nine-consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference titles, and 11-straight NCAA Tournament Berths.

Since the 2019 season, the Hawkeyes have won two Big Ten championships, won each of four NCAA tournament games in program history, made four of the five NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, earned 12 postseason wins, posted 53 shutouts, and saw DiIanni become the all-time winningest coach in program history.

Iowa’s spring season gets underway on March 8th, where they host Iowa State at the Indoor Football Practice Facility. The match is set for 5:00 p.m. (CT) and is free admission to the public.

Drake Women Handle Fiery Sycamore Squad In Home Finale

Sports

February 28th, 2025 by Christian Adams

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women’s basketball team capped off the home portion of its regular-season schedule with a record-breaking first half that carried over to a 107-86 romp past over Indiana State at the Knapp Center on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs kept their composure while Indiana State got off to a sizzling start and took control once the short-handed Sycamores cooled down to earn a decisive bounce-back victory after Saturday’s disappointing overtime loss to Missouri State.

Playing what could be her final game at the Knapp Center, senior Katie Dinnebier topped 30 points for the nation-leading eighth time this season, scoring 35 to propel Drake (19-9, 13-4) to its eighth victory in the last nine games.

She had plenty of help in this one. Dinnebier, Abbie Aalsma, Courtney Becker and Anna Miller all reached double figures in the first half as Drake took a 59-49 lead. The 59 points were the most ever by a Drake team in the opening half of a game. It’s the third time this season the Bulldogs have scored 50 or more points in a half and they first time they reached the century mark in a game since a 107-98 victory over Murray State on Jan. 21, 2024.

Dinnebier, topping 30 points for the third time in the last four games, hit four 3-pointers and a variety of layups in going 12-for-19 from the field. She also handed out 10 assists for her seventh double-double of the season, grabbed six rebounds and made two steals.

Becker finished with 20 points on 9-for-11 shooting and Aalsma scored 16, making 6-of-8 shots with four treys and handing out a career-high six assists. Miller wound up with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks as the Bulldogs finished with a season-best 28 assists and shot 59.2 percent.

Freshman Maggie Taylor matched her career high with 11 rebounds in 12 solid minutes and scored two points.

All this came about after Indiana State (4-24, 2-15), with only eight active players, stunned the Bulldogs by scoring the game’s first nine points and rocketing to a 22-11 lead in the first 4 1/2 minutes. The Sycamores were 8-for-11 with four threes at that point and looked nothing like a team that had won only four games.

Then Dinnebier went to work, accounting for 10 straight Drake points to pull the Bulldogs to 22-21. She started that run with a layup, hit a three from the top of the key, fed Brooklin Dailey for a layup and then buried another triple from the same spot to get the Bulldogs back into it.

The points just kept coming as the two teams matched each other basket for basket. The wild opening quarter ended with Indiana State leading 35-33 and shooting 68.4 percent (13-of-19). Drake shot 60 percent in the quarter and Dinnebier scored 17 points, yet the Bulldogs still trailed.

Indiana State stretched its lead to 42-35 and was up 47-43 before the Bulldogs finished the half with a flourish, outscoring the Sycamores 16-2 and holding them scoreless the final 3:23 of the half to open that 59-49 lead.

Dinnebier finished the half with 21 points, Aalsma had 14, Becker 12 and Miller 10. Indiana State missed its final five shots of the half and seven of the last eight and never regained its touch. After that hot opening quarter, the Sycamores shot just 35 percent the rest of the way and finished at 43 percent.

Three straight baskets from Shannon Fornshell and a Becker layup pushed Drake’s lead to 69-53 and the Bulldogs stayed ahead by double figures the rest of the way.

The closest Indiana State got was 79-69 with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. Eighty seconds later, the Bulldogs were up by 19 thanks to nine straight Dinnebier points. She converted a 3-point play off a driving layup, knocked down a three from the top of the key, then converted another 3-point play off a slick reverse layup that drew a roar from the crowd.

Drake led 88-73 going into the final quarter and the only question that remained was when the Bulldogs would reach 100. They got there on Peyton McCabe’s free throw with 4:49 left. By then, all the Drake starters were watching from the bench.

“The first quarter was exciting, kind of wish it was a little less so, but we fought, we battled, especially when Indiana State was able to build their early lead,” said Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Allison Pohlman. “We dug our feet in the sand…I was pleased with our depth shining through. A lot to learn from today but proud of our squad to get a win like this in the Knapp Center. We just needed to hit the reset button, and we did. Credit to Indiana State, they came in ready to play…a testament to how deep the Missouri Valley Conference is.”

Indiana State got 24 points each from Savannah White and Keslyn Secrist and 22 from Bella Finnegan.

With Missouri State’s loss at Murray State on Thursday night, the Bulldogs now trail the league-leading Lady Bears by only one game.

Drake finishes the season with three road games, starting Saturday at Northern Iowa. Tip-off time is set for 2 p.m. in the McLeod Center.

Hawkeyes Drop Game 1 to Washington State

Sports

February 28th, 2025 by Christian Adams

CLEBURNE, Texas – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated, 12-7, on Thursday afternoon by Washington State at La Moderna Field.

The Hawkeyes outhit the Cougars 16-10 but left 14 runners stranded.

“Our first try at a mid-week game didn’t go so well,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We didn’t pitch or play well. The offense fought hard and gave us a chance, but we just couldn’t get a shutdown inning after we scored. Too many free bases did us in. After scoring two in the top of the sixth we gave them five runs without a hit. You’re not going win when that happens.”

Iowa used eight different pitchers in a bullpen game for the Hawkeyes. Bryson Walker got the start and was tagged with the loss, allowing 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning. The pitching staff walked seven and hit five batters while striking out nine.

Five Hawkeyes tallied multi-hit games on the offensive side. Gable Mitchell has three hits while Miles Risley, Andy Nelson, Kooper Schulte and Ben Wilmes each tallied two. Caleb Wulf and Schulte each had two RBIs and Wilmes, Jackson Beaman and Max Burt each plated one.

Washington State scored six runs across the first three innings to open the game before Iowa responded with two in the fourth. The Cougars answered back with a run in the fifth and despite two Hawkeye runs in the top half of the sixth, a five run bottom half would make it 11-4. Iowa added one run in the seventh and two in the eighth but couldn’t complete the comeback.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes continue the four-game series with the Cougars with game two tomorrow starting at 2 p.m. (CT). Cade Obermueller will start for the Hawkeyes and the game can be heard on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Iowa men visit Northwestern Friday night

Sports

February 27th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery believes all 18 Big Ten teams should take part in the conference post season tournament. Only the top 15 teams qualify for the Big Ten Tournament and the Hawkeyes are on the cut line right now as they take a 6-11 league record to Northwestern Friday night.

McCaffery says the coaches were in favor of including all 18 teams.

Northwestern is also 6-11 in the Big Ten and battling for its postseason life. The Hawkeyes won the first meeting at the buzzer back on December third but McCaffery says both are different teams after battling injuries.

McCaffery says the injuries have forced Northwestern coach Chris Collins to adjust.

No. 9 Iowa State men prepare to host No. 22 Arizona Saturday night

Sports

February 27th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger hopes senior guard Keshon Gilbert will return to the lineup on Saturday night when the ninth ranked Cyclones host 22nd ranked Arizona. Gilbert missed the last two games with a muscle strain as ISU dropped road games at Houston and Oklahoma State.

Otzelberger has been preaching consistent effort this week in practice. It is something he felt was lacking in Tuesday night’s upset loss at Oklahoma State.

The Cyclones have struggled when missing key players due to injury or illness.

The Cyclones are tied for fourth in the Big 12 at 11-6 and are 21-7 overall and Otzelberger says there needs to be sense of urgency.

Arizona is currently second in the Big 12 at 13-4 and used a half court shot to force overtime in an 86-75 victory over the Cyclones in their first meeting a month ago.
