March 4th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Des Moines, Iowa —A malfunctioning ventilation system prompted the temporary evacuation of Wells Fargo Arena Monday evening, during halftime of the Class 3A quarterfinal between Estherville Lincoln Central and Cherokee in the Iowa girls state basketball tournament.

At around 7:30 p.m., Monday, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union posted on social media that spectators in the arena were being asked to evacuate the building while officials determined the cause of the alarm.

In a follow-up post a few moments later, the IGHSAU said it was determined that the alarm was triggered by a malfunctioning ventilation system in a concession stand and fans were allowed to return to the arena.

Defense will be a key for Iowa State on Tuesday night when the Cyclones close the home schedule against BYU. It pits a Cougar team that averages 81 points per game against a Cyclone squad that gives up just over 67 points per contest.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger who says good defense begins by limiting transition and easy baskets.

BYU is the top shooting team in the Big 12 and is connecting on 49 percent in conference play.

BYU junior forward Richie Saunders is averaging nearly 18 points in conference play. Both teams are 12-6 and tied for fourth in the Big 12 race.

Iowa State is down a spot to 10th in the latest AP Top 25.

AMES, Iowa – Audi Crooks has been named Co-Big 12 Player of the Week, her third weekly honor of the season, as announced by the league Monday afternoon. The Iowa State sophomore averaged 32.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the final week of conference play.

The Algona native finished the season with back-to-back games shooting 75 percent or better from the floor. She also pulled down 10 rebounds against the Wildcats to tally her 10th double-double of the season and 18th of her career.

Iowa women prepare for a rematch against Wisconsin

Iowa women’s coach Jan Jensen won’t need to dig into her film vault to prepare for Wednesday night’s Big Ten Tournament opener in Indianapolis against Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes beat the Badgers 81-66 Sunday in Iowa City to close the regular season.

Jensen does not really think there is an advantage or disadvantage in playing a team twice in four days.

Jensen finished her first season as Hawkeye coach with a 10-8 Big Ten record and they are 20-9 overall.

The winner advances to play Michigan State in the late game Thursday night.

Iowa State women’s coach Bill Fennelly believes the Cyclones should be in the NCAA Tournament no matter what happens at the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City. The Cyclones finished the regular season 22-10 overall and 12-6 in the Big 12 after Sunday’s win over 14th ranked Kansas State. They are the seventh seed in the conference tournament and open late Thursday afternoon against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Arizona State and Cincinnati.

Fennelly does not believe the Big 12 is getting the credit it deserves.

Hawkeyes Run Rule Cougars

Sports

March 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

CLEBURNE, Texas – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Washington State, 14-3, in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at La Moderna Field.

“Really happy with how our guys came out and played today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We came out focused and locked in.”

Right-hander Reece Beuter started on the mound for the Hawkeyes and earned his second win of the season. He threw six innings, giving up three runs on six hits with four punchouts. Freshman Tyler Guerin made his second appearance of the season and came in to relieve Beuter in the seventh, striking out one batter.

“We gave Reece Beuter some cushion, but he really didn’t need it,” Heller said. “He was outstanding again today. He pounded the strike zone and changed speeds. We kicked it around a time or two and forced him to work out of some self-inflicted jams, but he was able to handle it.”

Iowa totaled 12 hits to Washington State’s six. The Hawkeyes hit .364 with runners on base and .375 with runners in scoring position.

“On a day like today with the wind blowing out at 30 MPH, we knew we were going to have to score runs and score them in multiple innings, and that’s what we did,” Heller said.

Freshman and Cedar Falls native Colin Coonradt made his first collegiate start, going 1-for-1 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

Iowa put up a four-spot in the first inning. Junior Caleb Wulf recorded his seventh RBI of the four-game series with a single through the right side that plated senior Ben Wilmes. Sophomore Reese Moore then smacked a three-run dinger over the left field wall for his second long ball of the season.

The Hawkeye offense stayed hot in the third frame, scoring six runs off of a few free bases and hits from both Moore and junior Gable Mitchell, who went 3-for-5 at the plate.

Iowa put up two more runs in the fourth when fifth-yearAndy Nelson ripped an RBI double to left and junior Kooper Schulte hit an RBI SAC fly to right.

Junior Blake Guerin hit a pinch hit walkoff two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to put the 10-run run rule in effect.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes will head back to Iowa City for their home opener against Loras at Duane Banks Field on Monday at 5 p.m. (CT). Iowa’s previously scheduled home opener versus St. Thomas on Wednesday has been canceled.
