Long Ball Powers Six-Run, Extra-Inning Comeback in Houston

Sports

March 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

HOUSTON, Texas – For the first time since March 25, 2006, Iowa State (10-9, 1-0 Big 12) opened up conference play with a win, defeating Houston (14-7, 0-1 Big 12) in eight innings, 10-8.
The Cyclones, who at one point found themselves down 8-2 in the fifth, rattled off eight unearned runs to rally past the Cougars and earn the opening weekend win. The ISU comeback was powered by the longball, as four Cyclones mashed homers, with Reagan Bartholomew’s mash in the eighth inning serving as the game-winner.
Tonight’s game was Iowa State’s third extra-inning contest of the season and ISU’s first extra-inning win. The Cyclones also put 10 runs on the board for the third-straight game and have now scored in double figures five times on the year.
Freshman phenom Jessie Clemons led the way for the Cyclones, as the rookie went 3-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and a homer, batting in three runs and also drawing a walk. Three other Cyclones (Angelina Allen, Sydney Malott and Bartholomew) notched a pair of RBI, with both Allen and Bartholomew’s RBI coming on homers of their own. Not to be forgotten, Isabelle Nosan had a career night in the seven spot, recording three hits. She, along with Clemons, was tied for the game-high in hits.
Three Cyclones saw the circle on the evening, with freshman Abby Huhn (2-1) getting the win. Lauren Schurman began the game before turning it over to Sami Potvin in the third inning. Huhn took over at the start of the fifth and closed things down, allowing just two hits and striking out a pair.
For Houston, three Cougars notched two hits, with Makenna Mitchell leading the way with three RBI. Mitchell had a pair of homers on the night, as the Cougars as a whole had four.
How it Happened
Iowa State struck first in the top half of the opening inning. Clemons would draw a one-out walk before stealing second to put a runner in scoring position. With a 2-2 count, Malott would crank a double to left field to plate Clemons and make it 1-0 early.
In the bottom of the second, the Cougars would go on to load the bases with just one out. A single back to the pitcher would plate one and put Houston on the board, tying the game.
ISU would strand one in the third before turning to the bottom of the inning. A one-out triple was followed by a Houston homer which would put the Cougars up 3-1.
The Cyclones clawed within one in the top of the fourth, thanks to a Malott shot into left field. Malott, who led off the frame, took a 2-1 ball over the fence to make it 3-2.
Houston exploded in the bottom of the inning though, at one point hitting back-to-back-to-back homers to take an 8-2 lead.
Down six with nine outs left, ISU didn’t panic. Sereniti Trice led off the fifth with a single right back up the middle before Allen clobbered a first pitch ball over the left center fence to make it 8-4, cutting the Houston lead in half.
The Cyclones would pull all the way back even in the sixth, plating a quartet of runs. Back-to-back one-out walks would put a pair on for Clemons. Clemons took a 2-1 pitch for a ride, sending a line-drive ball over the right center field fence bring ISU back within one run, 8-7. Back-to-back Cyclones were then hit by pitched to put two on. Isabelle Nosan would step up to the plate, and with two outs, send an infield single to the shortstop. Malott, who was on second, rounded third and the shortstop didn’t think to check her, as Malott scored and evened the game up.
Each team would go scoreless in the seventh, so on to the eighth the game went. Clemons would open the extra frame with a pure hustle double into the right center gap to put the leadoff runner on. Then, with one out, Bartholomew hammered a ball over the batter’s eye in center field to put the Cyclones up, 10-8.
In the bottom of the frame, Huhn shut things down, forcing a trio of Cougars groundouts to put Houston away.

March 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Iowa State (22-11, 12-6 Big 12) fell to No. 17 Baylor (26-6, 15-3 Big 12) in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship 69-63 Friday evening.
After falling behind by as much as 14, the Cyclones trimmed that deficit down to five to end the first half on a 9-0 run. Iowa State took the lead as late as 4:41 in the fourth quarter, but No. 2-seed Baylor flipped the lead for good to advance.
Audi Crooks was outstanding with 32 points, tying the third-highest total by a Cyclone in the Big 12 Tournament after Addy Brown’s 41 yesterday. Crooks had game No. 65 in a row with double-digit points, breaking the record for the program’s longest streak set by Angie Welle from 2000-02.
Emily Ryan had five assists to bring her total to 78 throughout her tournament career, a Big 12 Championship record. Ryan also had nine points, two assists, a block and a steal while going a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line and making crucial plays to keep the Cyclones in it.

How it Happened
Baylor scored 10 before Crooks got the Cyclones on the board, while Crooks continued to cut into the Bears’ deficit totaling her 11th point to put the score at 22-13. Sydney Harris and Brown netted buckets next, stretching a run of nine to cut down a lead that was once 14 down to five (22-17).
The Bears again hit a run to start the quarter, but a Crooks bucket and a 3 by Harris brought the game back within single digits. After Baylor went ahead 38-24 following costly ISU turnovers, the Cyclones set out to end the half making nine straight in a run that included a Ryan and-1 and ended with a jumper by Ryan to put the score at 38-33.
Iowa State continued chipping away at BU’s lead as the second half began, bringing it back to a four-point game of 44-40 at the media timeout. With three minutes to play in the third, Iowa State hit a run of six featuring four free throws by Ryan to tie the game at 48s. Baylor remained up, but ISU kept it within three as the game was brought to the final quarter with the score at 55-52.
Harris began the fourth with a layup assisted by Joens to make it a one-possession game but the Bears again held onto the lead. That would change with 5:29 remaining and the score standing at 58-56 as Arianna Jackson hit a huge 3-pointer to send the crowd into a frenzy and give Iowa State its first lead. The game remained within a pair until just under three minutes remained, with Baylor extending a run of seven. Baylor held the lead from there as ISU fell 59-63.

Top Performers
Audi Crooks totaled 30-plus points for seventh time this season as it was also her fourth-straight 20-plus point game. Crooks ended the game with 32 points (14-of-18 shooting), six assists and a steal.
