ISU Swept by No. 22 Ole Miss in Rebel Invitational Finale

Sports

March 17th, 2025 by Christian Adams

OXFORD, Miss. – Searching for its first win over a ranked win this season, Iowa State (11-14, 1-2 Big 12) was unable to do so, as it fell to No. 22 Ole Miss (25-4, 2-1 SEC) twice in Sunday’s doubleheader to close the Rebel Invitational.
The Cyclones were unable to get out of their own way in game one, as a pair of errors resulted in four unearned runs for the Rebels, as Ole Miss walked away with a 9-0 run-rule victory in nine innings.
Game two was a much different story for the Cyclones, as ISU overcame a four-run deficit by scoring five unanswered runs to take a one-run lead in the sixth inning. Ole Miss however used its second three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to regain control and pull away with an 8-6 win.
No. 22 Ole Miss 9, Iowa State 0 (6 Inn.)
Walks and errors spelled doom for the Cyclones in the opening game of the Sunday doubleheader, as ISU fell to its second ranked opponent of the season. No. 22 Ole Miss took a 9-0 win in six innings over the Cyclones, collecting nine hits and capitalizing on ISU mistakes – notching four unearned runs.
Just three Cyclones collected hits for ISU, as Angelina Allen, Sydney Malott and Sereniti Trice accounted for the knocks. All three hits were singles though, as the Cyclones were not able to get much going on the basepaths.
Lauren Schurman (4-8) got the start for the Cyclones, going 2.2 innings. A pair of ISU errors helped the Rebels plate six runs against Schurman – two of which were earned. Jaiden Ralston hurled the final 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
How it Happened
ISU got an early baserunner in the first inning, as Trice reached on an infield single but would be stranded as the inning flipped. In the bottom of the frame, an RBI single from the Rebels would plate a run as Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead.
ISU went three up, three down in the second before the Rebels added another run on another RBI single.
Ole Miss would capitalize on an ISU error in the third, plating four runs to extend its lead to 6-0.
The Cyclones collected their second and third hits in the fourth but would strand them both. Neither side would cross the plate in the fourth or the fifth, as Ole Miss took its 6-0 lead into the sixth.
In the sixth, a double and a walk put a pair on for the Rebels before Ailyah Binford walked into the box. Binford then took a 2-2 pitch deep over the left center field fence to end things and forced a run-rule win for Ole Miss.

No. 22 Ole Miss 8, Iowa State 6
A pair of three-run innings by No. 22 Ole Miss overcame a resilient Iowa State effort in game two of the doubleheader, as the Rebels earned a two-run win to close the tournament. ISU, who was down 5-1, battled all the way back as it scored five unanswered to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning.
After giving up four unearned runs and struggling to produce on offense, Iowa State bounced back in the second outing, scoring four runs and seeing a pair of Cyclones – Angelina Allen and Tatum Johnson – notch two hits. Johnson led the team with two RBI, while Sereniti Trice scored a squad-best two runs.
Abby Huhn earned the start for the Cyclones, as she was one of three ISU pitchers to see the circle. Huhn went for two innings, giving up four runs on six hits before being replaced by Jaiden Ralston. Ralston, making her second appearance on the day, hurled just one frame, allowing a run on a pair of hits. Lauren Schurman (4-9) was the pitcher of record, tossing the final three innings and allowing three runs on two hits.

How it Happened
Sereniti Trice was able to reach on an infield error before eventually moving to third on a groundout and a wild pitch. With two outs, Sydney Malott stepped into the box and drove a single to the shortstop, plating Trice and giving the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead.
Ole Miss was held scoreless in the first, but flipped the script in the second, plating two to take a 2-1 lead. A Lexie Brady solo shot and an Ashton Lansdell RBI single accounted for the two runs as the game moved to the third.
In the third inning, Ole Miss piled on three more runs thanks to another Binford homer, a two-run shot, and a Jaden Pone RBI triple.
Iowa State added a second run in the fourth, as Tatum Johnson led off the frame with a double into left center field. Hayleigh Oliver would enter to pinch run for Johnson and move over to third on a Paige Nakashima groundout. With Oliver on third, Tiana Poole grounded out to the second baseman, but it was deep enough for there not to be a play at the plate as Oliver came across and made it 5-2 in favor of Ole Miss.
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth for Ole Miss, the Cyclone offense came alive in the fifth, scoring three runs and tying things up at five-all. McKenna Andrews led the inning off with a single and later, Trice would draw a walk to put two on with one out. Angelina Allen plopped a single into center, scoring Andrews and putting both Trice and Allen on third and second (Allen advanced on the throw). With two outs and a 2-2 count, Tatum Johnson dug deep and found a perfect spot for a bloop single to score both Allen and Trice and tie things up.
Ole Miss was again held scoreless in the fifth, and in the sixth, ISU retook the lead as it scored its fifth-straight unanswered run. Tiana Poole led off the sixth with a double down the right field line and was then pinch ran for by Ireland Buss. Karlee Ford then laid down an excellent sac bunt and moved Buss to third. With one out, Andrews sent a shallow sac fly to left field, just deep enough for Buss to tag up and go home to give ISU a 6-5 lead.
The Rebels struck back emphatically in the bottom of the sixth, putting three on the board to retake the lead. Ole Miss would strike out three Cyclones in the seventh as ISU left two stranded and fell just short of a ranked, road win.

Iowa State guard Keshon Gilbert to miss NCAA Tournament

Sports

March 17th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger says guard Keshon Gilbert will miss the NCAA Tournament due to a muscle strain. Gilbert did not play in Thursday’s loss to 17th ranked BYU at the Big 12 Tournament. Junior guard Tamin Lipsey also missed that game due to a groin injury.

Otzelberger expects Lipsey will play Friday when the Cyclones open the NCAA Tournament against Lipscomb in Milwaukee.

Otzelberger believes the Cyclones will be focused even without Gilbert in the lineup.

Iowa State is the third seed in the East Region. Lipscomb is the 14th seed after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

Tip time has been set for 12:30 on Friday.

Drake to play Missouri in the NCAA Tournament

Sports

March 17th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Drake will play Missouri in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday in Wichita. The Bulldogs are the 11th seed in the West Region and will play a sixth seeded Tiger squad that is one of 14 S-E-C teams in the field. Drake is 30-3 under first year coach Ben McCollum and won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles.

The Bulldogs and the fans in attendance at the watch party had to wait deep into the NCAA selection show to see where they are headed.

McCollum was asked how long it will take to put a scouting report together on Missouri.

Drake is already considered a trendy upset pick but McCollum has told his team all season not to “drink the poison.”

McCollum on the match-up against Mizzou.

McCollum says he remains focused on this team even though his name has been connected to openings at Iowa, Indiana and Virginia.

Junior guard Bennett Stirtz is the Missouri Valley Conference Player-of-the-Year and was one of four players to follow McCollum from Northwest Missouri State to Drake.

Stirtz says he will have a lot of family and friends in Wichita.

Stirtz on seeing Drake’s name on the selection show and hearing his name being talked about.

Forward Daniel Abreau also started his career at Northwest Missouri State but unlike Stirtz did not grow up watching the selection show.

Abreau says he is not a junkie when it comes to basketball on television.

Abreau says at this point any opponent will be a challenge.

Tip time is 6:35 on Thursday.

ISU Splits Opening Day of Rebel Invitational

Sports

March 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

OXFORD, Miss. – Iowa State kicked off its final non-conference tournament of the weekend Friday afternoon in its first two games of the Rebel Invitational. The Cyclones (11-12, 1-2 Big 12) started the day with a one-run win over Samford (18-11, 0-0 SoCon), defeating the Bulldogs 5-4. ISU then fell to North Dakota State (13-15, 0-0 Summit) in the second contest, 8-6, in nine innings.
In game one, McKenna Andrews recorded a career-best four RBI as she helped the Cyclones down the Bulldogs. Game two featured the longest game of the season (innings-wise) for the Cyclones, as they fell to the Bison after committing four errors and leaving 12 on base.
Iowa State 5, Samford 4
Iowa State opened up the 2025 Rebel Invitational with a win, downing the Samford Bulldogs by a score of 5-4. After falling into an early one-run hole, Iowa State used a four-run fourth and a career day at the plate from McKenna Andrews to earn its eleventh win of the season.
As mentioned, Andrews had an outstanding day for the Cyclones. She recorded a career-high four RBI on two hits – one of which was her first career homer. Tatum Johnson had the team’s remaining RBI, as she had a home run of her own. Sereniti Trice, Sydney Malott, Johnson and Andrews all finished with two hits.
Abby Huhn made her fourth start of the season for the Cyclones, pitching three innings of action where she allowed two runs on two hits. Jaiden Ralston (3-4) relieved Huhn, giving up two runs in 1.1 innings of work. Lauren Schurman (1) closed things out for ISU, allowing just one hit in the final 2.2 innings.
How it Happened
ISU stranded a pair in each of the first two frames, as the game sat scoreless until the third. The Bulldogs would break the stalemate, placing one on the board as they used three singles to score the first run.
Down 1-0, ISU took off in the fourth, plating four runs. Tatum Johnson led off the frame with an eight-pitch at-bat that ended in her third homer of the season – a towering shot to right center field. An Ashley Minor single and Maddie Knowles walk later, and the Cyclones had two on with no outs. Andrews would step into the box and launch her first career home run over the left field fence to plate both and give ISU a 4-1 lead.
Samford got back within one in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff double was followed by a single to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Joi Hubbard doubled into left center to plate both and make it 4-3.
The Cyclones extended their lead to two in the top of the fifth, again thanks to the bat of McKenna Andrews. With runners on second and third with two outs, the junior singled to third base, scoring one to make it 5-3.
Samford led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo blast to make it 5-4, but that was as close as the Bulldogs got, as Lauren Schurman would enter and close things out for the Cyclones, earning her first career save.

Miller and Dinnebier Surpass Personal Milestones in MVC Tournament Quarterfinal Win Over Redbirds

Sports

March 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Drake started strong, finished even stronger, and took another step in its bid to win a third consecutive championship in the Credit Union 1 Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Katie Dinnebier scored 22 points, Anna Miller scored all her 21 in the second half and the fourth-seeded Bulldogs overcame some costly turnovers to beat No. 5 seed Illinois State 75-69 in a quarterfinal game full of big shots and momentum swings at the Ford Center on Friday.

“I’m so pleased with our maturity down the stretch,” said Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Allison Pohlman. “To finish this one out against a very good Illinois State team is a testament to our attitude. [We] got a number of contributions but had an amazing defensive effort getting consecutive stops in the fourth quarter. We’re happy March madness is giving us another day here in Evansville.”

Drake (22-10) led by 11 in the first half, trailed by five with less than 4 minutes to play, then scored 13 of the game’s last 15 points to earn a spot in the semifinals against top-seeded Murray State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs and Racers split their regular-season games, each winning on the other’s floor.

Illinois State (21-12) got a career-high 30 points from sophomore Shannon Dowell but could not hold off Drake’s surge at the end, which started with Dinnebier banking in a long 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer to cut the lead to 67-65.

Miller followed with six straight points, including her career-best fourth 3-pointer of the game, and the Bulldogs wrapped it up with two free throws from Courtney Becker and two more from Dinnebier, the league’s Jackie Stiles Player of the Year. Illinois State managed only two free throws after Addison Martin’s jump shot gave the Redbirds a 67-62 lead with 3:32 left.

Miller’s hook shot at the buzzer lifted Drake past Missouri State in last year’s championship game. This time, the 6-foot-3 senior hit the big shots from the perimeter, going 4-for-5 from deep and grabbing 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.

Becker added 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting and Shannon Fornshell delivered seven points and nine rebounds, for the Bulldogs, who turned it over 16 times, leading to a 17-0 edge in points off turnovers for Illinois State. Drake overcame that by hitting 13 3-pointers – the 17th time this season the Bulldogs made at least 10 – and a 43-27 rebounding advantage.

Dowell, who scored 23 in a first-round victory over Southern Illinois, gave the Bulldogs fits by driving past defenders to the basket and then making the shot, getting fouled or both. She finished 10-of-21 from the field and sank 10 of 11 free throws after going 11-for-11 at the line on Thursday. Martin finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Maya Wong hit three 3-pointers and scored 10 points.

Dinnebier became the seventh player in Drake history and 12th in the MVC to score 2,000 points, running her total 2,108. With four assists Friday she hiked her total to 770, which moves to No. 2 on Drake’s career list.

Miller is now the sixth player in Drake history and fifth in the Valley with 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds. Her totals now stand at 1,512 and 1,008.

Drake made four of its first five shots in jumping to a 10-3 lead and used a 14-2 run that included four 3-pointers to go up 30-19. Illinois State then finished the first half with a 12-3 run to trail 33-31 at the break.

Nine straight Redbird points lifted them into a 42-39 lead in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs answered again, getting 3-pointers from Miller and Abbie Aalsma and two free throws from Dinnebier to go up 52-48.

Illinois State regained the momentum and was leading 65-62 when Dinnebier’s layup spun out. Seconds later, Martin knocked down her shot that put the Redbirds up by five and Drake’s hopes seemed to fade. Then Dinnebier connected on the hurried 3 to beat the shot clock and it provided the spark the Bulldogs needed to finish it off.

Hawkeyes Split Doubleheader

Sports

March 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team split a doubleheader with Michigan State on Friday at Duane Banks Field. The Spartans won the first game, 12-8, in 11 innings before the Hawkeyes won 7-3 in the nightcap.

“We just got beat in game one,” said Rick Heller. “They had 18 hits. We fought hard. That’s one where you fight back like you did, and you get an incredible pinch hit home run to tie it. You have to find a way to win that game.”

On a rare day where the wind was blowing out at Banks the Hawkeyes and Spartans combined for eight home runs in game one and 10 home runs on the day.

Cade Obermuller got the start for Iowa in game one throwing 5 2/3 innings allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out six. Daniel Wright allowed three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Sam Hart threw two scoreless innings, and Anthony Watts threw the final two innings and allowed four runs as he was tagged with the loss.

Daniel Rogers was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs and Reese Moore also tallied three RBIs and a home run with a 2-for-4 performance. Blake Guerin also added a home run for the Hawkeyes.

In game two, Aaron Savary notched a quality start improving to 4-0 on the mound throwing 7 1/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. Chas Wheatley threw 1/3 of an inning and Ben DeTaeye closed out the game throwing 1 1/3 allowing one hit as he earned the save.

Ben Wilmes and Jackson Beaman were both 2-for-4. Jaixen Frost hit the first home run of his career, a 447-foot three run blast. Gabe Mitchell, Miles Risley and Daniel Rogers each plated a run.

“I think all of us were wondering what was going to happen in game two,” said Heller. “With a quick turn around when a team gets a win like that on the road a lot of times, they just keep it rolling. That is why it was so important that Savary came out just absolutely delt. We probably left him in a hit or two too long but he pitched fantastic.”

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes and Spartans will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT. Reece Beuter will start for the Hawkeyes and the game will be streamed on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
