Drake begins search for a new basketball coach

Sports

March 24th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

For the second time in a year a search for a new men’s basketball is underway at Drake. After leading the Bulldogs to a school record 31 wins and their deepest run in the NCAA Tournament in 54 years Ben McCollum was named the new coach at Iowa. He was the third different coach in eight years for a program that has enjoyed seven straight seasons of 20 wins or more and three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.

That’s Drake athletic director Brian Hardin who says he was disappointed McCollum was not at Drake for more than one season.

With Niko Medved taking the job at Minnesota, Drake’s last three coaches are now working in the Big Ten.

Hardin was impressed with the way McCollum handled the contact he was receiving from other schools and says he remained focused on his Drake team throughout the process.

Hardin also lauded Iowa AD Beth Goetz for how she handled the search.

Hardin says contact with Iowa began when they returned from the NCAA Tournament late Sunday morning and McCollum informed him on Monday morning that he was taking the Iowa job.

Four Individuals Qualify for Utah Regional

Sports

March 24th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – After falling just short of qualifying for NCAA Regionals as a team, four Cyclones were announced as earning individual bids to the Utah Regional, held April 3 in Salt Lake City.
On Monday, Frederique Sgarbossa (UB), Haylee Hardin (FX), Noelle Adams (FX) and Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa (AA) were all announced as qualifiers for the Utah Regional, where they will compete as individual gymnasts.
The top 12 all-arounders and the top 16 individual event specialists on each event, who are not on a top 28 qualifying team, make it to regionals. All four will compete following one of the four teams in the regional in the day’s first session.
For Bergstrom-Te Slaa, this will be her third time in four years competing in the postseason, while Adams will be competing for the second straight year. Both freshmen, Hardin and Sgarbossa, will be making their postseason debut.
On bars, Sgarbossa is tied for 96th nationally with an NQS of 9.860. She averages a 9.796 on bars and her season high was a 9.900. Sgarbossa will compete on bars in the second rotation, following Minnesota’s bars team.
Both Hardin and Adams qualified on floor for the Cyclones, as each has an NQS of 9.860 or higher. Hardin is tied for 56th on floor nationally, boasting a 9.895 NQS and averages a score of 9.877. Adams, meanwhile, is tied for 110 and has an NQS of 9.865. She averages 9.827 points per floor routine and had a season-high of 9.9. Adams will compete on floor in the first rotation following UCLA. Hardin will compete in the fourth rotation, following Minnesota’s floor exercise.
In her first year competing all-around for ISU, Bergstrom-Te Slaa qualified as an all-around competitor. This achievement is especially impressive for Josie, as she hadn’t competed on bars or floor prior to this season. Bergstrom-Te Slaa is 59th nationally as an all-around competitor with an NQS of 39.080. Bergstrom-Te Slaa will follow Southern Utah throughout the first session, beginning on bars and finishing on vault.
For ISU, it’s the most individual postseason qualifiers it has had since seven individual event specialists qualified for the 2016 regional in Minneapolis.

March 24th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team recorded its third Big Ten series win by virtue of a 12-5 win over Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

Iowa (13-8, 6-2) plated double-digit runs for the second straight game and third time in four games. Iowa tallied nine hits, worked 13 walks and had two hit-by-pitches on Saturday. After driving in three runs in the series opener, Reese Moore had four RBI on Saturday.

Aaron SavoryAnthony Watts, Brant Hogue and Jack Whitlock combined to strike out 14 Buckeyes on the mound. Watts earned the win, throwing two and two thirds of scoreless baseball and allowing only one hit and striking out four in middle relief.

“We were pleased with our approach and execution of the game plan,” said Iowa head coach Rick Heller. “You couldn’t ask for more than the five runs in the first inning. We took advantage of the free bases that they gave us today. Savary wasn’t as sharp as he’s been, but he gutted it out for us and kept us in the game. Watts and Hogue did the same thing. Jack did exactly what you want in the ninth, shutting the door 1-2-3.”

Iowa chased Buckeye starter Blaine Wynk after sending 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits and four walks. The highlight of the frame was Reese Moore hitting a towering two-run shot over the right field wall for his second homer in as many days and seventh of the season.

March 23rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Griswold Girls Track & Field program have 23 athletes on this year’s roster including six seniors. A bigger team than years past gives the Tigers the opportunity to field almost every relay and field event this season.

Coming off a seventh place finish at the Northwest Missouri State Indoor Meet Saturday, Griswold scored eight points in the meet. Senior Addison Adams set a personal best in the 400 meter dash and the 60 meter hurdles that included seventh and sixth place finishes. The Tigers entered two different teams into the 1600 meter sprint medley relay that finished seventh and eighth place. The trip to Maryville was the third of 15 meets on the schedule including four home meets.

Griswold hosts the Corner Conference meet on May 6th and Head Coach Rachel Larsen knows the competition is stiff but her team is ready to be challenged.

A bigger roster means spots at meets will be a lot more competitive within the team.
