Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Maria Arboleda and Lizzy Korczak earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in their careers, the league announced on Wednesday. Arboleda was named freshman of the week, while Korczak picked up field athlete of the week honors.

Arboleda, a freshman from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, claimed her second win of the outdoor season at the Texas Relays, clearing 1.83 meters in the high jump. Her performance was the best of the weekend nationally, as she continues to lead both the NCAA and Big Ten in her first season as a Hawkeye.

Korczak, the native of Hassocks, England, won the women’s javelin at the Texas Relays, marking her second victory of the outdoor season. She took first place with a throw of 57.69 meters in Austin. Currently, Korczak leads the Big Ten in the javelin and ranks fourth in the NCAA. She becomes Iowa’s first woman field athlete of the week since Kat Moody claimed the honor on March 27, 2024.

Arboleda and Korczak each hold Iowa’s school records in their respective events.

It is the third time Iowa has earned a weekly conference award this outdoor season. Bryce Ruland was the men’s freshman of the week on March 26.

April 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

TAMPA, Florida – University of Iowa first-year head coach Jan Jensen is the 2025 Spalding® Maggie Dixon NCAA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
The award honors a WBCA member NCAA Division I head coach who has led their team to a successful season during their first year on the sideline. It is named in honor of the late Maggie Dixon, who in her inaugural season as the Army head coach, led the Black Knights to the 2006 Patriot League title and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship tournament. Dixon, 29, died of an undiagnosed heart condition just weeks after on April 6, 2006.
“Success in your first year as an NCAA Division I head coach is generally a difficult feat. When a new Division I head coach demonstrates a mastery of managing all aspects of a program, as well as producing success in competition, our coaching family pays respectful attention. The WBCA is proud to announce Jan Jensen as the winner of the 2025 Spalding® Maggie Dixon NCAA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award,” said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. “Jan led Iowa to a remarkable season. We celebrate her effort and effectiveness on the basketball court as a teacher and equally applaud the extensive role she plays in impacting the lives of her student-athletes.”
“Spalding is honored to recognize Jan Jensen as the 2025 Spalding Maggie Dixon NCAA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year, together with the WBCA” said Brian Collins, Spalding VP. “This award is a symbol of inspirational leadership and the positive influence sports can have on individuals, teams, and communities, which Jan has embodied in her first season. We want to congratulate Jan on the commitment to excellence shown at the University of Iowa and look forward to watching her continued impact on student-athletes on and off the court.” The first Spalding® Maggie Dixon NCAA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award was presented in 2007, the year following Dixon’s death. Sports

April 2nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Riverside Girls Golf team is excited about the balance and depth they believe they have f0r the upcoming golf season. The Bulldogs bring back four players who all compete with one another. Sophomore Kaycie Perkins was the only Bulldog of the four to crack 50 in her first meet as a high school golfer.

Riverside loses their top golfer from a season ago in Addison Brink who went on to play at Simpson College, but Head Coach Mitch Rice says he’s confident those shoes can be filled.

The Bulldogs begin their season Tuesday, April 8th in a dual with IKM-Manning in Oakland followed by another competition with Missouri Valley three days later. Riverside will get the chance to compete four times throughout the season at Oakland Country Club. Throughout the course of the season, Rice wants improvement with postseason admirations.

The goals for the 2025 Riverside Bulldogs are more than an opportunity at the State Tournament but to leave a mark on the program’s history.

Hawkeyes Run Rule Braves

Sports

April 2nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

PEORIA, Illinois — The University of Iowa baseball team bested Bradley, 13-3, in seven innings on Tuesday night at Dozer Park.

The Hawkeyes mustered eight hits and walked 14 times.

“It was a strange game tonight, really,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We were able to take advantage of a lot of Bradley free bases.”

The Hawkeyes plated five in the first off of seven walks and an error. They didn’t score again until the fifth frame when junior Gable Mitchell hit a 2 RBI single and transfer Miles Risley slapped a 2 RBI double.

“In the fifth we broke through with some clutch hits,” said Heller. “Gable Mitchell had a big two-out hit that gave us some breathing room, and Risley followed two batters later.”

Iowa scored its final three runs in the seventh inning when grad transfer Daniel Rogers hit an RBI triple, his first of the season, and junior Kooper Schulte smacked a two-run dinger.

Risley was the lone Hawkeye with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Freshman Jaixen Frost walked in two runs and scored twice. Junior Caleb Wulf and redshirt sophomore Reese Moore each scored two runs. Senior Ben Wilmes recorded an RBI walk.

Freshman Jaron Bleeker started on the mound for the second time in his career and was credited with the win. He gave up one run, walked a batter and struck out a batter. Six other pitchers saw the mound for Iowa, each throwing an inning. The pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts and seven walks and didn’t give up a run after the fourth inning. The Hawkeyes held the Braves to three hits.

“On the mound we were definitely better than we were last Tuesday, which was a good sign,” said Heller. “A few too many free bases, but it wasn’t a great night to play. To get out of here with a 10-run rule win — we’ll take it.”

Up Next

The Hawkeyes travel to Northwestern for a three-game series starting on Friday at 3 p.m. (CDT). The game will be available on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
