Drake Relays director Blake Boldon on high school qualifying

Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Drake Relays director Blake Boldon says nice weather plays a part but coaching is the biggest reason the marks have been high early in the track season for Iowa high schools. as of Wednesday, nearly 90 competitors across the state had already reached the Blue Standard, the mark needed to compete in this month’s Drake Relays.

Boldon says the “Blue Standard” was established a couple of years ago to let athletes know what it will take to automatically qualify for Drake in their event.

Boldon says the final day to attempt to qualify for the Drake Relays will be April 17th.

Iowa DE Max Llewellyn on spring drills

Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

With several key players gone from Iowa’s defensive line Max Llewellyn will be counted on for an even bigger role next season. The senior defensive end from Urbandale was third in sacks for a team that finished with a record of 8-5.

Llewellyn has shown the ability to make the big play. It was his strip sack and fumble recovery that led to a game winning field goal against Nebraska last season.

The Hawkeyes close spring drills on April 26th with an open practice in Kinnick Stadium.

Dream come true for Iowa high school baseball team to play at Wrigley Field

Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Members of the Oskaloosa High School baseball team will be playing under the lights at Chicago’s Wrigley Field next month as part of an extra special road trip. Assistant coach and volunteer Nathan Johnson says the team and their families will be in the stands to watch an afternoon Chicago Cubs game versus the San Francisco Giants, and afterwards, the team from southeast Iowa will take the field for a nighttime inter-squad scrimmage.

With two sons on the team, Johnson says being able to play in one of the oldest and most distinctive stadiums in Major League Baseball promises to be an exceptional treat for the teens.

High school teams from Oskaloosa and Ottumwa got the opportunity to play at Busch Stadium in Saint Louis last year, which Johnson says was a rare honor, but he notes, Chicago will be next-level different.

Wrigley opened in 1914, making it the second-oldest active M-L-B ballpark behind only Fenway Park in Boston. The trip is scheduled for May 7th and is thanks to Oskaloosa-based Musco Lighting. Musco has a long-standing relationship with the Cubs and Wrigley Field. The company installed new field lighting at the stadium three years ago and has since worked on additional projects, including lighting for the exterior and tower areas.

Iowa State QB coach Jake Waters on freshman Alex Manske

Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Waters says the key right now for Manske is learning the offense.

Iowa baseball takes share of B1G lead to Northwestern beginning Friday

Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller says the Hawkeyes have accepted their identity and it is one of the reasons they take a share of the Big Ten lead to Northwestern for Friday’s start of a three game series. The Hawkeyes are the top hitting and pitching team in the Big Ten and are tied at the top of the league standings with UCLA at 10-2.

Heller says the Hawkeye offense has managed to succeed in all types of weather conditions. The lead the Big Ten with a .327 averaged and are also tied for the lead in home runs with 25.

With only two starters back from last year’s team Heller says a key has been how quickly the new players have bought in to their system of hitting.

Northwestern enters the series with a 5-4 record in Big Ten play.

Atlantic Boys Golf Returns Nearly Entire Roster for 2025 Season

Sports

April 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Boys Golf team returns nearly everyone from a season ago for the 2025 campaign. The Trojans graduated just one senior last year and brought in six freshmen to the program as well. Atlantic fields an 18-man roster this Spring and has had the opportunity to get outdoors as much as possible and boost team chemistry says Head Coach Kendra Henningsen.

The Trojans have multiple players who have the potential to shine at any given tournament this year. Senior Tristan Hayes has been a letterwinner the last couple years for Atlantic is really excited for his senior year Henningsen said. Junior Hudson McLaren qualified for the state tournament as a sophomore last year and had the lowest nine-hole score of any golfer on the roster with a 34.

The Trojans kick off their season Tuesday, April 8th in Atlantic in a triangular against Keumper Catholic and Hamburg, that will be the first of four meets on their home course. The home slate includes the Atlantic Invite on May 6th, as the Trojans welcome 13 other programs onto their course.

Henningsen says the first part of the schedule looks a little different this year.

This year’s team has set goals and one of them is to be better than the rest.

It’s not just about redemption from a year ago but proving Atlantic can compete with anyone.
