Hawkeyes Fall to Wildcats in Series Finale

Sports

April 7th, 2025 by Christian Adams

EVANSTON, Illinois – The University of Iowa baseball team snapped its 10-game Big Ten winning streak with a 5-4 loss to Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Rocky and Bernice Miller Park.
The Hawkeyes (20-10, 12-3) had 13 hits to the Wildcats’ eight but left 12 runners on base.
“Tough loss today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We had 13 hits, and when you have 13 hits, you have to score more than four runs. We had opportunities and didn’t get the hit.”
Reece Beuter started on the mound for Iowa and gave up three runs on four hits in two innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out three. Five other pitchers saw the mound on Sunday, including Ben DeTaeye, who was dinged with the loss. The pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and six walks.
“We didn’t get the start we wanted out of Beuter and had to go to the pen earlier than we would’ve liked,” Heller said. “Up until the end, those guys did a pretty good job.”
Northwestern (14-15, 6-6) scored three in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the series. Iowa got one back in the fourth after Jackson Beaman doubled and Kooper Schulte hit an RBI groundout.
The Hawkeyes knotted the game at three in the sixth inning. Schulte hit a double and advanced to third on the throw to score Beaman, who hustled from first to home. Ben Wilmes followed with an RBI single.
Northwestern took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a solo shot to right field. The Hawkeyes never quit, as Blake Guerin smoked an RBI double to score Miles Risley with two outs in the ninth
The Wildcats then hit a two-out bases loaded walkoff single in the bottom of the frame to squeeze out the win.
Risley and Guerin led the Iowa offense with three hits each. Wilmes, Beaman and Schulte were the other Hawkeyes with multi-hit games with two each.
“You give up two free bases in the bottom of the ninth, you’re setting yourself up to lose. Unfortunately, that’s what happened today,” said Heller. “You just have to tip your hat and move on.”
UP NEXT
Iowa will be back at Duane Banks Field for a midweek matchup with UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday at 4:02 p.m. (CT). The game will be streamed on B1G+ and can be heard on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

The Huskers posted 3-6 records in the Big Ten in his first two seasons as head coach.

Iowa State’s Jontez Williams assumes leadership role

Sports

April 6th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State corner Jontez Williams says last season has provided momentum for the program but it has also raised the expectations. The Cyclones are coming off an 11-3 season that included a Pop Tarts Bowl victory over Miami.

Williams is expected to step up as a leader this spring. He was a second team All Big 12 choice last season and is ISU’s most experienced corner.

Williams led the Cyclones with four interceptions last season but says there are areas he hopes to improve in for next season.

Corner’s coach Hank Poteat says William’s leadership is important heading into next season.

Poteat says the corner position needs to build depth

Bookin-Nosbisch Resets Program Record in Florida

Sports

April 6th, 2025 by Christian Adams

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Iowa senior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch posted a program record in the 800 meters on Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Bookin-Nosbisch clocked a 2:02.92, securing a personal best and school record.

“We had another great day at the Florida Relays today with an exceptional race by Alli Bookin-Nosbisch to break her school record and run 2:02.92,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Chioma ran a fantastic 400 today to go 51.44 and post the fastest 400 at Iowa in a very long time. She’s on the verge of breaking the school record as a freshman.  Damaris and Alivia also ran very well today. I thought the men’s 400 meter group took a big step forward today as well and we have two guys very close to running 45.”

“The 4×4 relays didn’t quite go according to expectations unfortunately as we had some mishaps at the exchange for both teams. I think we can run 3:00 and 3:28 for the men and women very soon, but we just need to have a clean race.”

“Overall, I was very pleased with the weekend from both Stanford and the Florida Relays. We had a lot of personal-bests and all-time top 10 performances. I’m excited for most of the team to have this next weekend off to recover and train.”

In the 800 meters, Bookin-Nosbisch finished fourth and set a new program record with a time of 2:02.92. She previously held the record at 2:03.24, which she set last season at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Junior Gabby Cortez also achieved a personal best, clocking in at 2:06.46, which earned her the eighth spot on the all-time list. On the men’s side, junior Ryan Schreiner finished in 1:48.16, marking both a personal best and an all-time top-ten performance. Schreiner now ranks 10th in Iowa’s history.

Freshmen Chioma Nwachukwu, Damaris Mutunga, and Alivia Williams dominated the women’s 400 meters, making three updates to the Iowa all-time list. Nwachukwu secured second place with a time of 51.44, ranking third all-time at Iowa. Mutunga finished at 52.54, earning her the sixth spot on the all-time list, while Williams crossed the line in 53.19, ranking ninth.

In the men’s 400 meters, senior Zidane Brown finished in ninth place with a time of 46.01, which ranks 10th all-time at Iowa.

The 4×400-meter relay team of Olicia Lucas, Williams, Nwachukwu and Mutunga cruised up the all-time list with a 3:31.55 finish, elevating them to second all-time at Iowa.

At the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, three Hawkeyes recorded personal-best times in the 800 meters. Junior Jalyssa Blazek finished in 2:12.93, a lifetime best. A pair of sophomores, Cameron Kalaway (2:13.50) and Clare Kelly (2:15.48), also finished with personal bests. The trio picked up five combined personal bests this weekend.

As a team, the Hawkeyes set 14 personal bests and made 10 updates to the all-time list this weekend during their roadtrip.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team fell to No. 20/21 Nebraska, 14-1, on Saturday afternoon at Bob Pearl Field.

Freshman Talia Tretton (6-6) got the start in the circle for Iowa. Nebraska was first on the board after an inside the park home run in the top of the first. Sophomore Jena Young walked to start the home half of the inning and got to third with two outs. Redshirt junior Desiree Rivera singled up the middle scoring Young to tie the game at one.

The Cornhuskers started pouring on the runs in the second inning with a solo home run and a two-run home run, making it 4-1. Nebraska continued to capitalize in the third inning with a three-run home run, pushing the lead further, 7-1. The Cornhuskers continued with the long ball in the fourth inning with another solo home run and a two-run home run, 10-1. Nebraska secured its run-rule win in the fifth inning with another four runs after an RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and a two-RBI double.

Iowa managed to get baserunners on with five walks and a hit batter but was unable to string things together. Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry registered the Hawkeyes second hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth but that was it for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes used three pitchers in the game. Tretton went three and 1/3 innings, sophomore Jaylee Ojo completed one, and senior Haley Downe closed the game with 2/3 of an inning.

Iowa finished the game with one run on two hits and one error. Nebraska had 14 runs on 12 hits and no errors.

ISU Women’s Basketball Signs Transfer Jada Williams

Sports

April 6th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women’s basketball head coach Bill Fennelly has announced the signing of transfer Jada Williams to the 2025-26 roster. Williams comes to Ames following two seasons at Arizona.

“We are so excited to add Jada to the Cyclone women’s basketball family,” said Fennelly. “Jada’s passion for the game, combined with an outstanding skill set fits our team perfectly. Our goal in the portal was to add a special player and person at the guard spot, and we feel we did exactly that in Jada.”

Jada Williams | 5-8 | Guard | Kansas City, Missouri
Williams started in 30 contests for Arizona in 2024-25, leading the Wildcats in scoring with 12.7 points per game and increasing to 13.4 points per game in conference contests. She totaled 23 double digit scoring performances on the season with three 20-plus point games as a sophomore. As a rookie, the Williams dropped a career-high 23 points on then-No. 3 Stanford, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats to a marquee Pac-12 victory.

The Kansas City native is a 2023 McDonald’s All-American, joining classmate and fellow Cyclone Addy Brown to help West defeat East, 110-102. She was also named a SLAM All-American and a member of the inaugural Nike Hoops Summit team the same year. Williams has represented the United States and won gold medals at the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2021 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

Cyclones Drop Series Finale to BYU

Sports

April 6th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (17-17, 7-5 Big 12) was unable to secure its third consecutive conference series win on Saturday, as it fell to BYU (23-10, 7-5 Big 12) in the series finale, 13-0 in five innings.
The Cougars plated three in the first frame, but an explosive nine-run fifth inning was the difference on the day as BYU ran away with a 13-run win.
ISU was limited to just two hits on the day, as Ashley Minor and Reagan Bartholomew were the only ones to collect base knocks for the Cyclones. Karlee Ford, Angelina Allen and Paige Zender all drew walks on the day, while Tatum Johnson was hit by a pitch and Jessie Clemons reached on an error.
Four Cyclones saw the circle on the day, with starter Abby Huhn (3-3) taking the loss. Jaiden Ralston threw the majority of the game, tossing four frames and allowing three runs on five hits. Sami Potvin and Lauren Schurman also saw time for the Cyclones.
Four Cougars notched multiple hits, with catcher Lindy Milkowski leading the way with a game-high of three. Milkowski, along with freshman phenom Ilove’a Brittingham, had two homers on the day as the two made up for all four BYU home runs. Brittinghman had a game-best five RBI – all via the long ball.
Kate Dahle would go the distance for the Cougs, limiting the Cyclones to just a pair of hits. Dahle would walk three but also struck out three as she earned a complete game shutout.
How it Happened
The Cougars wasted little time on Saturday’s finale getting the scoring started. A one-out walk was immediately driven in by a Brittingham homer to make it 2-0. A double from Milkowski was then followed by a Kamoku single, pushing the BYU advantage to three through one.
BYU added a fourth run in the third, belting its second homer of the game, this one courtesy of Milkowski, to make it 4-0.
The Cyclones were held in check at the plate, while BYU exploded in the fifth, scoring nine more runs to push the lead to 13 before going on to win in five innings.
