Iowa State DE Ike Ezeogu on spring drills

Sports

April 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State defensive end Ike Ezeogu is looking to step up his game this spring. The native of Missouri played in an 14 games last season and made one start.

Exeogu says there is a new focus on defense after the Cyclones slipped to ninth in total defense in the Big 12 last season and 15th against the run.

Ezeogu had one sack last season and hopes to boost that number in the fall.

Ezeogu says a big focus this spring on the defensive line is building depth.

Cyclone defensive line coach Eli Rasheed feels building depth is a must.

Rasheed says it will take a lot of work to get there.

DALLAS, Texas – Senior Paula Miranda fired a season-best three-under par 69 to pace the University of Iowa women’s golf team during the final round of the Veritex Bank Challenge on Tuesday at the Trinity Forest Golf Club.

Miranda moved up 16 spots to finish in a tie for 11th place with a three-over par 219 (77-73-69).  After opening the day with a bogey, Miranda had four birdies and six pars over her next 10 holes.  She closed out the day with a birdie on the par-four seventh to get to three under.

The 69 matched a Hawkeye team season low and it was Miranda’s eighth round at or below par this season and her first round in the 60s.  She now has five top 20 finishes on the year, which is tied with Ximena Benites for the team high.

Junior Riley Lewis matched her best round of the tournament, finishing Tuesday’s action with a one-over par 73.  She finished in a tie for 24th with a 54-hole total of 223 (73-77-73), matching her best score of the season.

Benites and sophomore Maura Peters both tied for 29th place with 224s.  Benites shot a final round 78, while Peters carded a three-over 75.

The Hawkeyes finished eighth (of 14 teams) in the team standings, finishing with a 54-hole total of 890 (296-299-296).

Houston used a four-under par 284 to surge past Texas Tech to win the team title.  The Cougars finished with a five-over par 869 for the tournament.  Houston’s Moa Svedenskiold won the medalist honor, finishing with a six-under par 210.

Hawkeyes Fall to Redbirds in Extras

Sports

April 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team fell to Illinois State, 2-1, in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Pearl Field.

Junior Jalen Adams (16-5) picked up her 20th start of the season and went 7.1 innings allowing no runs on four hits and struck out five. Freshman Talia Tretton closed out the game for Iowa with 2.2 innings of work allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and struck out two Redbird hitters. Iowa was held to four hits in the game. Senior Tatianna Roman went 1-for-3 at the plate picking up the lone RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Adams started the game strong retiring Illinois State in order in the opening frame. The Hawkeyes had their first two batters reach on singles in the home half of the inning, but were unable to cash in early.

Offense was at a premium for the next six innings, as the game turned into a pitchers duel. Adams worked around baserunners in a few innings, but was able to keep the Redbirds off of the board. Iowa had a baserunner in the fourth and fifth innings but was unable to string anything together.

Both teams went three up, three down in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. Junior Avery Jackson let off the eighth with a single and got into scoring position with one out. Iowa had runners on second and third with two outs, but the Redbirds got out of the jam to keep the game alive. Both teams were once again retired in order in the ninth inning.

In the 10th, the international tie breaker rule went into effect placing a runner at second base to start the inning. Illinois State got on the board with a pair of RBI singles to take the lead, 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, junior Echo Mattiello started on second base. Jackson got on with a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Iowa got on the board, 1-0, on an RBI single from Roman. After a pitching change, Illinois State got the final two outs to close out the win.

Iowa finished the game with one run on four hits. Illinois State finished the game with two runs on six hits.

NOTABLES

Hawkeyes Pounce On Panthers

Sports

April 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team beat Milwaukee, 11-6, on Tuesday evening at Duane Banks Field.

“It was good to get to play today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “I was a little worried over the weekend when I saw the forecast in Milwaukee. We were fortunate that Shaun and their staff agreed it was the right thing to do to come down.”

Iowa batted .351 overall and .304 with runners on base, totaling 14 hits to Milwaukee’s seven.

An RBI SAC fly from Miles Risley put Iowa on the board in the first. The Hawkeyes scored three more in the third frame on a Risley RBI double down the left field line, a Tyler Guerin RBI fielder’s choice and a wild pitch. Iowa added to its lead in the next inning when Reese Moore hit an RBI double to the right field wall.

The Hawkeyes (21-10, 12-3) poured on four more in the fifth as Blake Guerin clobbered his seventh home run of the season. Kellen Strohymer then went opposite field for a three-run bomb off the scoreboard. It was Strohmeyer’s second-career home run. Two more Hawkeyes came home in the seventh when Daniel Rogers hit an RBI SAC fly and Andy Nelson slapped an RBI single.

Gable MitchellKooper Schulte, Strohmeyer and Moore all had multi-hit games, led by Strohmeyer with three. Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. Schulte went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

“There were really some bright spots today,” said Heller. “Strohmeyer had a great game. There’s guys on the team that have been caught in between not being able to go because this guy is playing well or this guy is playing well. Strohmeyer has played well all the times he’s been out there, he just hasn’t been out there a lot. It felt like today was the day to give him the chance to play the whole game and get out there and go, and I’m glad we made that decision.”

Jaron Bleeker started on the mound for Iowa. The right-hander escaped a bases loaded jam with a double play in the first inning and then settled in, retiring Milwaukee in order in the second. He walked two batters and gave up one hit in two innings of work. Chas Wheatley was credited with the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. He struck out two Panthers and walked one over one inning.

“If I’m in that bullpen, I’m thinking there’s some spots to be had, and I’m going to jump up and grab it,” said Heller. “That’s what you’re hoping for in these midweek games is that if you’re not getting the innings you want or your role isn’t what you expect or like or whatever, here’s an opporutnity to say, ‘Give me a shot.”

Seven other Iowa pitchers took the hill throughout the game. Justin Hackett struck out the side in his lone inning of work. Anthony Watts did the same in the ninth to clinch the victory.

“It was really a tale of two games in one,” said Heller. “The first five innings I thought were outstanding. The last four really weren’t. We made some mistakes and didn’t pitch great at times. I was hoping we didn’t have to use Watts, but we got to a point where we had to.”

The Hawkeye pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts, gave up six free bases and allowed three earned runs. Milwaukee (9-21, 7-4) scored two runs in the sixth and four in the eighth.

Up Next

The Hawkeyes will be back home this weekend for a three-game series against Nebraska on April 11-13. First pitch is set for 6:02 p.m. (CDT) on Friday. The game will be broadcast on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
