Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, neighbors settle road dispute

News, Sports

February 6th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Attorneys for Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and his neighbors say they’ve settled a dispute over a private road and the coach’s refusal to join a homeowner’s association. A trial was scheduled to start Tuesday in the dispute that pitted Iowa’s highest-paid public employee and his wife against the three other families who live on Saddle Club Road outside Iowa City.

Neighbors filed a lawsuit after the Ferentzes refused to join a homeowners’ association and ignored a $9,500 assessment for road repairs. Neighbors say the Ferentzes trespassed by erecting privacy fencing and landscaping in the shared easement and roadway. Homeowners’ association attorney Adam Tarr says his clients “look forward to working with the Ferentzes instead of against them.”

The Ferentzes’ attorney, Mark Roberts, says, “the neighbors will all be glad to resolve this matter without a trial.”

G League grants Santa Cruz protest, orders game restarted

Sports

February 6th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA G League has granted a protest by the Santa Cruz Warriors and ordered the final 17.5 seconds of their loss to Iowa to be replayed.

Golden State’s affiliate protested its 116-113 loss on Jan. 19 after being incorrectly assessed a technical foul for calling an excessive timeout. The Warriors should have been granted a “reset timeout,” a rule in the G League allowing teams to advance the ball without calling time and stopping play.

The Wolves made the technical free throw, then two more after Santa Cruz fouled intentionally to take a 114-111 lead. The G League says Monday that the sequence unfairly impacted the game and ordered it to be restarted tied at 111 with Santa Cruz in possession of the ball.

The replay will take place March 23 in Santa Cruz before the teams’ regularly scheduled game.

Baylor snaps 4-game losing skid, beats Iowa State 81-67

Sports

February 4th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

WACO, Texas (AP) — Terry Maston scored a career-high 23 points and Baylor ended a four-game losing streak with an 81-67 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night. The lead changed hands eight times before the Bears went on a 15-0 run over a 2:12 span early in the second half. Baylor had three 3-point plays during the spurt, including one that resulted in a five-point trip after Iowa State coach Steve Prohm was hit with a technical foul.

Baylor (13-10, 3-7 Big 12 Conference) led 51-38 at that point and the Cyclones never got closer than eight the rest of the way. Donovan Jackson had 15 points to lead Iowa State (12-10, 3-7). Cameron Lard and Lindell Wigginton scored 14 points apiece. All of Wigginton’s came in the first half, and he led the Cyclones with eight assists.

Iowa State was 9 for 20 from 3-point range (45 percent), but shot 34 percent overall. The Cyclones fell to 0-5 on the road in the Big 12, thanks in large part to inconsistency. Jackson only had two points in the first half before finding his shot in the second, while Wigginton was 0 for 7 after halftime.

Iowa State finishes a two-game road trip on Wednesday when it meets No. 10 Texas Tech, which is tied for first in the Big 12.
