Sports

April 12th, 2025 by Christian Adams

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – The University of Iowa rowing team finished the day with three wins in the 1V8, 3V8 and 4V8 boat classes at the Kansas Double Duel.

The Hawkeyes competed in all seven boat classes, 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, 4V8, 1V4, 2V4, and 3V4. This was the first competition for the novice 3V8 and 4V8 boats. Iowa raced against Minnesota, 3V8, and Kansas today who was hosting the Double Duel at Wyandotte County Lake Park.

Iowa returns to action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. (CT), racing against San Diego. Fans can follow along live on CrewTimer.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH JEFF GARBUTT
“Today saw a good bit of positives for the team as a whole. We had a couple of wins and another few really close races. The highlight for me is always when we have younger athletes competing for the first time as Hawks and those that got their first wins today. I am really excited by everyone’s progress this year, having a team that is majority first and second year athletes. Having better conditions than in Sarasota allowed our women the opportunity to test our fitness and see our true speed. We are resting, refueling, and regrouping for tomorrow, hoping to see them improve and get 1% better every day! Go Hawks!”

FINISHES
Iowa pulled strong to start, taking a few seats over Kansas through the first 1000-meters of the race. In the middle meters of the race, Iowa found an open water advantage over the Jayhawks and didn’t give it up, finishing the final 500-meters strong.

Sports

April 12th, 2025 by Christian Adams

DES MOINES, Iowa —  The University of Iowa track and field team secured four event wins at the Jim Duncan Invitational on Friday afternoon.

“Although we didn’t have too many athletes compete today, I was very pleased with our overall performances from Jim Duncan,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said.  “I was really happy for Wisdom to throw over 16 meters again and set an outdoor personal-best for the win in the shot put. Austin Busch competed very well and had a nice series of throws. Duke Faley competed very well today for his first collegiate win in the discus. We had multiple personal-bests on the track, led by freshmen Marissa Long and Armaan Chopra in the 1,500 meters. It was good to see Alivia get some momentum going in the hammer throw and be right off of her personal-best. I’m excited to see her progress over these next few meets.”

Cyclones Upend No. 17 Oklahoma State in Series-Opener

Sports

April 12th, 2025 by Christian Adams

STILLWATER, Okla. – Iowa State (19-17, 8-5 Big 12) earned its fifth Big 12 series-opening win of the season, upending No. 17 Oklahoma State (23-13, 5-6 Big 12) in extra innings Friday afternoon, winning 5-4.
The Cyclones have now won four of their last five contests against the Cowgirls, as the team earned its first ranked win of the season. The win was Coach Pinkerton’s 14th against a ranked team while at Iowa State, and the sixth ranked win against OSU during that time.
Karlee Ford was the hero, as the freshman catcher drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth, as she singled a two-out, bases-loaded pitch up the middle to score the team’s fifth run.
She wasn’t alone in difference makers, though, as fellow rookie Jessie Clemons also had herself a day, securing a career-high four hits. Sydney Malott also had a stellar outing, crushing a pair of homers – the first multi-homer game of her career – and plating three runs. Angelina Allen also had a benchmark day, as the senior notched her 200th career hit on the day, becoming the seventh player in school history to do so.
In the circle, Lauren Schurman got the start for the Cyclones, throwing four innings of action. In her four frames, Schurman allowed one run on four hits before being replaced by Jaiden Ralston. Ralston (5-5) gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits as she finished the game and earned her fifth win of the year.
For the Cowgirls, the duo of Rosie Davis and Megan Bloodworth each blasted solo shots to account for two of the team’s RBI. Davis also drove in two more runs in the seventh to tie the game at four. Bloodworth, Davis and Tia Warsop all had two hits on the day to lead the team. Ruby Meylan (15-6) went the distance for OSU, striking out a career-high 14 batters, but suffered her sixth loss of the season in the process.
How it Happened
The Cyclones strung together some quality early at-bats, taking a 1-0 lead in the first frame. Tatum Johnson drew a one-out walk and was doubled to third three pitches later by Allen. With two in scoring position and just one out, Clemons singled through the right side to score Johnson and gave ISU its one-run lead. Back-to-back strikeouts from Ruby Meylan and the Cowgirls would end the ISU threat.
Oklahoma State evened things up in the flipside of the frame with one swing as Rosie Davis blasted a two-out homer over the right field wall to knot things up at one apiece.
A scoreless second inning gave way to the third. ISU went three-up, three-down at the plate in the top half before OSU began to threaten in the bottom. A leadoff Cowgirl double was followed by a walk and a bunt single and Oklahoma State loaded the bases with no outs. Schurman and the Cyclones stayed calm, though, rattling off a fielder’s choice out at the plate, a foul ball flyout, and a lineout to end the inning and avoid any damage.
The Cyclones retook the lead in the fourth, thanks to Malott. Clemons led the inning off with a double down the left line to get things going. Then, two batters later, Malott cranked a one-out first pitch over the right field wall to push the ISU lead to 3-1.
The game would turn to the fifth, with ISU leading by two. The Cyclones, who were 13-1 when leading after four, were looking to hold on for their first ranked win of the year. Megan Bloodworth dented those hopes in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to trim the lead to just one.
Neither team plated a runner in the sixth and the team would turn to a decisive seventh inning. Leading off the seventh for ISU was Malott, and she wasn’t satisfied with just one home run, so she blasted another – a leadoff, six-pitch ball this time over the left field fence – to give ISU some insurance and make it 4-2.
The Cowgirls rallied though in the bottom of the inning, tying things up at two. A leadoff single started things off and eventually moved to third following an outfield collision by the Cyclones, resulting in an error to put runners in scoring position. Down to their final strike, Rosie Davis blooped a ball into no man’s land in the outfield to score both runners and send the game to extras.
In the eighth, Johnson led things off with a walk. Clemons singled two batters later and Malott would later draw a walk to load the bases with two outs. An 0-3 Ford would step into the box and deliver a clutch hit up the middle to score Johnson and give Iowa State the 5-4 lead.
In the flipside of the frame, OSU’s first two batters popped up and grounded out to put the team down to its final out. A Rachael Hathoot single gave the Cowgirls life, but a two-out pop-up ended things as ISU secured the series-opening win.

Hawkeyes Shutout Huskers

Sports

April 12th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team shutout Nebraska, 1-0, in the series-opener at Duane Banks Field on Friday evening.

Junior Cade Obermueller started on the mound and produced yet another quality start. He struck out 11 batters and surrendered two hits and two walks over seven innings of work. Anthony Watts came in to relieve him and earned the save. He gave up one hit and struck out three.

“It was definitely an old school pitchers dual,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Obe was really good again tonight. Didn’t quite have the command he has had his last couple outings, but when he got some traffic he buckled down and made pitches when he had to.”

Kooper Schulte put the Hawkeyes ahead, 1-0, in the second frame with a 424-foot shot that cleared the scoreboard in left field. Iowa recorded two other hits on the night — singles from Gable Mitchell and Ben Swails.

“I am really happy with how we handled it,” said Heller. “The offense has been going so well, sometimes when you have a game like that the frustration really sets in because you start assuming you are going to score 10 runs and that’s not the way it is on a traditional Friday night. The thing I am thinking about the most I have been hoping we would get a win like that, we just hadn’t had that yet.”

Iowa (22-10, 13-3) held the Huskers to a .097 batting average (3-for-31) and recorded its seventh shutout of the season, good for second most in the NCAA.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes and Nebraska (15-19, 4-9) will continue the series tomorrow with game two at 2:02 p.m. (CDT). The game will be broadcast on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Atlantic Senior Xavier Darrow Signs with Central Football Program

Sports

April 11th, 2025 by Christian Adams

Atlantic Trojans Senior Xavier Darrow will continue his football career by signing his letter of intent with the Central College Dutch Friday. Darrow was surrounded by friends and family when he put pen to paper in Atlantic’s auditorium and is thrilled for his time in Pella to begin but also knows it’s no walk in the park.

Darrow comes off the 2024 season with six catches and 75 yards with three touchdowns for the Trojans and was pursued to play both sides of the ball. The Central College commit believes he wants to focus on playing defense at the next level.

The coaching staff at Central College made it clear they had Darrow on their mind and the Trojan senior says that was a major factor.

Staying in Iowa was on Darrow’s checklist and is glad he was able to check that off.

James and Kara Darrow are extremely proud of Xavier and fell in love with Central College’s campus as much as their son did.

Darrow will begin his college football career this upcoming fall.
