Estrella Named Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award Winner

Sports

April 14th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s wrestler Nanea Estrella has been selected as the inaugural female winner of the Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award. Estrella was presented with the award by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti on Monday after practice.
The Big Ten Jackie Robinson Award recognizes student-athletes whose significant community service contributions align with Jackie Robinson’s legacy of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence.
Each of the 18 Big Ten member institutions nominated one female and one male student-athlete who serves their campus communities and has demonstrated impact, collaboration and teamwork, consistency, commitment, visibility, and advocacy.
The Big Ten selected one male and one female award winner from the 36 nominations with Estrella being chosen as the female award winner. All other nominees will receive individual awards for their community service efforts.
“We are always really excited to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our student athletes,” said Commissioner Petitti. “We see them do it athletically on the biggest stages, but also there’s a quiet thing they do, which is impact their communities and to recognize Nanea for what she does, there’s nothing better than being on campus, being able to do this in person.”
The Makawao, Hawaii, native spearheaded an online donation drive in to help support the people of Lahaina after one the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history leveled the town in August of 2023. Though Estrella was not born in Lahaina, it was her second home as she went to high school at Lahainaluna.
“They always accepted me as one of their own,” Estrella says. “I’ve done so many fundraisers in Lahaina that made it possible for me to compete nationally in wrestling.
The senior organized a toy/sports equipment drive and a virtual food drive for the Maui Food Bank to help the residents of Lahaina. Her efforts raised over $5,000 for the Maui Food Bank and sent countless toys and sports equipment to families who lost everything.
“It meant the world to me to come back to Iowa City and feel the support from Iowa and feel that Hawkeyes really want to help,” said Estrella. “The Hawkeye community gave me the same support that Lahaina gave me when I was younger. It gave me a little reminder of home and makes me feel so confident in my decision to be here. I’m just so grateful.”
It has been 20 months since the fires and the community of Lahaina is still far from being repaired. Estrella makes an effort that every time she returns home to help run wrestling practices as her way of giving back to the community while also continuing to grow the sport.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH TYLER STITH
“We knew with the conditions the course would be totally different today. The north wind makes this pace a lot more difficult.  That’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to come from behind.  Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of the conditions or our course knowledge. We got off to a poor start and never put any pressure on Kansas. From there, I think we pressed too hard which is ultimately going to cost you strokes.”

UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes will travel to West Lafayette to compete in the Boilermaker Intercollegiate hosted by Purdue. This event will conclude the Hawkeye’s regular season before they compete in the Big Ten Championships.

Defensive back Tre Bell on his transition to Iowa State

Sports

April 14th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State corner Tre Bell had to give up his first love of basketball to see how far he could go in football. Bell began his college career as a football and basketball player at Lindenwood in St. Louis and transferred to Iowa State after deciding to concentrate on football. He is vying to become a starting corner for the Cyclones in spring drills.

Bell felt Iowa State was a place he could reach his potential.

Bell admits it was not an easy decision to give up on basketball.

Bell hopes for a similar career track as former Cyclone Darien Porter, who blossomed in his final year.

ISU corner’s coach Hank Poteat likes the progress Bell has been making in practice.

Poteat says Bell has been a great fit for the program.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Maryland in game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at the Maryland Softball Stadium. The Hawkeyes beat the Terrapins, 7-2, sweeping the series.
Junior Jalen Adams (18-5) picked up her 23rd start of the season in the finale. Adams threw her 14th complete game of the season, fanning four and walking two. Six of Iowa’s seven hits went for extra bases. Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both pitchers had strong starts to the game working around a few baserunners but managed to keep the game scoreless.
Junior Avery Jackson started the third inning for the Hawkeyes with a double to right center, and with heads up base running was able to score from second on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Jena Young to give Iowa the early lead, 1-0. The Terrapins had two, two-out singles in the inning, but Adams picked up a strikeout to end the threat.

Iowa plated a run for the third straight inning in the fifth as Jackson came around on an RBI bunt from Young to make it 3-0.  A solo home run for the Terrapins got Maryland on the board in the bottom half, 3-1.

Hawkeyes Fall to Huskers in Game 3

Sports

April 14th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Nebraska, 6-4, to close out the series at Duane Banks Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawkeyes (23-11, 15-4) smacked eight hits and left 11 runners on base. Nebraska (16-20, 5-10) batted .206 as a team with seven hits.

“We had a few opportunities and just had poor execution,” said head coach Rick Heller. “The one inning where they tried to give it to us with the errors — that was the one where we needed to break it open. With runners in scoring position, you get two strikeouts, and we only end up getting one run that inning. I guess that’s the biggest story is that we only had a couple opportunities, but we didn’t put a crooked number up there, and that’s what we’ve been doing. Today it just didn’t happen.”

Iowa got on the board in the second inning when Jackson Beaman hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Kooper Schulte. Nebraska tied the game in the third with a solo home run and then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth with two more solo shots.

The Hawkeyes answered right back in the bottom half of the fourth. They capitalized on a couple Husker errors, and then Gable Mitchell hit an RBI SAC fly to knot the game at three apiece.

Daniel Rogers hit an RBI double in the seventh inning to put Iowa ahead, 4-3. Nebraska took a 5-4 lead in the eighth, taking advantage of two Hawkeye errors, and tacked on another run in the ninth on an RBI single.

Reece Beuter started on the hill for the Hawkeyes. He gave up three runs on three hits and struck out seven Huskers through five innings. Ben DeTaeye came out of the bullpen, surrendering just one hit and punching out three in two innings of work. Daniel Wright then took the mound, giving up three runs — two earned — on two hits in 1 1/3 innings. Wright was tagged with the loss.

“On the positive side, I thought Reece Beuter gave us a good start,” said Heller. “The three solo home runs, with the way the wind was blowing early, it felt like we would give up a home run or two during the day. But that was fine because I felt like we would eventually score some runs, and why wouldn’t you with the way we’ve been going offensively.”
