Jefferson Named Finalist for Karl Malone Award

Sports

March 12th, 2026 by Clayton Wollner

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  – Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson has been named a finalist for the Karl Malone Award. Jefferson is among five power forwards in the country that made it to the final stage. Former Cyclone Georges Niang was the second winner of the award in 2016.
So far this season, Jefferson has been named a First Team All-American by The Sporting News, while he was also an All-Big 12 First Team selection. He’s the 31st All-American in school history and the third to be named a firs team selection by one of the four major outlets.
Jefferson was Mr. Do-It-All once again for the Cyclones, as he became the first player in Big 12 history to turn in multiple triple-doubles in Big 12 play. He’s averaging 16.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He’s the only Power Conference player in the country to average those numbers. Only five players have done so in an entire season in the country going back to 1974-75, with no one in the Big 12 having accomplished it. Jefferson has scored in double figures in all 32 games this season, while his streak of 38-straight games going back to last season ranks as the third-longest in the nation.
Earlier this week, Iowa State junior Milan Momcilovic was named a finalist for the Julius Erving Award, giving the Cyclones two finalist on the five awards that are handed out by the Hoop Hall of Fame.
The annual Karl Malone Award, named after the Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, celebrates its 12th year by recognizing the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in both of the remaining rounds starting on Friday, March 13, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In late March, the five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committees, where the winner will be selected. The Selection Committee for the Karl Malone Award is composed of top men’s college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2026 Malone Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar  Award (Center).
Previous winners of the Karl Malone Award are Johni Broome, Auburn (2025), Jaedon LeDee, San Diego State (2024), Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana (2023), Keegan Murray, Iowa (2022), Drew Timme, Gonzaga (2021), Obi Toppin, Dayton (2020), Zion Williamson, Duke (2019), Deandre Ayton, Arizona (2018), Johnathan Motley, Baylor (2017), Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016), and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).

Southwest Valley Boys Track and Field Looking To Build Off Of 2025 Season

Sports

March 12th, 2026 by Clayton Wollner

The 2025 Southwest Valley Boys Track and Field finished with ten top 5 finishes and took 5th at the Pride of Iowa Conference Championships. They sent six events to state and are returning all but one of those runners. The 2026 Timberwolves are highlighted by junior Brody Crosier and other upperclassmen who are looking to repeat their success from last season. With all of the talent from last year returning, Head Coach Jason Shults thinks this team is deep and can repeat a lot of the success from 2025.

Coach Jason Hults thinks last year went well but really thinks his boys can take the next step this season and strive for even higher goals:

Brody Crosier is coming off of a great sophomore season where he excelled at multiple events, which included both sprint and jump events:

This 2026 Timberwolves group includes multiple runners who have been to state more than once. This experience is something that Coach Hults sees as the biggest strength heading into the season:

That experience not only helps on the track, but those upperclassmen are huge help to the newer runners on the team who are still getting used to the swing of things:

The 2026 Southwest Valley Timberwolves Boys season beings on March 13th when they head to the Lied Recreation Athletic Center for the IATC Indoor Boys Championships.

Audubon Wheelers Boys Track and Field Set to Begin 2026 Season

Sports

March 12th, 2026 by Clayton Wollner

The Audubon Wheelers Boys Track and Field squad believes they have what it takes to have a successful season. In 2025, shot putter Lance Meyer, the 4×110 shuttle hurdle and the 1600m sprint medley relay teams competed at state. As a team, Audubon placed 56th overall. This year’s 1600m relay team will be without two seniors from the 2025 season, however they were led by Aiden Kjergaard, who returns as a sophomore. Head Coach Tony Konkler believes if they can find a way to fill in the gaps, they will be competitive in the long-distance events again.

Jorgen Nowatzke, who was a key part the 2026 Wheelers playoff basketball run, is expected to make a jump in the track world as well. Coach Konkler says the sophomore can trim down his 400m time of 54.79 from last season:

Audubon won’t be a huge team this year, but Coach Konkler thinks they can still find success in the mid-distance relay events:

Brody Schultes is the only senior of the group, but his leadership and work ethic has a positive effect on everyone. He has state meet experience and is a great example for the younger runners on the team.

This 2026 Audubon squad has set a high standard for themselves this season, and Coach Konkler encourages them to keep setting higher goals to reach:

The Audubon Boys Track and Field Season begins at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center on March 13th for the 2026 IATC Boys Indoor Championships.
