Lipsey Earns CSC Academic All-America Honors

Sports

April 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior point guard Tamin Lipsey has been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America First Team, the organization announced Tuesday morning. Lipsey was one of three repeat selections from last season and the only representative from the Big 12 on the three teams.

Lipsey, a second team selection last year, joins fellow Ames native, Fred Hoiberg, as the only two-time CSC Academic All-America selections in program history. Like Lipsey, Hoiberg earned second team honors in 1994 before earning first team honors in 1995. Melvin Ejim (2014) is the only other first team selection in program history.

The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. Student-athletes must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and the proper athletic accomplishments to make the ballot. Lipsey was previously named to the Academic All-District® team and advanced to the national ballot. All student-athletes are required to have one year in residence or be a transfer to be eligible for the team.

Lipsey was a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award, while he was also a finalist for the Nolan Richardson Award, presented to the player that is the heart and soul of a winning team. Lipsey earned All-Big 12 honors for the second-straight season, being named to the third team this season. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.

Lipsey hit a pair of career milestones throughout the season. On Feb. 22 he broke Monté Morris’ career steals record with the 226th swipe of his career. He became the 35th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points against BYU on March 4. Lipsey is one of just 26 players in men’s college basketball to play 100 games and average 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game since 1947-48. Lipsey averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 steals this year.

Malott & Schurman Sweep Big 12 Weekly Awards

Sports

April 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior infielder Sydney Malott and sophomore right-handed pitcher Lauren Schurman combined to sweep the conference weekly awards on Tuesday, the conference announced. Malott was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, while Schurman earned the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week.
Malott becomes the seventh player in school history to earn a Big 12 Player of the Week honor, while Schurman became the seventh player in school history to earn a Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor. It’s just the third time in Big 12 history that ISU has swept the weekly awards and the first time since 2017.
Both Malott and Schurman played huge roles in Iowa State’s historic weekend where it took the road series over No. 17 Oklahoma State, 2-1. The series win was ISU’s first-ever road series victory over a ranked opponent. The series win was also the third of the season – a new program record for most in a year. The Cyclones claimed Big 12 wins eight and nine in the process, setting the mark for most conference wins in a single season in school annals.
Malott collected five hits last week for the Cyclones, with all five going for extra bases. The junior out of Liberty, Missouri, cranked four home runs on the week – all coming on the road at No. 17 Oklahoma State. She launched two long balls in Friday’s series-opener against the Cowgirls to earn her first career multi-home run game. She was one of just two Cyclones to have hits in all four games last week, as she led the team in homers, RBI (6), total bases (18) and slugging percentage (1.385).
Schurman made appearances in three of the team’s four games, totaling a 0.72 ERA on the week. She earned her ninth win of the season against Kansas City in the midweek before earning a pair of starts in wins against the Cowgirls. Schurman totaled 9.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run across her three outings.
Both Malott and Schurman will be back in action this afternoon, as Iowa State is set to host Iowa in the first of two Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series contests. Today’s game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. As always, admission to the Cyclones Sports Complex is free.
