Iowa State is deep at LB in spring drills

Sports

April 21st, 2025 by Ric Hanson

A healthy linebacker corps will be a plus for the Iowa State defense next season. That unit was decimated by injuries in 2024 and several young players were counted on to fill in. Cyclone linebackers coach Colby Kratch.

Kratch says with so many experienced linebackers on the roster it will give the Cyclones some flexibility.

One of those forced into action as a true freshman last season was Beau Goodwin. The former Kingsley-Pierson star appeared in 12 games and started two.

Goodwin felt playing at a small high school actually prepared him to get early playing time.

Goodwin says there is a lot of room for improvement and that is what he is focused on this spring.

After finishing 11-3 the expectations for next season will be high but Goodwin feels the Cyclones can handle it.

The Cyclones close out spring drills on Saturday.

Cyclones Fall in Series Finale to Kansas

Sports

April 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (23-19, 11-7 Big 12) was unable to complete its second Big 12 series sweep of the season Saturday, as Kansas (19-22, 5-13 Big 12) salvaged the weekend by taking game three, 13-5, in five innings.
The Jayhawks scored all 13 runs across innings two through five as they earned their second conference run-rule victory of the season. It also marked the second-straight day that KU was able to score in four-straight innings against the Cyclones.
Six Cyclones collected a hit on the day, with Ashley Minor and McKenna Andrews leading the way in the RBI department, as each had two. Isabelle Nosan scored a team-best two runs, while three ISU athletes drew walks.
Jaiden Ralston (8-7) got the start for ISU, making her third appearance of the weekend. After three frames, she would be replaced by Abby Huhn, who made her first appearance of the weekend, before Lauren Schurman closed things out.
The Kansas bats were led by leadoff batter Presley Limbaugh, who went 3-4 with an RBI. Cambell Bagshaw had a game-high five RBI, while Olivia Bruno had four as each had a homer. In the circle, Katie Brooks went the distance, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out four ISU players.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first from each dugout, the Kansas offense got into a flow and scored its 13 runs across the next four frames.
With a runner on second and two outs, Anna Soles singled to left field to score KU’s first run of the game to make it 1-0 through two frames.
The Jayhawks added another three runs in the third, driving in a pair of singles on an Olivia Bruno shot to center field as they pushed their lead to 4-0.
Iowa State got on the board in the bottom of the inning, as a leadoff single from Isabelle Nosan was promptly homered in by Andrews, who jumped on the first pitch she saw, clobbering it over the left field fence for her second dinger of the season.
Kansas hit right back, though, in the fourth, scoring an additional five runs. A Hailey Cripe two-RBI double got the scoring started before Campbell Bagshaw homered a few at-bats later to drive in three more runs. At the midway point of the fourth, it was 9-2 in favor of the Jayhawks.
The Cyclones got a bit of a rally going in the fourth, plating three to cut the KU lead to three. Angelina Allen led off with a walk before Reagan Bartholomew blasted a single up the middle to put two on. A Nosan walk would load the bases with two outs and bring up Ashley Minor in a pinch-hit appearance. The fourth pitch of the at-bat, ball three, got past the KU catcher to allow Allen to score to make it 9-3. The very next pitch, Minor blooped one over the shortstop’s glove to drive in a pair and make it 9-5.
KU pulled away, though, in the fifth, scoring another four runs to go up eight. The Jayhawks would handle ISU in the bottom of the frame to earn the five-inning run-rule victory.
Saturday Notes

Hawkeyes Set 3 School Records in Florida

Sports

April 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

Gainesville, Fla. – The University of Iowa track and field team wrapped up a strong weekend of competition by setting three program records in Florida on Saturday afternoon. Fifth-year senior Kalen Walker broke his own school record in the 100 meters, freshman Chioma Nwachukwu set a new program best in the 400 meters, and the women’s 4×400-meter relay team posted the fastest time in school history.

“I was very pleased overall with our performances today,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “It was very exciting to see Kalen (Walker) back in action for the first time this season in an Iowa uniform, and he didn’t disappoint by breaking his own school record in the 100 meters. His time is top 10 in the NCAA this season and is one of a few that is under the legal 2.0 wind.”

At the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Walker clocked a personal-best 10.06 in the 100-meter invite, improving on his previous record of 10.09 and finishing fifth overall.

Nwachukwu recorded a school-record time of 51.26 in the women’s 400-meter invite, placing seventh and achieving a new personal best. Fellow freshmen Damaris Mutunga (52.13) and Alivia Williams (52.92) also notched personal bests in the event. Mutunga’s time ranks seventh all-time at Iowa.

The women’s 4×400-meter relay team of Olicia Lucas, Mutunga, Williams, and Nwachukwu clocked a program-best 3:30.92 to finish 13th overall. The quartet previously held the number two spot in school history with a time of 3:31.55.

In the women’s 4×100-meter relay, the team of Holly Duax, Lucas, Williams, and Lia Love ran 44.29, ranking fifth all-time at Iowa.

“I was very thrilled with how well Lia (Love) and Holly (Duax) ran in the 100 meter with Lia (Love) finishing top eight overall,” Woody added. “Holly had a huge personal best that will give her lots of confidence going into these next few. The women sprinters started us off on a high note in the 4×100-meter relay running the fifth fastest all-time at Iowa for the first time they’ve ran together this year.”

“The women’s 400-meter group all ran terrific races today led by Chioma’s school record. Kai (Graves-Blanks) and Tyler (Kenaga) had terrific prelim races in the 110-meter hurdles with a huge personal best by Tyler and Kai winning his heat against the NCAA indoor 60-meter hurdle champion,” Woody said. “Unfortunately, there was a lot of bumping in the finals and Kai lost his balance and ran into the hurdles. The women’s 4×400-meter relay team finished the day on another high note breaking another school record and setting them up well going into the next few meets.”

At the Kansas Relays, senior Drake Woody threw a personal-best 59.70 meters in the javelin.

At the Mt. Sac Relays, freshman Maria Arboleda earned silver in the women’s high jump elite, clearing 1.85 meters. In the women’s 800 meters, senior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch was the top collegiate finisher with a time of 2:03.60.

Hawkeyes Sweep Wolverines

Sports

April 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The University of Iowa baseball team earned its third Big Ten series sweep of the season with a 7-4 victory over Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium.

The Hawkeyes outhit the Wolverines, 9-7, and batted .257 overall.

“Offensively, we had chances to break it open early and didn’t execute real well,” said head coach Rick Heller. “The pitchers picked us up this weekend and the offense did just enough. I’m really happy for the team.”

Michigan (23-17, 8-10) got on the board in the first inning with a solo home run. The Hawkeyes (27-11, 17-4) tied the game and took the lead in the fifth when Miles Risley hit a two-out two-strike 2 RBI single. Iowa added another run in the seventh on a Blake Guerin RBI single up the middle.

The Wolverines cut their deficit to one in the seventh, scoring on an error, and then knotted the game at three in the eighth.

The Hawkeyes responded with a four-run ninth inning, highlighted by an RBI SAC fly from Risley and a bases-clearing double from pinch-hitter Mitch Wood.

“Mitch Wood steps up with a two-strike two-out bases loaded double over the right fielder’s head to break it open for us,” said Heller. “I couldn’t be happier for Mitch. He’s been waiting for his time. He about tied it up for us last week in the game we lost to Nebraska, but he came through today.”

Michigan hit a bomb in the bottom of the ninth to make it 7-4 in favor of the Hawkeyes. Risley robbed Michigan of another home run in the ninth with a leaping catch in center field.

“Risley made an unbelieveable catch in centerfield in the ninth inning to really finish it off for us,” said Heller.

Risley led the Iowa offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, three RBIs and a run scored.

Reece Beuter got the start for Iowa. He threw six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while walking two batters and matching a career-high with eight strikeouts.

Anthony Watts came out of the bullpen and threw the final two innings to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out one.

“Reece Beuter was outstanding today,” said Heller. “After that, the bullpen hung on for us. Hogue and Watts did a really nice job of shutting it down.”

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes will be back home on Tuesday for a midweek contest with Western Illinois. First pitch is set for 6:02 p.m. (CDT) at Duane Banks Field. The game will be broadcast on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
