Iowa baseball hosts No. 10 Oregon State beginning Friday night in Des Moines

Sports

May 8th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The goal for Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller is to win a series against 10th ranked Oregon State while setting up his pitching for next week’s Big Ten series at home against fifth ranked Oregon. The Hawkeyes and Beavers open a three game series Friday night at Principal Park in Des Moines and with the potential Big Ten clinching series against the Ducks starting on Thursday, Iowa starting pitchers will have shorter stints this weekend.

Heller says the series against Oregon State will be good preparation for Oregon.

Oregon State will have plenty to play for. The Beavers are in a position where they could host an NCAA Regional with a strong finish.

As the state’s only division one program, Heller says playing a series in Des Moines is a great way to promote college baseball.

The series will continue with single games Saturday and Sunday.

Drake football coach Joe Woodley on adding depth

Sports

May 8th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Drake football coach Joe Woodley says he may search the transfer portal to add depth at running back and wide receiver. The position group were a bit of a concern for the Bulldogs, who closed out spring drills last week.

Woodley says how active they are in the portal may depend on how many Drake players may decide to move on.

Woodley says Drake has been and will remain a program that develops players and the portal will be used to fill some immediate needs.

Woodley will debut as Drake coach on August 28th when the Bulldogs host Upper Iowa.

ACGC Looking to Stay Hot After Conference Championship

Sports

May 8th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The ACGC Chargers are cooking into the last few regular season competitions after winning two of the last three meets including taking the conference title. Head Coach Cody Matthewson says this success has been a long time in the making.

With the West Central Activities Conference Championship, that was ACGC’s sixth first-place finish at a meet this season and Matthewson says points are coming from everywhere. However, he believes the hurdlers have been the Chargers’ strongest weapon this season.

ACGC had six finish place finishes at the conference meet and have high hopes for what lies ahead.

The Chargers will compete at the Panorama co-ed meet and the Merritt-Charger Invitational before the state qualifying meet at Madrid.

Sports

May 7th, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Maria Arboleda was named the Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.

The freshman from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, earned the honor following a record-breaking performance at the Musco Twilight. Arboleda set both a facility and school record in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters. The mark improved her previous school record and currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division I and second in the Big Ten.

Arboleda claimed the event title in Iowa City and is now the top-ranked freshman nationally in the high jump.

This is Iowa’s sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor during the outdoor season. Duke Faley, Bryce Ruland, and Chioma Nwachukwu have also received the recognition earlier this spring. It marks Arboleda’s second Freshman of the Week award this season, with her first honor on April 2.

The Hawkeyes conclude the regular season, sending a small group to the Cyclone Twilight in Ames on Friday, May 9. The one-day meet begins at 3:00 p.m. (CT).

Iowa Falls to Penn State at Big Ten Tournament

Sports

May 7th, 2025 by Christian Adams

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The six-seed University of Iowa softball team fell to 11-seed Penn State, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Bittinger Stadium in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Junior Jalen Adams (25-6) got the start and threw four and 1/3 innings allowing six runs on six hits and fanning two. Freshman Talia Tretton threw the final 2 2/3 allowing no runs on six hits. Redshirt junior Desiree Rivera picked up the only multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomores Soo-Jin Berry and Devin Simon each picked an RBI in the game.

How It Happened
Adams came out dominant and retired the Nittany Lions in order to start the game. Iowa had two base runners in the bottom of the inning but were unable to capitalize on the free passes. Penn State was first on the board in the top of the second on a two-run home run to center field. The Nittany Lions extended their lead, 3-0, in the third on a solo shot.

Rivera picked up the Hawkeyes first hit of the game with a two-out single in the third but Iowa was unable to get on the board. Iowa got on the board in the home half of the fourth. Berry started the inning with a walk and got into scoring position on a wild pitch. Simon put the Hawkeyes on the board with an RBI double to the left center gap.

Penn State answered back in the fifth adding runs on an two-RBI single and an RBI triple pushing its lead, 6-1. In the bottom of the inning Rivera laced a double to left center with one out. Berry cashed in for Iowa with an RBI single, cutting the Penn State lead to four.

The Nittany Lions threatened in sixth getting runners on the corners, but Rivera threw out her, conference leading, 15th base stealer of the season to end the inning.

Penn State loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Tretton held strong in the circle and sat down the next three Nittany Lion hitters. In the final frame, Bennett reached on a single but that was it for Iowa as the game came to a close.

Iowa finished the game with two runs on five hits and left eight runners on. Penn State had six runs on 12 hits and left seven runners on base.
