Higgins is trying to adjust to the next level.

Higgins made history by becoming the first second round draft pick to sign a guaranteed contract.

Higgins says he learned a lot by playing at Iowa State under coach Matt Campbell.

Bizarre tie ends Iowa baseball series against No. 10 Oregon State in Des Moines

Sports

May 11th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Oregon State had a plane to catch and it cost may have prevented the Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team from posting a victory over a top 10 foe. Sunday’s series finale at Principal Park in Des Moines was officially ruled a 6-6 tie after 10 innings due to a predetermined time limit which would allow the Beavers to make it to the airport. Iowa’s Jaixen Frost had tied the game in the bottom of the tenth with a solo homer to left.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller who says the coaches discussed and agreed upon the time limit before the game.

The ending spoiled a brilliant start on the mound by Hawkeye senior Ben DeTaeye. With regular Sunday starter Reese Beuter scratched with an elbow injury, DeTaeye responded by tossing five hit-less innings. He was lifted in the sixth inning with two runners on and nobody out and the Hawkeyes leading 3-0.

DeTaeye was notified on Saturday night that he would be making just his second start of the season in Principal Park against the 10th ranked team in the country.

Iowa was looking to avoid a sweep of the three game series that drew more than 15 thousand fans.

Heller says a decision on whether Beuter will be able to start Saturday’s game against fifth ranked Oregon will be made some time this week.

The Hawkeyes host the Ducks in a three game series beginning Thursday and with two wins will clinch at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title.

Hawkeyes Close Out Cyclone Twilight

Sports

May 10th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team wrapped up its regular season at the Cyclone Twilight in Ames on Friday.

“Today was a great tune-up meet as we head into the Big Ten Championships next week,” said Director of Track and Field Joey Woody. “I was really pleased with how well Kai (Graves-Blanks) competed—running back-to-back wind-legal personal bests, which sets him up well for next weekend. Kalil (Johnson) also put together two strong races and is very close to a big breakthrough. It was great to see Lily (Johannes) come away with another personal best tonight. Carson Houg had a terrific race. Unfortunately he got tripped up with about 80 meters to go, which cost him a 3:48–3:49 finish. But he stayed on his feet and competed very well to the finish.”

Sophomore Kai Graves-Blanks cruised through the 110-meter hurdle prelims with a time of 13.61, ranking seventh all-time in program history. He returned in the finals to claim gold, improving his mark to 13.59. Teammates Kalil Johnson and Drew Dillard also reached the finals, finishing fourth (14.23) and seventh (14.67), respectively.

In the men’s triple jump, sophomore Precious Irivi earned an event victory with a leap of 14.73 meters.

The Hawkeyes recorded six personal bests on the day. Freshman Braedin Zondervan clocked a 47.82 in the men’s 400 meters to finish third. Juniors Alexandria Edison, Lily Johannes and Isabelle Woody also notched career bests in their respective events.

In the women’s 1,500 meters, the entire Hawkeye squad posted career-best times. Freshman Julia Gehl led the group with a 10th-place finish in 4:38.09. Juniors Rowan Boulter (4:50.01) and Ellie Rathe (4:57.74) also achieved personal-best marks.

Up Next: The Hawkeyes head to Eugene, Oregon, for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Competition begins Friday, May 16, and continues through Sunday, May 18.

Hawkeyes Fall to Beavers in Series Opener

Sports

May 10th, 2025 by Christian Adams

DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to No. 10 Oregon State, 9-6, on Friday night at Principal Park.

The Hawkeyes hit .270 and totaled nine hits to the Beavers’ 10. Nine Hawkeyes were left on base.

“Our offense, I was really proud of those guys,” said head coach Rick Heller. “The way Oregon State scored their runs early on a Friday night, a lot of teams would have went away and probably ended up in a 10-run rule or something, but we fought back.”

Oregon State (36-12) scored two unearned runs in the third and plated four more in the fourth. The Hawkeyes answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs as Caleb Wulf singled in a run and Miles Risley batted in two.

Iowa (32-16, 21-6) cut its deficit in half in the fifth after Ben Wilmes doubled and scored on a Reese Moore single. The Hawkeyes knotted the game at six when Gable Mitchell hit a two-run bomb over the right-field wall in the seventh.

The Beavers took back the lead in the next frame, scoring three runs on a single and an error.

LHP Cade Obermueller started on the mound. He gave up three runs (two unearned) on three hits and struck out five.

“Cade’s errors I think got him going fast and took him out of his game. He wasn’t as sharp after that,” said Heller. “That one inning, it put us in a pinch because he was getting close to 36, 37 pitches, maybe even 40. It felt like we needed to take him out, but it’s Friday night, so you don’t want to take him out. But you also have to make sure he’s rested for next Thursday. Having to go to the bullpen against them that early was not in the plans.”

RHP Sam Hart was the first reliever out of the bullpen. He gave up three runs. Justin Hackett pitched for the next three innings, giving up zero runs on zero hits while striking out seven. Anthony Watts then entered the game and gave up Oregon State’s final three runs (two unearned). Chas Wheatley pitched in the ninth, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three.

The Iowa pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts and seven free bases.

“Tonight was the pitcher errors. You’re not going to overcome three pitcher errors and give up six runs against Oregon State. We eliminate those, we probably win 6-4,” said Heller. “You’re just not going to win if that happens against anybody.”

Up Next

The Hawkeyes and Beavers will continue the series with game two tomorrow at 3:35 p.m. (CDT) at Principal Park. RHP Aaron Savary will start on the hill for Iowa. He is 7-0 this season with a 3.36 ERA. The game will be broadcast on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
