Griswold Baseball Set for Season to Begin

Sports

May 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Griswold Baseball team is looking strong in the preseason according to Head Coach Ryan Lockwood. The Tigers have a few key returners along with some underclassmen who will look to contribute. In the early stages of preseason, Lockwood says his team is ready to roll.

Lockwood says having a bigger roster this year will allow him to be flexible day in and day out.

The Tigers will rely on Senior Bode Wyman both from the plate and the mound this Spring. Wyman will be considered the team’s ace once again this season.

Wyman collected a 3.20 earned run average while striking out 49 hitters in 39 innings tossed a season ago. Lockwood will also look to Brayden Lockwood who will be another top arm for the Tigers.

On the offensive side, Griswold returns their top two hitters in Wyman and Senior Zane Johnson. Lockwood says Johnson will bring the power to the Tiger lineup.

The Tigers search for their first winning season in nine seasons and the way Griswold plays the game and the experience they have could lead them in the right direction.

Griswold opens the season Monday Monday, May 19th on the road at Atlantic.

NASCAR driver Cole Custer makes a stop in Central Iowa

Sports

May 15th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

A NASCAR driver made a stop in Central Iowa leading up to the return of the Cup Series to the Iowa Speedway this summer.
Cole Custer says it is important to give back to the fans who support their sport. The cup series driver threw out the first pitch at an Iowa Cubs game in Des Moines and also made a stop at an elementary school in Newton.

At the school, the 27-year old Custer fielded questions from third graders, including, have you ever been on fire?

Custer has fond memories of the Iowa Speedway. He won a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at the track back in 2013 as a 15-year-old.

Custers says the Iowa Speeway fits his style of driving. He finished sixth in the Xfinity Series race at the track last year.

Three Cyclones Corral NFCA All-Midwest Honors

Sports

May 15th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – A trio of Iowa State players have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Midwest All-Region Team, the organization announced Thursday afternoon. The Midwest Region consists of 31 teams, 16 of which were represented among the 38 student-athlete recipients.
Tatum Johnson (First Team – OF), Jessie Clemons (Second Team – DP/UTL) and Angelina Allen (Third Team – OF) all collected postseason recognitions for the Cyclones, marking the 13th-consecutive season that ISU has had at least one player honored by the NFCA.
Iowa State’s three All-Region recipients ties for the third-most Cyclone student-athletes honored in a single season (four is the program high, achieved in both 2014 and 2021). It is the first time, however, that ISU has had a representative on all three All-Region teams.
Johnson, a Chino Hills, California native, slashed .353/.500/.605 in her first full season as a collegiate outfielder as she led the team in both on-base and slugging percentage. Johnson had a career year after making the swap from a full-time pitcher to an everyday fielder, as she set season bests in every offensive category across the board.
Johnon’s First Team nod marks the second-straight year that Iowa State has had a First Team outfielder. She joins teammate and 2025 Third Team All-Region member Angelina Allen, who earned the distinction last season.
Allen, a senior from Moreno Valley, California, followed her 2024 First Team All-Region campaign with a solid 2025 outing as she bat .354 with 57 hits, 11 doubles and a team-high three triples with 28 walks. She finished her career with the third-most hits in ISU history (219) and leaves Ames as one of the best to ever do it.
Sandwiched between Johnson’s First Team and Allen’s Third Team honors is freshman Jessie Clemons, who became the first ISU rookie since Milaysia Ochoa in 2021 to be honored with an NFCA postseason designation. Her Second Team honor is the highest NFCA recognition awarded to an Iowa State freshman since Sami Williams made the First Team in her first season back in 2017.
Clemons made the Second Team as a DP/Utility player thanks to her versatility on the field in 2025. In total, Clemons made starts at first base (17), second base (1), shortstop (16), center field (8), right field (11) and designated player (1). In her first collegiate season, Clemons led ISU in batting average (.367), hits (65), doubles (13) and RBI (36).
NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated student-athletes and voted for the teams. All awarded student-athletes now become eligible for the 2025 NFCA Division I All-America squads. The NFCA Division I All-America teams, voted on by the NFCA DI All-American Committee, will be announced at a later date.
