Iowa advances at B1G baseball tournament

Sports

May 22nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa hung on to advance at the Big Ten baseball tournament in Omaha.

John Leo on the Hawkeye Network. Iowa scored three runs in the first and got seven scoreless innings from starting pitcher Cade Obermueller to beat Rutgers 4-3. The win clinches a spot in Saturday’s semifinal round.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller who says it was a big win for a team that stumbled down the stretch of the regular season.

The Hawkeyes play regular season co-champ UCLA in Saturday’s semifinals. They have a game tonight against an Indiana team that has already been eliminated and Heller says he will use the game to line up his pitching for this weekend.

Obermueller tossed seven innings and gave up only four hits while striking out 10 after struggling in his last few starts.

Obermueller says the early run support was key.

Griswold Softball Set for 2025 Season

Sports

May 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

Success has been a very familiar concept in the Griswold softball’s recent history. The Tigers come into 2025 after four consecutive 20+ winning seasons and 26 wins in three of the last four campaigns. Head Coach Jody Rossell says she will retain lots of talent from a year ago.

Griswold relied on two pitchers last season and both of them graduated in the offseason. Expect to see new faces in the circle for the Tigers but she believes they are ready to compete.

Wahlert was CAM’s ace a year ago as an eighth grader throwing 111 innings and filing a 3.08 earned run average. Despite new arms on the pitching for the Tigers, they return their top hitter a year ago in Marissa Askeland who hit a staggering .468. The senior led the team in doubles, runs driven in and walks as well. Rossell says she feels blessed to have so much offensive power returning.

The Tigers have come up a game shy of a trip to the state tournament in the previous two season, however Rossell says it is all about just being the best versions of themselves possible.

Griswold and CAM are teaming up this year on the diamond in a co-op and the new bond has been going smooth as can be says Rossell.

The Tigers begin their journey to get that state tournament berth Tuesday in a home matchup against East Mills.

Iowa State to Face Northwestern in Home and Home Exhibition Games

Sports

May 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball team will face Northwestern in its second exhibition game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Hilton Coliseum. It will be the first in a home and home exhibition game, as the two teams will meet in Evanston, Ill. in Oct. 2026.

The exhibition game will be the first in Hilton Coliseum for the men’s program since 2017, when the Cyclones beat Emporia State 77-68. Iowa State will open the preseason slate the week prior with an exhibition game at Creighton on Friday, Oct. 17. This will mark the first time the Cyclones have played two exhibition games in a season since 2009 when Iowa State beat Black Hills State (96-47) and UNC Pembroke (106-54).

While this game will not count in the regular season record, the two teams are even 1-1 in the all-time series. Iowa State beat Northwestern 64-54 in Ames in 1949, while the Wildcats beat the Cyclones 67-65 in the championship game of the 2009 Chicago Invitational.

The Cyclones are coming off a 25-10 campaign in 2024-25 with a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats went 17-16, ending the season in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. In ESPN’s Way Too Early Top 25, the Cyclones are ranked No. 13.

Tipoff and TV designation will be announced at a later time. Tickets to the game will be part of the 2025-26 season ticket package, with more details available later this summer.
