IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field has qualified 34 entries (17 men’s, 17 women’s) to the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West first rounds in College Station, Texas, on May 28-31. The four-day meet takes place at E.B. Cushing Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.

Former Cyclone Jordan Silkowitz Called Up to U-23 USWNT Roster

Sports

May 23rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State legend Jordan Silkowitz has been chosen to compete for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team, the organization announced.
Silkowitz will take part in a training camp for a pair of upcoming competitions in Stuttgart (Germany) against Germany. Silkowitz and the U-23 squad will play on both May 30 and June 2.
Silkowitz, in her third season in the NWSL, was Iowa State’s first-ever draft pick and has played for both the KC Current as well as her present-day team, Bay FC. The call-up is the first of her career to a national team/program at any level.
Born in 2000, Silkowitz is one of five “overage players” selected to the roster per U.S. Soccer’s agreement with Germany. She is one of 16 NWSL players selected to the roster and one of two goalkeepers alongside Angel City FC goalkeeper Angelina Anderson.
The camp will be led by University of New Mexico head coach Heather Dyche, along with assistant coaches Yolanda Thomas from Orlando Pride, former USWNT player and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Cox, and long-time U.S. Youth National Team and former San Diego Wave goalkeeper coach Louis Hunt.
Silkowitz totaled 234 saves as a Cyclone, and her 1.44 goals-against average is the third lowest in program history. In just three seasons as a Cyclone, Silkowitz totaled 10 shutouts – good enough for the third-most in school annals.

Hawkeyes Shutout by Hoosiers to Close B1G Pool Play

Sports

May 23rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

OMAHA, Nebraska – The third-seeded University of Iowa baseball team fell to sixth-seeded Indiana, 5-0, to close out pool play in the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field on Thursday night.
The Hawkeyes have been shutout twice this season, with both coming in the last five games.
Iowa’s biggest threat to score came in the first inning, but the Hawkeyes left the bases loaded. Iowa totaled five hits and batted .152 overall, stranding nine base runners.
“Offensively, we knew it was going to be a challenging night with Gilley and Grable both able to throw,” said Heller. “Gilley gave us a chance in the first to jump out on top with the bases loaded. We had an opportunity with a runner on third and less than two outs, and we didn’t get him home. We hit a lot of fly balls, which is pretty uncharacteristic for this team, and it led to a lot of 1-2-3 innings.”
Indiana (32-24, 16-14) took the lead in the third inning with a three-run shot to right field. The Hoosiers added two more in the fourth to make it 5-0.
Iowa (33-21-1, 21-9) had its first extra base hit of the tournament when Gable Mitchell doubled in the eighth inning. Caleb Wulf was the lone Hawkeye to have a multi-hit game with two of Iowa’s five total hits on the night.
LHP Ben DeTaeye got the nod on the hill and was dinged with the loss. He gave up three runs on one hit, walked three and struck out four over 2 1/3 innings of work.
“DeTaeye gave us a good start,” said Heller. “He was really good the first two innings, and his pitch count was down, so we decided to go a third inning. He strikes out the first guy, then he walks two to get to Taylor and first pitch he hits a home run and we are down three runs on one hit.”
Five other Hawkeye hurlers made appearances on the mound. The pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and 12 free bases.
“For the most part, the rest of the guys did a pretty decent job,” said Heller. “We worked out of a couple jams.”

The Hawkeyes will face second-seeded UCLA in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CDT). The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Iowa baseball to play No. 13 UCLA in B1G semifinals

Sports

May 23rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller says Cade Obermueller could return to the mound if the Hawkeyes make it to Sunday’s championship game at the Big Ten baseball tournament in Omaha. Obernueller tossed seven scoreless innings on Wednesday night in the Hawkeyes 4-3 win over Rutgers.

The Hawkeyes play 13th ranked UCLA in Saturday’s semifinal round. Heller says having played fourth ranked Oregon and seventh ranked Oregon State the last two weeks will be good preparation.

Heller says against elite teams mistakes become magnified.

The Hawkeyes were blanked by Indiana 5-0 on Thursday night to close out pool play.

Iowa’s state track meet turns 20

Sports

May 23rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa High School Track and Field Championships is one of top track meets in the country but it was born out of necessity, Prior to 2005, the boys association and the girls union held their state meets on separate weekends. In 2005 the meets combined to accommodate the renovation schedule at Drake Stadium. IHSAA executive director Tom Keating was a first year high school principal for the first coed meet.

The meet has become so successful that it regularly draws more than 35 thousand fans over three days.

Iowa’s state meet regularly leads the nation in attendance.

The meet is currently operating under a three year contract and Keating sees no reason why it won’t continue.

Jason Eslinger is senior associate director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. He was the publications director in 2005 for the first combined meet.

Eslinger says before the first day was done in 2005 they knew they had something special.

It has become the biggest high school track meet in the country.

Eslinger believes the combined meet is too good to do away with.

Nodaway Valley’s Trenton Warner Wins State Shot Put Title

Sports

May 22nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

Day one was a successful one for Nodaway Valley’s Trenton Warner, as he is now a state champion. Warner won the event on his very first throw. A hurl going 53-11.75, which stood the test. The throw ended up beating Coon Rapids-Bayards’ Cal Heydon by more than a foot. Although he wasn’t sure the throw was a winner, he said it felt good.

He also fed off the crowd.

As a senior, it was significant for him to go out on top.

Warner’s effort helped lift the Wolverines to second place at the end of day one.
