Atlantic Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Harlan

Sports

June 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojan Softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Harlan Cyclones on Monday night. In game one, the offense took over early and often. Put together with a perfect performance on the mound, the Trojans cruised to a 12-0 victory. Although the offense was a little more subdued in game two, it was still more than enough to get the job done while a duo of Trojan pitchers held firm to give Atlantic an 8-1 win in game two.

Despite the offense being the story of game one, the opening inning belonged to the pitchers. Camryn Goshorn retired the Trojans in order, while Zoey Kirchhoff returned the favor to the Cyclones. It was the second inning that kicked-started the Trojan offense. Jillian Saathoff started the rally with a double (her first of three hits in game one). The next two Trojans would reach base safely before Makenna Schroeder knocked in her first of two RBIs to put Atlantic up 3-0. The next at bat, Lila Wiederstein hit the first of four Trojan homers to open up a five-run lead.

The Trojans added three more long bombs in the third. Kirchhoff, Saathoff, and Peyton McLaren all sent balls over the fence. In addition to a Wiederstein double and a McKenna Sonntag single, the Trojans took a commanding 12-0 lead.

Where the offensive performance was explosive, the pitching performance from Zoey Kirchhoff was clinical. Her ability to change speeds set up her rise-ball, and she was largely untouchable. Putting up a perfect four innings, Kirchhoff collected six strikeouts en route to a shutout win.

Unlike game one, Atlantic scored in the opening inning of game two. Wiederstein led off with a triple and was driven in the following at-bat by Dylin Ball. Despite the early start, the Trojans would be held at bay by Lauren Schmitz. It wasn’t until the fourth that Atlantic would score four straight baserunners. This included Wiederstein’s fourth RBI of the day.

On the mound, the tag team of Peyton McLaren and Brynn Lamp were more than capable of holding off the Cyclones. McLaren started the ball game and was nearly perfect. Working four innings, she gave up just a single hit in the fourth representing Harlan’s first baserunner of the day. Although she struggled at times with location, she battled back in counts numerous times and ended her outing with six strikeouts. Brynn Lamp came in to close the door. Despite giving up four hits, she was able to limit the damage to just one run as the Trojans walked away from Harlan with two wins.

All in all, it was a very solid night for the Trojans. Wiederstein went 4-for-7 with 5 RBIs, Saathoff went 3-for-5 with 2 extra-base hits, and Makenna Schroeder went 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Although there are some things to work on, it was a good showing for the Trojans in a series they’ve dominated of late.  The Pair of wins moved the Trojans to 6-1 on the season. Up next is a highly anticipated ranked matchup with Creston Tuesday night. The matchup is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Creston.

AHSTW Softball Season Underway

Sports

June 2nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The AHSTW softball season is underway. Although, the Vikings have dropped their first two games of the season, Head Coach Kathleen Pace says things may look different this season and it is about figuring out works best for her team.

The Vikings have 14 on the roster this season. Newcomer to the team, Senior Sienna Christian is a two-way player for the Vikings. Hurling a 2.45 era and has two hits in six at-bats has already made a big impact.

With just two seniors on the roster, many underclassmen and even eighth graders are stepping up in a big way.

The Vikings are back home Tuesday in a matchup with Missouri Valley, looking to get their first win of the season.

Miles Greig Announces Hiring of Estrella and Wise

Sports

June 2nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Coach Ashley Miles Greig announced a pair of additions to her coaching staff Monday morning, naming both Jazmyn Estrella and Mary Wise as assistant coaches.
Estrella, a former collegiate gymnast at both Utah State (2017-18) and Temple (2019-20), has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the University of New Hampshire. Prior to her years with the Wildcats, Estrella got her start in coaching with her alma mater, serving as Temple’s volunteer assistant during the 2023 campaign.
“I am beyond thrilled to welcome Jazmyn Estrella to the Cyclone family,” said Miles Greig. “She brings an impressive coaching background and a proven ability to build strong relationships with student-athletes. Jazmyn shares our vision for the future of Iowa State Gymnastics, and her unique skills and passion for the sport will be a tremendous asset to our program moving forward.”
A decorated collegiate gymnast, Estrella earned her degree in Adult and Organizational Development from Temple. During her time as an Owl gymnast, Estrella set the program record with her performance on uneven bars, scoring a 9.95. As part of her two years as an athlete at Temple, Estrella helped the team win back-to-back ECAC Championships and was an All-ECAC performer on vault, bars and beam.
“I am so unbelievably excited to join the Iowa State coaching staff,” said Estrella. “Through all of my conversations with Coach Miles Greig, it was clear that she has a strong vision and is committed to excellence both in and out of the gym. I’m grateful for the opportunity to support her and contribute to the continued success and excellence of the program. The future of Cyclone Gymnastics is bright, and I am so grateful to be a part of it.”
Wise will bring over 20 years of experience to the Cyclones, having coached multiple current/former collegiate gymnasts. Most recently, she served as a team coach for the Air Force Gymnastics Academy. Wise is not new to the state of Iowa, as she spent 13 years (2009-21) as a Coach with Iowa Gym-Nest in Coralville.
“I take great pleasure in having Mary Wise join my coaching staff,” said Miles Greig. “With over two decades of experience at the highest levels of the sport, she brings a wealth of knowledge that will be instrumental as we continue striving to build a championship-level program. Her love of the sport and positive energy will be a tremendous addition to our team.”

Wise graduated from UW-La Crosse in 2005 with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science/Spanish. She spent her senior year helping the gymnastics team as a student assistant, as the Eagles went on to win the NCGA team title.
“I’m thrilled to begin my collegiate gymnastics coaching career at Iowa State,” said Wise. “College coaching has always been a goal of mine, and Iowa State immediately felt like home. I’m excited to be part of the strong coaching staff that Ashley is building, as well as a bright future for Cyclone Gymnastics.”

Defending champ to return to the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities

Sports

June 2nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The PGA Tour returns to the Quad Cities next month for the John Deere Classic and Davis Thompson will be back to try and defend his title. Thompson won with a tournament record 28-under par. It was his first and so far only PGA win.

Winning on the PGA Tour is career changing and opens up a lot of opportunities. It also serves to raise expectations.

Thompson’s best result this season was a tie for 10th at the Players Championship back in March.

Winning in the Quad Cities has allowed Thompson to play in major events like the British Open and the Masters.

The John Deere Classic is July third through the sixth. Also, Deere and Company announced it has extended its agreement to remain title sponsor of the event though 2030.

Director of PCC talks about the future of the tournament

Sports

June 2nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The director of the Principal Charity Classic says the tournament has a bright future in Des Moines. Principal Financial has served as title sponsor since 2007 and the Wakonda Club has hosted the PGA Tour Champions event since 2013.

That’s Alex McCarty who says the tournament has become a popular stop for many of the top names on the tour.

The tour could have a notable rookie class next year. Cedar Rapids native and two-time major winner Zach Johnson turns 50 next February while Tiger Woods will turn 50 in late December.

McCarty says they are hopeful to get Johnson to play in Des Moines.
