NASCAR drivers conduct tire tests at Iowa Speedway

Sports

June 3rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch is one of three drivers conducting two days of tire testing at the Iowa Speedway leading up to the August third Iowa Corn 350. The goal is to help Goodyear to provide the information needed to find the ideal compound.

Weather limited the drivers to about two and a half hours on the track on Tuesday and Busch says it can take several hours to get the answers.

Chase Briscoe won an Xfinity Series race at Iowa in 2019. He finished 28th a year ago in the Cup Series debut at the track.

Briscoe says calculations are made on how the tire will react when the racing begins.

Briscoe is looking forward to returning with the Cup Series.

Austin Cindric has a win at Talladega this season and says the drivers used several different types of tires.

Cindric says getting early track time can be a plus when race weekend arrives.

Second Phase of Duane Banks Field Renovation Up for Regents’ Approval

Sports

June 3rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Athletics Department plans to continue renovating Duane Banks Field, the home of the University of Iowa baseball team, pending approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, next week.

The second phase of a donor-funded project to improve the game-day experience would consist of reconstructing the press box, adding new seating, and other improvements, including an ADA-compliant restroom and ramp to connect the new clubhouse and the first base line grandstand.

A new seating bowl will be added between the two main fan entrances and a new aluminum bleacher system will be constructed in the main grandstand seating area with a new press box positioned atop the seating bowl. A new cable-tension ball netting system spanning the entire distance of the existing and new grandstands will be installed.

“We are excited to move forward with the next phase of our stadium renovation,” said Iowa head baseball coach Rick Heller. “This phase will improve the stadium seating behind home plate and bring us a new press box with modern amenities.”

The planned $5.8 million project will be funded by gifts to the Department of Athletics. If approved, construction would begin the summer of 2026.

For additional information on the baseball stadium campaign visit hawkeyesports.com/revitalize-duane-banks-field.

The Hawkeyes have advanced to the postseason in each of the last 10 seasons under Heller. Iowa has averaged 32 wins per year under Heller’s leadership, appearing in three NCAA Regionals and claiming the first Big Ten Tournament title in program history. Since 2015, Iowa is 180-55 in games played at Duane Banks Field.

The university has committed to investing in Duane Banks Field since its inception in 1974. In 2002, former Hawkeye and former major leaguer Cal Eldred donated funds for the installation of lights. From 2014-15, the field surface was replaced by AstroTurf and a state-of-the-art videoboard was installed. The most recent phase of renovations in 2024-25 saw new AstroTurf installed on the field, as well as the construction of a new clubhouse and batting cages.

The planned renovations will elevate the overall experiences for players, coaches, spectators and media.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Auburn transfer Emma Tothová has signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Iowa tennis program, it was announced Monday by head coach Sasha Boros.  She will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Hawkeyes.

During her freshman season with the Tigers, Tothová recorded six singles and three doubles victories.  Three of her singles wins came in duals competing on courts four, five and six.

“I am incredibly thankful for everything I’ve experienced so far, and I’m beyond excited to continue my journey with the Iowa Hawkeyes,” said Tothová. “I can’t wait to grow as both a player and a person, and I’m ready to give it my all on and off the court.”

Tothová, a native of Bratislava, Slovakia, represented her country in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup, adding international experience to her resume. As a junior, she claimed two ITF doubles titles in 2021 and reached a career-high ITF junior ranking of No. 392. She also earned a WTA singles ranking of No. 716.

“I am thrilled to welcome Emma to Iowa tennis,” said Boros. “She is a fantastic addition to our program in every way. She is a talented player with immense experience and success.  She will make a positive impact both on and off the court in Hawkeye athletics. I can’t wait to start the season and get back on court with our team.”

Tothová attended Galileo Economy High School in Slovakia.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2025 season with a 13-11 overall record and earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2010.
