Bergstrom-Te Slaa and Loyim Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors

Sports

June 17th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – A pair of Cyclone gymnasts were named to the CSC Academic All-District At-Large Team Tuesday morning, marking the first time in program history two Cyclones achieved the honor in the same season.
Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa earned the honor for the second time in as many seasons, while Hannah Loyim earned the recognition for the first time in her career.
Bergstrom-Te Slaa becomes just the second Cyclone gymnast to earn multiple CSC Academic All-District honors in their career, joining Kim Mazza (1996 & 1997). It’s also the first time since 1996/97 that ISU has had gymnasts honored in consecutive seasons.
Both Loyim and Bergstrom-Te Slaa competed as all-around gymnasts for the Cyclones in 2025, with each ranking in the top 65 all-arounders nationally. Loyim held the highest average score on all-around, averaging a 38.875. Loyim competed in all but two meets for the Cyclones, as she collected one event win (bars vs. Simpson) on the year.
In her first year as an all-around competitor, Bergstrom-Te Slaa continued to lead by example for the Cyclones, as the senior recorded seven event titles in her final year in Ames. Josie averaged a 38.855 as an all-around competitor, standing out in vault and beam. Three of her seven wins came on vault, whereas the other four came on beam.
The 2025 Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

College World Series – Monday Scores/Tuesday Schedule

Sports

June 17th, 2025 by Jim Field

Arkansas 3, Murray State 0

Gage Wood has made history.

The junior right-hander threw the third no-hitter in MCWS history, and the first since 1960, beating Murray State, 3-0. Not allowing a hit and striking out 19, a MCWS record, the historic performance kept Arkansas’ season alive in the 2025 Men’s College World Series.

Wood allowed just one baserunner the entire contest, on a hit by pitch in the eighth inning, across his 119-pitch complete game.

Arkansas will move on to face the loser of Monday night’s game between UCLA and LSU on Tuesday.

LSU 5, UCLA 3 (suspended)

The LSU and UCLA contest has been suspended for the rest of the night due to severe weather. The game will be resumed at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday.

The Tigers lead 5-3 in the top of the fourth.

The contest was entering the fourth inning when LSU players were pulled off the field at 8:20 p.m. in preparation for the severe weather. The game never resumed after that.

Tuesday’s game schedule will continue as planned. Oregon State and Louisville will play at 1 p.m., while the loser of LSU and UCLA will play Arkansas at 6 p.m.

Fannon Tabs Ackerman as Assistant Coach

Sports

June 17th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head soccer coach Matt Fannon has announced the hiring of Jaycie Ackerman, who has been named assistant coach.
“Jaycie brings so much experience in the game at the top level as a brilliant player, with knowledge of the coaching requirements of the Big 12,” said Fannon. “We looked so specifically at what we felt we needed with this role and Jaycie will be spot on.”
Ackerman, formerly Jaycie Johnson, is no stranger to the Big 12. The former standout athlete at Nebraska has coached at both Kansas (2023) and Kansas State (2024) since retiring from her professional playing career in the NWSL.
Prior to her time as an assistant coach in the Big 12, Ackerman spent five seasons playing in the NWSL after being selected 27th overall in the 2017 draft by the North Carolina Courage.
Ackerman spent the first year of her pro career in Carolina before spending the next two with the OL Reign (2018-19) before finishing up with the KC Current (2021-22). During the COVID season (2020), Ackerman returned to her alma mater and worked as a volunteer assistant with the Cornhusker soccer program.
Ackerman was a star with the Cornhusker program from 2013-16, where she helped lead Nebraska to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths (13 & 16). Ackerman became the first freshman in NCAA history to score four goals in a tournament game with her performance against Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 15, 2013. As a senior in 2016 at Nebraska, Ackerman was named a Third-Team NSCAA All-American, a First-Team NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region selection and earned a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team.
The Iowa State soccer program will officially kick off its fall campaign on August 14 when it hosts the Portland State Vikings. ISU and PSU will square off on opening day at 6 p.m.

Atlantic Baseball Defeats Kuemper Catholic 7-3

Sports

June 16th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic baseball team defeated Kuemper Catholic 7-3 Monday night in what was supposed to be a doubleheader, turned into just one due to severe storms. Junior Hudson McLaren pitched a complete game allowing three runs and striking out eleven. Atlantic fueled their seven runs on nine hits, and a three-run fourth inning.

The Trojans scored twice in the top of the first. Junior Kale Jenson drew a one-out walk followed by a Gavin McLaren single. A throwing error by the Knight’s catcher allowed Jensen to score, while McLaren was driven in by a Zayden Parker groundout. The bottom of the order produced in the second with base hits from the seven and nine hitters in the order. After two, Atlantic had the lead 2-0.

McLaren faced the minimum through three innings striking out eight hitters. The Trojans began the fourth with three free passes to load the bases up with no outs. Jensen did his part with a sacrifice fly to left field, but the highlight of the inning was the Gavin McLaren two-run double scoring the remaining baserunners. After four, Atlantic led 6-0.

The Trojans were able to scrap another one across in the sixth as well and gave McLaren a seven-run cushion late in the game. The junior ace had six perfect innings before a leadoff base hit ended the streak in the seventh. The Knights had too little too late and Atlantic hung on for the road victory.

The Trojans are back at home against Clarinda Tuesday evening.

Former Iowa State star Breece Hall prepares for the new season with the New York Jets

Sports

June 16th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa State star Breece Hall is motivated to prove he is still the go to running back with the New York Jets. Hall led the Jets with 876 yards on the ground last season but his carries and receptions were down as the Jets slumped to a 5-12 record.

New head coach Aaron Glenn brought in new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, who was also part of the staff with the Detroit Lions.

Hall says last season was frustrating.

Hall on his motivation as he gets ready for his fourth season in the NFL.
