Guard Brendan Hausen on his transfer to Iowa basketball

Sports

June 22nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa guard Brendan Hausen has bought in to the challenge of getting the Hawkeye program back to the NCAA Tournament. Hausen transferred to Iowa after spending last season at Kansas State, where he averaged just under 11 points per game and shot nearly 39 percent from three point range.

Hausen says Hawkeye coach Ben McCollum told him the truth while making his pitch.

Iowa is Hausen’s third stop. He spent his first two years playing at Villanova.

Audubon Baseball Drops Tight Ballgame to Treynor

Sports

June 20th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Audubon Wheelers dropped a tight, well-played ball game to the Treynor Cardinals 5-2 in Audubon Friday night. Both starting pitchers were excellent, stranding multiple baserunners early. Despite the good pitching early, the difference in the game was numerous walks in the final two frames. Down four, Audubon threatened in the bottom of the seventh but was only able to push across a single run.

Coming into the game, Audubon had been playing their best baseball of the season, winning four of their last five. It was clear from the outset that this trend would continue. After Aaron Olsen stranded two in scoring position in the first, Audubon struck first. Brody Schultes (who reached base in all four plate appearances despite not earning a hit) reached on error and was driven in by an RBI single from Carson Wessel. Unfortunately for Audubon, Ethan Hill was lights out the rest of his outing. Throwing 5.2 innings, he allowed just one unearned run and struck out nine Wheelers. He also limited baserunners, allowing just three in his final three innings.

Aaron Olsen was nearly as good for Audubon. Despite giving up a run in the second, he stranded two more in scoring position, then retired the side in order in the third. Although he gave up another run in the fourth, he kept the Wheelers in the ball game, leaving down by two and handing the ball to Jack Stanerson. The Treynor bats weren’t much more explosive, but they were patient. Two of the next three Treynor runs were a result of walks. However, Stanerson battled, and after having a rough start to the sixth, struck out the side.

Down 5-1 with three outs remaining, the Wheelers put the pressure on the Cardinals. Adam Obrecht and Ryan Hermansen lead off with back-to-back base hits while Jack Stanerson walked to load the bases. Schultes drove home Obrecht by hitting into a fielder’s choice, but that was all the Wheelers could muster. Despite the loss, Audubon played well, continuing their run of improvement and head coach Eric Borkowski was pleased with the way his team performed.

He was also impressed with the performance Olsen put together.

The Wheelers will head out on the road Monday to take on the top ranked 2A team in Underwood. Borkowski hinted that some younger players might start to see some varsity time.

The loss drops the Wheelers to 5-11 while Treynor now 11-6 will return home to face AHSTW Monday night.

Mason Williams Has Successful Hip Surgery

Sports

June 20th, 2025 by Christian Adams

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Mason Williams underwent successful surgery on his hip earlier this week. The surgery was the result of a preexisting injury. Williams will likely miss the 2025-26 season.

Williams is a 6-5 guard out of Seattle who prepped at O’Dea. Williams played the last two seasons for Eastern Washington. He started 22 of the 27 games he played in for the Eagles last season, missing five games with an injury early in the season. He averaged a career-best 13.9 points to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. He ranked ninth in the Big Sky in scoring last season, while being second in the league in free throw percentage at 83.7 percent.

In 44 career games played, Williams averaged 10.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from downtown.

Atlantic Softball Hitting Stride Halfway Through Season

Sports

June 20th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic softball team is finding its groove as they reach the midway point of the season. The Trojans sit at 16-8 and riding a six-game winning streak. Head Coach Terry Hinzmann says his group is playing better, but this isn’t their apex.

Atlantic is fueled by two dominant pitchers in Sophomore Peyton McLaren and Junior Zoey Kirkhhoff as they are both firing an under 3.00 ERA. Hinzmann has had the luxury of being able to split several games between the two of them in the circle.

On the hitting side, the Trojans are hitting .325 as a team and three everyday starters hitting over .400. Junior Lila Wiederstein leads the team in many offensive categories as she puts up one of the better seasons across Iowa so far.

Wiederstein has been in the DP spot lately due to a lingering lower body issue from track season but hasn’t stopped her from giving it her all.

The Trojans are in Fort Dodge this weekend playing stiff competition and after that return home Monday in a doubleheader against St. Albert.

Atlantic Baseball Falls to Kuemper Catholic 3-0

Sports

June 20th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic baseball team fell to the Kuemper Catholic Knights 3-0 Friday afternoon. Despite Trojan pitching one-hitting the Kuemper Catholic bats, Juniors Jack Muller and Keston Schmitt issued eleven free passes. Atlantic’s offense on the other hand, were only able to get two hits from their bats.

Head Coach Nathan Block complimented the Kuemper Catholic patience and defensive efforts.

Kuemper Catholic Senior Shortstop Mason Knerl snagged two bullets off Atlantic bats, which prevented two timely hits for the Trojans. The two Atlantic hits came from Hudson McLaren in the third and Collin Harris in the fifth. The Knights opened the scoring in the second inning with Junior Thomas Pottebaum walking home on a balk.

Kuemper Catholic’s lone hit came on an RBI single from Junior Landon Pottebaum scoring Knerl to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Later in the game, Thomas Pottebaum was hit by a pitch to begin the sixth. He would eventually score after a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly. The Knights shut down Atlantic in order to end the game.

Atlantic is back in action at home in a doubleheader vs. St. Albert.

Iowa safety Koen Entringer previews next season

Sports

June 20th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa junior safety Koen Entringer says defensive coordinator Phil Parker has focused on limiting big plays as the Hawkeyes get ready for the new season. Big plays were costly last season as the Hawkeyes finished with an 8-5 record after a loss to Missouri in the Music City Bowl.

Entringer appeared in 12 games last season and made his first career start. He is the expected starter at string safety for next season.

The Hawkeyes open at home on August 30th against the University of Albany.
