Sports

June 23rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa assistant basketball coach Luke Barnwell says his connection to head coach Ben McCollum is why he decided to join the Hawkeye staff. Barnwell spent the past two years on the staff at Texas Tech.

Prior to his time at Texas Tech, Barnwell was the head coach at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas.

Barnwell says summer workouts are a time to build chemistry and start to carve out roles.

Audubon Baseball Stacking Wins in Middle of Season

Sports

June 23rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Audobon baseball team has reached its halfway point in the season and are beginning to stack wins together. The Wheelers have won four of their last six games and are competing at a higher level as the season progresses. Head Coach Eric Borkowski says improvement has been extremely visible.

The Wheelers have three everyday starters hitting over .300 in Juniors Brody Schultes and Senior Adam Obrecht. Schultes is the team leader in walks and triples. Borkowski says the junior’s plate presence is special.

On the mound, Obrecht has thrown as many innings as anyone on the Audubon roster and has struck out 29 hitters while only walking eight.

As the season begins to wire down, Borkowski says their best baseball and highest potential has not been reached yet.

Sports

June 23rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

According to a report late last week, the Missouri River Conference is planning to send invitations to Lewis Central, Harlan, Glenwood and Denison-Schleswig.
Peter Burtnett of the Daily Nonpareil reported on X that the league would extend offers to the four Hawkeye Ten Conference schools with hopes of bringing the conference to 12 schools.
The Missouri River Conference is currently comprised of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson in Council Bluffs, as well as Bishop Heelan Catholic, Sioux City East, Sioux City North and Sioux City West in Sioux City. Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Le Mars are the other two in the eight-school league. The news comes after Shenandoah and Red Oak showed interest in leaving the Hawkeye Ten and accepted their invitation to the Western Iowa Conference.

Iowa State’s Cael Brezina talks about LB depth

Sports

June 23rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa State football team succeeded despite a rash of injuries at linebacker last season. The bright side is now that position group is deep with experienced players. Cael Brezina was forced into action early in his freshman season and made seven starts while battling injuries of his own.

Brezina stepped in after Caleb Bacon was injured in the season opener against North Dakota and Brezina credits Bacon for preparing him to step into the lineup.

Coming off a school record 11 wins confidence is high but Brezina says the Cyclones lost a lot of leadership from last season.

Iowa State opens August 23rd in Dublin, Ireland against Kansas State.

LSU sweeps Coastal Carolina in CWS finals

Sports

June 23rd, 2025 by Jim Field

LSU knocked previously unbeaten Coastal Carolina ace Jacob Morrison out of the game with a four-run fourth inning and the Tigers won their second national title in three years Sunday with a 5-3 victory in the College World Series finals.

The Tigers (53-15) completed a two-game sweep of the Chanticleers (56-13), who entered the finals on a 26-game win streak and on Sunday saw coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling ejected in the bottom of the first inning.

LSU gave the Southeastern Conference its sixth straight national title in baseball and 11th in 16 years. It was LSU’s eighth, all since 1991 and second most all-time behind Southern California’s 12.

LSU coach Jay Johnson became the first Division I coach to win two titles in his first four years at a school. No other coach had accomplished that feat in fewer than eight seasons.
