Iowa defensive back Zach Lutmer is not sure where he will end up in the secondary next season. The sophomore from Central Lyon/George-Little Rock has been spending time at several different positions during summer workouts.
Lutmer played in all 13 games last season and his most likely spots are strong safety or the “cash” position, a hybrid defensive back/linebacker position in the Hawkeyes defense.
The Hawkeyes open August 30th at home against the University of Albany.
The Atlantic Trojans advanced to the regional semi-final Thursday night with a 10-2 win over the Harlan Cyclones. Although the runs didn’t come early, they did come often. After Harlan tied the game in the fourth, the Trojan bats came around. A combination of four hits and a few errors, Atlantic scored six to take control of the ball game. In addition to seven strikeouts, on the mound, Payton McLaren went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Eighth-grader Reese Ball reached base three times, with a pair of RBIs. Zoey Kirchhoff held the Cyclones in the fifth, while a trio of hits and a pair of walks brought home the winning run.
McLaren was excellent in the opening stages. Throwing 4.0 innings, all seven of her strikeouts came in the first three, while allowing just a single hit. At the dish, the Trojans were able to push across a run in each of the first two innings. However, Cyclone pitcher Lauren Schmitz was able to keep the deficit slim before tossing a perfect third.
Using the momentum gained from Schmitz’s third, Harlan’s bats came alive in the fourth. Three consecutive hits, including RBI singles from Suzy Kenkel and Carleigh Goshorn, tied the game at two. However, it wouldn’t stay tied for long. Kickstarted by a Dylin Ball single and aided by a few Harlan errors, Atlantic scored six runs in the inning. McLaren, Reese Ball, McKenna Sonntag, and Lila Wiederstein all drove in runs as the Trojans batted around the order and took control of the game.
Kirchhoff would get through the fifth with relative ease, setting up the Trojans to put away the game. Claire Schroeder led off the inning with a double and was driven in immediately by a McLaren single. Following another single from Jillian Saathoff, back-to-back walks to Reese Ball and Makenna Schroeder brought home the winning run. Head coach Terry Hinzmann was pleased with how McLaren and how she used her stuff.
With the game tied his message was simple.
The win pushed Atlantic to 27-13 on the year and secured a spot in the regional semi-final against Centerville. The Big Reds beat Clarinda on the road 13-9 on Thursday to advance in the Region Eight bracket. Hinzman says the Trojans are stepping a bit into the unknown.
Atlantic will host the matchup scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
After a 1-10 start to the regular season for Atlantic Baseball, they have ended the season on a high note winning four of their last seven. They are set to take on Hawkeye Ten Rival, Harlan Friday in the first round of the Class 3A Substate Tournament. The Cyclones swept the Trojans in a doubleheader on June 2nd. Despite dropping both games, Head Coach Nathan Block believed his team were capable of winning both.
A third time around and the Trojans know what to expect.
Atlantic’s bats have been coming alive as of late. The Trojan offense has put up at least seven runs in five of their last seven games. The Trojan hitters are led by Junior Kale Jensen who is swinging a .444 batting average with a .571 on-base percentage and a team-leading four home runs. On the mound, the Trojans will look to a few different arms in the postseason.
The Trojans look for revenge in a rivalry Harlan leads 30-6 since 2009. First pitch is scheduled for 7 P.M. and will be available to stream on KJANTV.
Iowa senior Jacob Gill believes added experience at wide receiver will help boost the Hawkeye passing game this season. The former Northwestern transfer started all 13 games a year ago and led a passing attack that ranked at the bottom of the Big Ten with 35 receptions.
Gill says year number two under offensive coordinator Tim Lester is a plus.
Wide receiver has long been considered Iowa’s weakest position group but Gill likes the talent and depth in the room.
The Hawkeyes open the season at home on August 30th against the University of Albany.
Drake basketball coach Eric Henderson says the roster is set as he prepares for his first season as Bulldog coach. Henderson brought in 12 new players to join one returning player from a Drake team that posted a school record 31 wins and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament under former coach Ben McCollum.
Drake has won three straight Missouri Valley Conference Tournament titles and Henderson found the program has a great deal of credibility on the recruiting trail.
Henderson feels good about the positional size on the roster. The Bulldogs have four players listed as six-nine or taller.
In the era of the transfer portal experience has added value. Drake has six players listed as juniors or seniors.

Henderson took the Drake job after spending six seasons as the head coach at South Dakota State.
The Griswold-CAM softball team punched its ticket to the regional semi-final with a 6-2 win over the Underwood Eagles Wednesday night. Ailey Wahlert worked a complete game and although she had to work around walks, she only gave up three hits. Offensively, Griswod-CAM put the leadoff batter on base in every inning and used that to score three in the fourth and two in the fifth to take control of the game. Underwood didn’t go away, picking up two in the sixth. However, Wahlert closed the door in the seventh. Although it wasn’t Griswold-CAM’s crispest performance of the season, they made the right plays at the right time and cashed in on their opportunities.
After a scoreless first, Griswold-CAM started the scoring in the second. Keeley Kinney (3-for-3) led off with a base hit and was driven in by a combination of a base hit from Daphna Wahlert and a fielding error. This stood as the only run until the fourth. Once again, Griswold-CAM got the leadoff batter aboard, as Courtney Follman was hit by a pitch. This was immediately followed by a Kinney double into the gap to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, another combination of a hit and an error would bring two across to oush the lead to four. Griswold-CAM would add on in the fifth as Daphna Wahlert drilled a single off the left field wall to bring home Kinney and Ailey Wahlert to give Griswold-CAM a commanding lead.
Down by six, Underwood refused to quit. A furious two-out rally started by Lily McHenry (who reached base safely in all four plate appearances) saw back-to-back singles, back-to-back walks and an error cut Griswold-CAM’s lead to four. However, the Eagles would leave the bases loaded. Although Underwood earned two more walks in the seventh, Ailey Wahlert and Griswold-CAM were able to close out the game. Despite it not being the cleanest of games, in the postseason a win is all the same regardless of how pretty or ugly it is. All in all, it was a very solid effort from Griswold-CAM. Head Coach Jody Rossell was pleased with the team’s effort.
Although Ailey Wahlert didn’t have a perfect outing, she praised her ability to battle.
Overall, Rossell says the message to her team won’t change.
The win punches Griswold-CAM’s ticket to the Region 6 Semi-final. They will go up against a 27-win West Monana team in Griswold at 7 pm on Friday.

Former Iowa star and NFL safety Micah Hyde says he has moved on to the next chapter of his life. After flirting with a return to the Buffalo Bills late last season Hyde officially retired in January. He will be in Iowa City on Friday to host a golf fundraiser for families of patients in the Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
With his playing career over, Hyde is looking forward to returning to Kinnick Stadium next season.
The golf outing will be Friday afternoon at Finkbine golf course. It will include several current and former Hawkeye players and they hope to raise 25 thousand dollars.
During his 11-year NFL career that included stops in Green Bay and Buffalo Hyde was active in the community. That won’t stop just because he is done playing.
Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski is on the field and taking part in summer workouts. Gronowski transferred to Iowa after a standout career at South Dakota State but missed spring drills after undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder.
Gronowski says he was fully cleared at the start of summer.
The Hawkeyes were the top rushing team in Big Ten play last season. Gronowski has been working with offensive coordinator Tim Lester to improve a passing game that ranked at the bottom of the conference.
Gronowski made a trip to the Manning Passing Academy this summer.
An improved receiving corps will help. Sophomore Reece Vander Zee returns after starting eight games as a true freshman.
Injuries limited Seth Anderson to seven games last year. He is looking for a healthy senior season.
The Hawkeyes open on August 30th at home against the University of Albany.
