Iowa kicker Drew Stevens prepares for his final season

Sports

July 16th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Even as he enters his senior season Iowa kicker Drew Stevens feels he still needs to earn his spot in the lineup. The native of South Carolina is 83-of-84 in PATs and 57-of-64 in field goal attempts during his Hawkeye career. He is fourth in program history in field goals.

Stevens says the key for him is timing and finding the sweet spot.

Stevens was a third team All Big Ten selection as a junior. His 245 career points ranks seventh on Iowa’s all-time list.

Drake coach Eric Henderson on scheduling

Sports

July 16th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Drake basketball coach Eric Henderson says he is close to finalizing a non-conference schedule for his first season as head coach. The slate includes an appearance in the Emerald Coast Classic with a first round game against LSU.

Finding power conference schools willing to schedule home and home series is virtually impossible for a mid-major program and it does not help when you have had a string of success like the Bulldogs, who were 4-1 against power conference schools in posting a 31-4 record last season.

Henderson was a supporter of keeping a 20-game Missouri Valley Conference, even with Missouri State’s exit to Conference USA.

Southwest Valley Baseball Finishes 10-11, Promising Future Ahead

Sports

July 16th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Southwest Valley Baseball team only had two upperclassmen on this year’s roster. Neither of them were seniors. A group that featured seven players who are waiting to begin their freshmen year took the field and played to the best of their ability according to Head Coach Keegan Longabaugh.

Like Longabaugh said, it wasn’t a completely new roster this year with roughly half the starters returning. A lot of heart and consistency really boosted this Timberwolves team.

Southwest Valley scored at least ten runs in eight of their ten wins this season including 14 or more in four victories. Even when the runs weren’t on the board, the bats weren’t dead.

The Timberwolves had four everyday starters swing at least .300 throughout the season including Junior Gavin Wetzel who had the best-earned run average on the roster also. Wetzel, being one of the two seniors next year means his leadership will be pivotal.

A 10-11 season is only a glimpse of what this team is capable of in the near future. Southwest Valley will return everyone and look to get above .500 and beyond in 2026.

Driver: Iowa Speedway is a “ton of fun,” should continue as big-money boost

News, Sports

July 16th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – It’s estimated a single weekend of NASCAR racing generates 100-million dollars for central Iowa’s economy, and one of the sport’s top drivers — who’s won the checked flag twice at the Iowa Speedway — believes the top-level races will continue in Newton. Christopher Bell, who drives the number-20 car for Joe Gibbs Racing on the circuit, says he’s very much looking forward to coming back for the Iowa Corn 350 the first weekend in August.

NASCAR has owned the Newton facility for more than a decade and has sold out the 30-thousand seat stadium for next month’s weekend of contests. The 30-year-old Oklahoma native says the Iowa Speedway is an ideal short track, which Bell calls his “bread and butter.”

Bell is ranked 6th overall in the Cup Series with three wins and eight top ten finishes. He won back-to-back Xfinity races at the Iowa Speedway in 2018 and 2019, and finished fourth in last year’s first Cup Series race at the track. Bell started his racing career in micro-sprints and sprint cars, and did plenty of racing in Iowa in his early days.

The Newton track is right along Interstate 80, about 35 miles east of Des Moines. Iowa boasts having more dirt tracks per capita than any other state.
