IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior offensive linemen Gennings Dunker and Logan Jones have been named to the Big Ten Conference Preseason Honors List, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Fifteen student-athletes from all 18 conference schools were selected by a media panel.

Dunker started 11 contests as a junior and was a dominant force on the right side of Iowa’s offensive line that was recognized as a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award in 2024. The Lena, Illinois, native was a second-team all-conference honoree, as well as an academic all-district selection. Dunker helped pave the way for Iowa’s offense that rushed for more than 200 yards in seven games last season.

ATLANTA — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team received special mention on the 2024-25 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, it was announced Tuesday by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
The Hawkeyes earned the distinction after posting a 3.495 cumulative team grade point average.
On the court, Iowa earned two wins in the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament with a victory over Murray State. The Hawkeyes secured their ninth straight 20-win season, the second-longest streak in program history. In her first year at the helm, head coach Jan Jensen notched the second-most wins by a first-year head coach in program history.
“The WBCA is pleased to recognize those women’s basketball programs that have committed themselves to excellence on the court and in the classroom,” said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew.  “The 119 teams we honor this year strive to achieve all-around success and we commend their efforts. Congratulations!”
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes college women’s basketball teams across the nation in their respective divisions that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2024-25 season is the 30th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.

Iowa freshman Tate Sage on following Ben McCollum to Iowa

Sports

July 22nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa guard Tate Sage did not even need to visit the campus to know he wanted to be a Hawkeye. The native of Weatherford, Oklahoma, had committed to play at Drake but decided to follow coach Ben McCollum to Iowa City.

Sage says McCollum contacted him after taking the Iowa job.

Sage says a big part of his decision to follow McCollum to Iowa was his style of play.

Iowa State’s Milan Momcilovic on expanded role on offense

Sports

July 22nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State junior forward Milan Momcilovic wants to be more aggressive at the offensive end next season. Momcilovic connected on nearly 40 percent from three point range last season and averaged a shade over two threes per game. With Curtis Jones and Keshon Gilbert gone from last season he will need to pick up the slack.

Momcilovic wants more makes from behind the arch, even if his overall percentage drops.

Momcilovic has spent this summer working on contested shots.

Momcilovic is one of three starters returning from a team that finished 25-10 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Griswold School Board approves Concussion testing App contract

News, Sports

July 22nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Griswold, Iowa) – Members of the Griswold School Board, Monday evening, approved the purchase of an app for all students, athlete and non-athlete alike, that will help determine their cognitive ability, following a concussion. The idea came from Griswold Athletic Director Cole Cooper, who conducted a lot of research on ways to better serve the District’s kids.

(That’s Griswold Superintendent Dave Henrichs) Henrichs says Cooper found a program called SWAY that is available to students and parents on a phone app.

The Griswold School Board liked the idea so much, Henrichs said they will ask all students in seventh-through 12th grade to download the app, whether they are an athlete or not.

The app will cost the District roughly $700 plus four-dollars for every student over the 150 student athletes that wishes to use it.

No. 2 Clarksville and No. 9 Mason City Newman collide in 1A quarterfinals at state softball

Sports

July 22nd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Second-ranked Clarksville will take on ninth ranked Mason City Newman this evening in a class 1A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge. Clarksville is 28-4 and making its seventh all-time appearance. Unlike past state tournament runs, Head Coach Katie Burman says this year’s strength of schedule has the team as prepared as possible, having frequently played teams from Classes 3A and 4A along with some of the best teams in 1A and 2A.

Newman had two shutout wins on its way to the state tournament, and enters with the lowest ERA in the 1A tournament field at 0.84. Burman says confidence is key, especially with how well junior pitcher Syndey Lovrien has performed lately. She enters with a 1.58 ERA.
