Sports

August 9th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State offensive lineman Dylan Barrett has been named to the Rimington Trophy watch list. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in Division I college football.

Barrett, entering his second season as a Cyclone, started eight games at left guard and missed six games due to injury last season.

The St. Charles, Illinois native paved the way for an ISU rushing attack that scored 27 touchdowns, tied for the fourth-most in a season in school history. Iowa State also broke the program record for points in a season (435).

OWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Athletics and Hawkeye Sports Properties will host the “Hawk Talk with Kirk Ferentz Radio Show” each Wednesday evening during the 2025 Hawkeye football season. The initial show of the season will take place Wednesday, Aug. 27.

VUE Rooftop at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Iowa City will once again host the weekly radio show from 6:30-8 p.m. with Moon Family head football coach Kirk Ferentz and host Gary Dolphin, the play-by-play voice of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Ferentz and Dolphin will discuss the current season, while responding to emailed and social media questions. The show is open to all fans. Fans can submit questions by via X or Facebook using the hashtag #HawkTalk, or by commenting on the show post each week.

There will not be a show on Oct. 1 and the show on Nov. 26 will be pre-recorded due to a men’s basketball conflict.

Hawkeye Sports Properties also announced the addition of veteran sports reporter Matt Randazzo as its pregame host for 2025. Burkle on Mackey Award Watch List

Sports

August 8th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State tight end Gabe Burkle was named to the 2025 John Mackey Award watch list Friday. The award is presented annually to the best tight end in college football.

Burkle was one of six Big 12 tight ends featured on the 46-player watch list.

A Cedar Rapids, Iowa native, Burkle took on an increased role within the Cyclone offense and emerged as a viable pass-catching option later in the season. Burkle played in all 14 games, making eight starts, and hauled in 26 receptions for 296 yards.

Of his 26 receptions, 24 came in the final seven games of the season.

Burkle was part of several key plays throughout the season, but perhaps none bigger than his 26-yard reception via halfback pass on a critical third-and-1 to set up the game-winning score at Utah. He also caught his first-career touchdown in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against No. 15 Miami.

Iowa State opens the 2025 season August 23 in Dublin, Ireland against Kansas State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Season tickets are on sale, here.

2 Hawkeyes Tabbed for Watch Lists

Sports

August 8th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Logan Jones and junior Zach Ortwerth were named to the Rimington Trophy and John Mackey Award watch lists, respectively, on Friday. The Rimington Trophy is awarded annually to the nation’s top center, while the Mackey Award is presented to the country’s most outstanding tight end.

Jones (6-foot-3, 302-pounds) was also named to the Rimington preseason list the last two seasons. Former Hawkeye Tyler Linderbaum was the 2021 Rimington Trophy recipient.

Jones was previously tabbed for the Outland Trophy Watch List earlier this month, presented to the top offensive lineman in the country.

The Council Bluffs, Iowa, native started 12 games as a junior and was a first-team all-conference selection and an honorable mention All-American by Phil Steele in 2024. The native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, anchored the Hawkeye offensive line that allowed just 17 sacks and helped Iowa rush for 2,564 yards, the most since 2002. Jones was tabbed a preseason second-team All-American by Walter Camp, and a third-team All-American by Athlon and Phil Steele earlier this month.

The center with the most first team votes on three All-America teams (Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America) will determine the winner of the Rimington Trophy. The award is named after Nebraska center Dave Rimington, who is a two-time All-American, College Football Hall of Fame inductee, and the only college football player to win the Outland Trophy twice.

Ortwerth (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) played in all 13 games a season ago, while logging four starts. He had 11 catches for 133 yards with a career-high 66 yards in a 42-10 win over Wisconsin in 2024. The St. Louis native earned a Coaches Appreciate Award after his sophomore year.

Iowa has had two previous winners of the Mackey Award: Dallas Clark in 2002 and T.J. Hockenson in 2018. Tony Moeaki (2009), Allen Reisner (2010) and Noah Fant (2018) were semifinalists for the award, while Sam LaPorta was one of three finalists in 2022.

The Hawkeyes kickoff the season against UAlbany on Aug. 30, at Kinnick Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. (CT). Tickets are available for purchase for the season opener at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.

Iowa football Media Day is Friday

Sports

August 7th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

It may be running back by committee at Iowa where the Hawkeyes need to replace Kaleb Johnson, who rushed for more than 15 hundred yards and 21 touchdowns a year ago before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sophomore Kamari Moulton rushed for more than 470 yards a year ago and is expected to have a much bigger role this season.

Junior Jaziun Patterson and Terrell Washington junior are expected to contribute as well and Moulton says all three compliment each other.

Patterson says there is good chemistry in the running back room.

Washington also spent time at receiver last season and feels his versatility is a plus.

Washington says all the running backs will need to step up this season.

The Hawkeyes open the season on August 30th at home against the University of Albany.

New Iowa State receivers look to fill void

Sports

August 7th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht likes the potential of the Cyclone receivers despite some key losses last season. Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins are both with the Houston Texans after combining for 167 receptions for more than 23 hundred yards and 18 touchdowns for a team that finished 11-3.

Becht says a big plus is experience at running back and the offensive line.

One of the new receivers looking to contribute is junior Chase Sowell. He had 81 catches the last two season while playing at East Carolina.

Sowell believes the receiving corps will have depth.

The Cyclones open August 23rd in Dublin, Ireland, against Kansas State.

Northern Iowa coach accused of sexual exploitation of a minor

News, Sports

August 7th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A northern Iowa girls’ track coach has been arrested and faces felony charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and grooming.

Skyler Ahrens has been placed on administrative leave from his job at Lake Mills Community Schools. He was a gym teacher in the elementary and middle schools and the high school girls’ track coach. Ahrens was arrested last (Wednesday) night. In addition to the sexual exploitation charge, he’s also accused of disseminating obscene material by phone to a minor.

Court documents indicate Ahrens is accused of asking someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl to send him explicit photos, but he was communicating with a Winnebago County deputy who was online, posing as a teenage girl.

Lake Mills’ school officials say the alleged conduct is a violation of professional ethics and district policy and they are fully cooperating with law enforcement’s investigation.
