Atlantic is one of three cities to host public meetings across the state in the next three weeks, to gather input on proposed water quality standards designated use changes for a fourth batch of select rivers and streams. The meetings, which are hosted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), are being held to gather input on changes designed to help protect aquatic life and recreational uses. The meeting in Atlantic will take place from 3-to 6-p.m. Tue., Nov. 13^th, at the historic Rock Island Depot at 102 Chestnut Street.

The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest Saturday morning of 30-year old James Brown Lockman. The Red Oak man was wanted on a warrant out of northwest Iowa’s Ida County, for Violating the terms of his Probation. Lockman was being held over the weekend in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center, on $5,000 cash bond.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Red Oak man Saturday (11/10) morning at around 8:27am on two valid warrants.  Shane Michael Murley, 22, of Red Oak was arrested for probation violation, domestic abuse and criminal mischief 5th degree.

Murley was first taken to the Page County Corrections facility but was later transported to the Montgomery County Corrections facility and is being held on $1,050.00 cash bond.

No injuries were reported following a collision Friday afternoon between a pickup truck and a semi, in Page County. The Sheriff’s Office says at around 12:23 pm, 61-year old William Kruse, of Shenandoah, was traveling eastbound on Highway 2 approximately, four-tenths of a mile west of O Avenue. His 2012 Toyota Tundra pickup crossed the center line and side swiped a 2006 Peterbilt dump truck pulling a 2006 trailer travelling westbound at the same location.  The Peterbilt was being operated by 65-year old Terry Skalberg, of Red Oak.

Authorities say both trucks sustained disabling damage, but a dollar amount of the damage amount was not available late Friday afternoon. Charges are are currently pending.

No injuries were reported following a rollover accident this (Friday) morning, in Page County. Sheriff’s officials say 22-year old Christopher Dean Redmond, of Braddyville was traveling north on T Avenue, about one-half mile north of 250th Street, when he looked at the center console of the 2004 Buick he was driving, and lost control. The vehicle turned sideways and rolled, coming to rest on its passenger side. Damage was estimated at 10,000. The accident happened at around 7:45-a.m. No citations were issued.

Page County Sheriff Lyle Palmer says a Shenandoah couple was arrested Wednesday. 29-year old Aaron Duwayne Childs was taken into custody at around 8:30-p.m., on a Page County warrant for Domestic Abuse Assault, and Child Endangerment. Palmer says 25-year old Elizabeth Renee Peek was arrested at the same residence, on a charge of Interference with Official Acts.

Peek posted a $300 bond and was released from custody, while Childs was held in the Page County Jail without bond, pending an appearance before the magistrate.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The U.S. Agriculture Department has lowered its predictions for the drought-stunted corn crops in Iowa and Nebraska. The USDA says that, based on Nov. 1 conditions, it expects a Nebraska crop of 1.27 billion bushels. That’s down more than 2 percent from the October forecast and 17 percent below last year.  In Iowa, a corn crop of 1.90 billion bushels is expected, which is more than 1 percent less than October and down 19 percent from last year.

The Nebraska soybean crop is forecast at 203 million bushels, the same figure as October and 22 percent below 2011.  In Iowa, a soybean crop of 409 million bushels is expected, more than 2.5 percent higher than the October figure but still 14 percent under last year.

Forecasters say it’ll be one of “those” weekends in Iowa, where you may be comfy in a t-shirt and shorts one hour, and then the next, you’ll need gloves, a scarf and your winter parka. Meteorologist Kevin Skow, at the National Weather Service, says we’d better enjoy the mild weather while it lasts.  “Saturday looks to be the best of the days,” Skow says. “Temperatures rising into the upper 60s north and into the mid-70s south, but we have a cold front that’ll sweep through on Saturday night into Sunday and that’s going to really drop our temperatures off.” He says we’ll see the weather make an abrupt about-face in the next few days.

“We’re looking to see temperatures drop off into the mid-30s north to lower 60s south on Sunday,” he says. “By Monday, temperatures across the state will be in the upper 20s north to mid-30s south for highs.” Warmer weather will be very slow to rebound, Skow says, as highs may inch back into the 40s later in the week.

Republican Congressman Steve King says he hasn’t had a chance to “contemplate” a run for statewide office in the future, but he isn’t ruling out a run for the U.S. Senate in 2014. “I know that’s something that’s on the horizon, the 2014, and I think there are some things, decisions that need to be made before I could comment on that,” King says.

Senator Tom Harkin’s term ends in two years and Harkin has not yet announced whether he will seek reelection in 2014. King just won reelection to the U.S. House, but by the narrowest margin of victory in his six congressional races. King’s become nationally known for his conservative views and for what King describes as candor, but what his 2012 opponent Christie Vilsack referred to as “embarrassing” comments. King rejects the idea that he is too conservative to win a statewide race.

“I think I have a consistent record. I think people know me. I have represented all of the western third of Iowa and this new district goes east to Chickasaw County, wraps around — in a way — the Des Moines market which we have been in, too,” King says. “…It looks to me like Iowans are common sense people. We do stand a lot on the same page and I don’t know why that would be an impediment at all.”

According to King, politicians like himself “should never apologize for the things that we believe in” and he promises to “actively and aggressively” try to promote conservative values.
