DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Six people from Iowa and one from Nebraska will serve shorter prison sentences after President Barack Obama granted them clemency. Most of the 72 offenders in Friday’s announcement committed drug crimes considered nonviolent.

Justin Border, of Davenport, will serve 14 of 20 years and ZoAnn Brown, of Rowan, will have served about 11 of her 24-year sentence when she’s released in 2018. Martin Godbersen, of Sioux City, will serve about 12 years of his nearly 19-year sentence. Mandy Martinson, of Mason City, had about four years knocked off her 15-year sentence. Michael Lee Roth, of Primghar, and Juan Carlos Munoz, of South Sioux City, Nebraska, will each serve 15 of their 20-year sentences.

Obama has granted 944 people clemency, more than the previous 11 presidents combined.

Police in Atlantic have arrested a woman on drug and other charges. 35-year old Sharlene Killion, of Atlantic, was arrested Wednesday for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and on a Cass County warrant for Assault. Killion was being held in the Cass County Jail.

On Thursday, Atlantic Police arrested 18-year old Dustin Jones, of Atlantic, for Theft in the 5th Degree (Shoplifting). And, 31-year old Greg Richter, of Atlantic, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault causing injury, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. Both men were booked into the Cass County Jail.

HOLSTEIN, Iowa (AP) – The tiny western Iowa city of Holstein celebrates the reopening of its 89-year-old Historic State Theater after the community raised $200,000 and restored the dilapidated theater.  The Sioux City Journal reports that the theater is scheduled to open Friday night. The theater, which closed in 2013, has a new $27,000 roof, 150 new theater seats, a new $6,000 screen and a $60,000 digital projector.

The Save the State Theater campaign started in June 2015 and saw widespread support in Holstein, including $1,200 raised from a can recycling drive.

(A-P, Des Moines) A judge has set the bond at $10 million for a man charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of two Iowa police officers . Judge William Price set the bond for 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene during Greene’s first court appearance today (Friday).

Green was apprehended Wednesday, hours after 38-year old  Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio and 24-year old Urbandale officer Justin Martin were killed. Both officers were shot in ambush-style attacks while sitting in their cars in separate locations.

If convicted, Green would receive an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole. His next hearing is set for Nov. 14th. Greene appeared in pink jail inmate clothing at the hearing, staring straight ahead without saying anything. The hearing took less than a minute in the Polk County Jail, which has a small courtroom.

Prior to the shootings, Greene was facing intense money problems, had been found by a judge to hit and financially exploit his mother, and was ordered to move out of her basement hours before the shootings. He was arrested Thursday afternoon after detectives questioned him at the Des Moines police station. Greene was secured with the handcuffs that had belonged to the patrolmen who were killed in ambush-style attacks, and was later booked into the county jail.

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff from sunrise on Monday, Nov. 7 to sunset on Tuesday, Nov. 8 to honor Des Moines Police Sgt. Tony Beminio and Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin, who were both killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of Nov. 2. Sgt. Beminio will be laid to rest on Monday, Nov. 7 and Officer Martin, Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The governor’s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. Flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol building and on flag displays in the Capitol complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.

Police in Creston report the arrest Thursday afternoon, of 30-year old Ryan Michael Weis. The Creston man was taken into custody at his home at around 12:45-p.m., for OWI/1st offense. He was being held in the Union County Jail on $1,000 bond.

Funeral services have been scheduled for both Iowa police officers who were fatally shot in an ambush-style attack early Wednesday morning while they sat in their police vehicles. Des Moines police officials say a visitation for 38-year old Sgt. Anthony Beminio will be held Sunday afternoon in West Des Moines. His funeral is set for Monday morning.

Beminio was killed about 20 minutes after 24-year-old Urbandale Officer Justin Martin was fatally shot less than 2 miles away.  Martin’s funeral is scheduled for 11:40-a.m. Tuesday at the South Calhoun Middle School, in his hometown of Rockwell City. He will be buried at Rosehill Cemetery, a spot on the edge of the community surrounded by farmland.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Get ready for the annual fall ritual of turning back your clocks by one hour, and relish that extra hour of sleep this weekend. Daylight saving time is ending and it’s back to standard time for most people in the United States. The change comes at 2 a.m. local time Sunday, and the shift moves one hour of daylight to the morning from the evening.

Residents of Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories don’t need to fiddle with their clocks because those places don’t observe daylight saving time. Daylight saving time returns at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 12.

Remember, when we switch to Standard Time, “Fall back” one hour.
