Gavin SmithThe Audubon Wheelers moved to 3-0 with a well-rounded 63-20 win over Fremont-Mills on Friday night. The Wheelers got contributions from each facet of the game and gave the Homecoming crowd plenty to cheer about. Gavin Smith led the charge with 185 yards and 5 scores on the ground, plus another through the air. Smith felt it was a strong team effort and the team adapted well to what the Knights threw at them.

Audubon struck first with a 51 yard touchdown pass from Smith to Matthew Beisswenger on their second offensive possession. Gavin would add another touchdown early in the second quarter with a 42 yard rushing score. Fremont-Mills answered the next possession with a 32 yard TD pass from Jake Malcom to Taylor Reed to make it 14-6. The Knights were called for an illegal procedure on the ensuing kickoff and had to kick from further back. That mistake bit the Knights as Matthew Beisswenger took that kick 75 yards for a touchdown to put the Wheelers up 21-6. A Carter Andreasen interception on the next Knights possession set the Wheelers up with a short field and they got another touchdown run from Smith. The Knights hit a couple of big pass plays to get a score in before half to make it 28-12 at the break.

Audubon then came out and set the tone with two long scoring drives in the third quarter. Their first possession went 8 plays in about 4 minutes, and was capped by a 2 yard Smith rushing score. They were able to force a turnover on downs to get the ball back on their own 8 yard line. The Wheelers then went 72 yards in 9 plays to score again with a run by Andreasen to grab full control of the game at 42-12. The Wheelers added three more scores while the Knights scored once more to come to the 63-20 final. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks was proud of the way his team came out and performed.

The Wheelers move to 3-0 on the season and will open up district play next week at Exira-EHK. Fremont-Mills falls to 1-2 on the season, with two losses to top 5 teams. The Knights will host Bedford next week.
