Iowa stumbles in opening round of Big Ten Tournament

Sports

May 27th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s NCAA Tournament hopes were dealt a damaging blow in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes managed only two hits and struck out 15 times in a 5-2 loss to Penn State. The Hawks need a win in the losers bracket Friday morning to stay alive.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller. The Hawkeyes season may be on the line as well.

Heller expects the Hawkeyes to bounce back with a solid effort.

The Hawkeyes take on Purdue this (Friday) morning. The Boilermakers lost to second seeded Rutgers 10-3.

Former Iowa star bouncing back from injury in Denver

May 27th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa star Josey Jewell is not used to coming back from injury. The Denver Bronco linebacker missed nearly all of last season with a torn pectoral muscle. Despite the injury and a change in the coaching staff the Broncos signed Jewell to a two-year, 11 million dollar contract.

It was the first time Jewell had gone through the free agent process.

Jewell says missing nearly an entire season gave him a new perspective.

Iowa/Penn State set for this morning at B1G baseball tournament

Sports

May 26th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The rain delayed Big Ten baseball tournament begins this (Thursday) morning in Omaha as third seeded Iowa plays Penn State. The condensed format means more stress on the pitching staff. The strategy according to Iowa coach Rick Heller does not change.

Heller says the rotation early will be the same as a conference series.

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Iowa baseball team will face sixth-seeded Penn State in the opening game of the 2022 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.  The game will be televised on BTN.

The Tournament was washed out by rain on Wednesday and has now been condensed down and will have a rolling schedule. Approximately 40 minutes in between games will be in place. Some adjustments are set into the bracket as well to make sure teams don’t play the first and last games of the day and there are a few different scenarios for the championship day schedule depending on records at that point.
