The Milwaukee Brewers earned a series split with the St. Louis Cardinals by picking up an 8-0 win on Sunday at Busch Stadium. A day after falling 8-3 the Brewers turned the tables to split the four game set.

Omar Narvaez and Lorenzo Cain had three hits apiece. Narvaez scored 3 times and drove in a run. Cain scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. Jace Peterson also drove in 3 runs.

The Cardinals fell to 26-21 for the season. The redbirds will now welcome in the San Diego Padres for three games to start the new week. The Memorial Day game will have a 12:20 p.m. pregame start time on KJAN with first pitch at 1:15 p.m.

Fullard, Huckstorf named to Big Ten All-Tournament Team

Sports

May 29th, 2022 by admin

Two University of Iowa baseball student-athletes – redshirt senior Izaya Fullard and redshirt sophomore Kyle Huckstorf – were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team, it was announced Sunday by the league office.

Fullard hit .316 (6-of-19) in five games with one double, two RBIs and two runs scored.  The North Liberty, Iowa, native had the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning in Iowa’s 5-4 victory over Purdue in Friday’s elimination game.  The second baseman had two multi-hit games in the tournament.

Huckstorf finished with a team-high .400 (6-of-15) batting average with three extra-base hits (double, triple and home run).  The outfielder drove in a team-high six runs and four score times.  The Wisconsin native was 2-for-3 with a double and solo home run against Penn State before going 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs in the semifinal win over Michigan.

After losing its tournament opener, Iowa won three straight elimination games at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.  The Hawkeyes became the first team in tournament history to win two games on the same day when they defeated Penn State and Michigan on May 28.

Michigan ends Iowa’s run at the Big Ten Tournament

Sports

May 29th, 2022 by admin

OMAHA, Neb. – Michigan jumped out to a 4-0 lead and put up a nine spot late to down the University of Iowa baseball team, 13-1 in seven innings, on Sunday in an elimination game at the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

Iowa had a strong week in Omaha, winning three games and becoming the first team to win two games on the same day during the tournament.  The Hawkeyes are 36-19 overall.

Michigan took advantage of two free bases against Iowa starter Brody Brecht in the first inning, which led to two runs scoring.  After Brecht gave up an RBI single to Jimmy Obertrop, Iowa went to Dylan Nedved in relief.  The redshirt senior struck out two of the three batters he faced, but Michigan’s Riley Bertram’s RBI single through the right side made the score 2-0.

Michigan used a single, hit by pitch and Hawkeye fielding error to load the bases in the fourth before back-to-back sacrifice flies pushed the lead to 4-0.

Iowa scored its lone run in the bottom half when Izaya Fullard walked and scored on Kyle Huckstorf’s RBI single.

Michigan put an end to the game in the seventh, scoring nine runs on three hits, while sending 13 batters to the plate.  Tito Flores had a two-run double, Ted Burton had a three-run double and Clark Elliott and a three-run triple in the inning.

Brecht (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in 1/3 of an inning.  Iowa used seven pitchers in the game and the staff issued nine free bases.
