 AND SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA.

  A FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES INTO THIS EVENING FOR SOUTHEAST
 NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST IOWA.
 
 WITH INCREASING SUNSHINE THIS AFTERNOON…INSTABILITY WILL
 CONTINUE TO INCREASE ACROSS THE AREA. A PIECE OF UPPER LEVEL
 ENERGY WILL MOVE NORTHEAST ACROSS THE AREA LATER THIS AFTERNOON
 AND PROVIDE THE DYNAMICS NEEDED TO PRODUCE THUNDERSTORMS…A FEW
 OF WHICH COULD BE SEVERE.

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH ADDITIONAL RAIN FALLING ON ALREADY SATURATED GROUND WILL RESULT IN POTENTIAL FLASH FLOODING.  

* SEVERAL RIVERS AND STREAMS ACROSS SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST IOWA ARE ALREADY ABOVE OR NEAR FLOOD STAGE AND ANY ADDITIONAL RAINFALL WILL COMPOUND FLOODING PROBLEMS. 
 
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
 
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

Strong Storms & Heavy Rain possible…again

An upper level low pressure system will push a fairly strong disturbance across Iowa today. This will lead to periods of strong to severe storms across the state…especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Some storms will also produce heavy rain which may lead to additional flooding. Monitor forecasts for the latest updates on this storm system. (NWS/Des Moines)

Today: Showers and thunderstorms. High near 73. Breezy, with a south wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. South wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Southwest wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

…MORE HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED LATER TODAY AND THIS EVENING..ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT CENTRAL IOWA AGAIN TODAY AND PERSIST THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. HEAVIER RAIN IS POSSIBLE LATER THIS MORNING AND THROUGH THE AFTERNOON HOURS. ANY ADDITIONAL RAINFALL OVER ALREADY SATURATED AREAS WILL LEAD TO MORE FLASH FLOODING THROUGHOUT CENTRAL IOWA.

CURRENT CONDITIONS INCLUDE EXTREMELY SATURATED SOILS…SIGNIFICANT PONDING OF WATER IN FIELDS AND STREAMS RUNNING AT BANKFULL OR ARE CURRENTLY IN FLOOD. ADDITIONALLY…THUNDERSTORMS LATER TODAY MAY PRODUCE ONE TO THREE INCHES OF RAIN OVER THE AREA THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING.

Storms bring heavy rain to parts of western/sw Iowa Wednesday

Storms that passed through eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa brought heavy rain Wednesday, but there was little in the line of severe weather through late Wednesday night. The exception, according to National Weather Service, was thunderstorm winds that blew through the Monona County community of Onawa at around 8:10-p.m. Wednesday, causing part of roof to be blown off a business. The roof fell onto some vehicles.

Flash flooding occurred in Fremont and Montgomery Counties Wednesday afternoon. In Fremont County, a flash flood over Manti Road in Farragut only lasted about 15 minutes at around 2-p.m.

In Red Oak, street flooding was reported just after 3-p.m, with water running two- to three-feet deep in some places. Heavy rain was also reported at around 7:45-p.m. two-miles northwest of Little Sioux, in Harrison County, where nearly an inch fell in less than 80-minutes.

Flash Flood warnings were issued for also issued for Cass and Audubon Counties early Wednesday afternoon, but there were no reports of flooding received by the Weather Service.

A Flood Warning remains in effect until Saturday afternoon for the East Nishnabotna River at Red Oak, and until Sunday evening, for the Nishnabotna River near Hamburg. And, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday evening for the much of Iowa, including the entire KJAN listening area.
